The global demand for oil and natural gas has increased, and resource development is moving to the deep sea. Floating and flexible offshore structures such as semi-submersible, spar, and FPSO structures have been widely used. The major equipment of floating structures is always exposed to waves, currents, and other marine environmental factors, which cause structural damage. Moreover, flexible risers are susceptible to an exciting force due to the motion of the floating body. The inline and transverse responses from the three-dimensional behavior of a floating structure occur because of various forces. Typical risers are made of steel pipe and applied in the oil and gas development field, but flexible materials such as polyethylene are suitable for OTEC risers. Consequently, the optimal design of a flexible offshore plant requires a dynamic behavior analysis of slender bodies made of the different materials commonly used for offshore flexible risers. In this study, a three-dimensional motion measurement device was used to analyze the displacements of riser models induced by external force factors, and forced oscillation of a riser was linked to forced oscillation under a steady flow and regular wave condition.
This paper presents an underwater acoustic communication with nonlinear chirp modulation. The information is carried by the carrier amplitude, frequency or phase in the most common underwater acoustic communications. However, the proposed method includes the information within frequency variation of carrier wave for a symbol. Especially, as carrier wave the hyperbolic frequency modulated signal, one of the nonlinear chirp signal, is used and it is robust in the Doppler channel. The proposed method was analyzed and compared to conventional method by simulation. When the doppler shift existed, the error probability of the proposed method is reduced by 5~12 % than conventional method with linear frequency modulated signal. Sea trial was performed to analyze the performance of the proposed method.

FPSO and shuttle tanker are connected to each other by a mooring hawser and a loading hose through which cargo oil is off-loaded. Even in mild sea-state. environmental loads can cause unstable large drift motions between two vessels in tandem off-loading operations, which may result in collision incidents. Accordingly. the analysis on the relative motion between two vessels due to the environmental loads should be investigated in initial design stage. In this study, the low speed maneuvering equation is employed to simulate nonlinear motions of FPSO and shuttle tanker. Low frequency wave drift forces including hydrodynamic interactions between two vessels are evaluated by near field approaches. Current loads are determined by mathematical model of MMG and wind loads are calculated by employing the wind spectrum according to the guidelines of API-RP2A. Mooring forces produced by turret mooring lines and a flexible hawser are modeled quasi-statically by catenary equations. The effect of environmental loads that affect nonlinear motion is investigated through variation in their magnitudes and the nonlinear motions between FPSO and shuttle tanker are simulated under wave, current and wind in time domain.

A moored body in the sea is subjected to second-order wave forces as well as to linear oscillatory ones. The second-order farces contain slowly-varying components, of which the characteristic frequency can be as low as the natural frequency of horizontal motions of the moored body. As a consequence, the slowly-varying force can excite unexpectedly large horizontal excursion of the body, which may cause a serious damage on the mooring system. In design analysis of Turret-type mooring system which is one of the interesting mooring systems for a floating body. the slowly-varying drift forces and the transient motion of the system during weathervaning are very important. In this paper the slowly-varying drift forces were calculated by using the Quadratic Transfer Function with considering the second order free-wave contributions. Additionaly the transient surge motion of the moored body was simulated with including the roll of the time-memory effect. In this simulation the spring constant of the spread Turret mooring system is updated at every time step for considering the nonlinear effect.
In this paper, we develop a real time monitoring system to detect third-party damage on natural gas pipeline. When the damage due to third-party incidents causes an immediate rupture, the developed on-line monitoring system can help reducing the sequences of event at once. Moreover, since many third-party incidents cause damage that does not lead to immediate rupture but can grow with time, the developed on-line monitoring system can execute a significant role in reducing many third-party damage incidents. Also, when the damage is given at a point on natural gas pipeline, the acoustic wave is propagated very fast about 421.3 m/s. Therefore, the data processing time should be very short in order to detect precisely the impact position. Generally, the pipeline is laid under ground or sea and the length is very long. So a wireless data communication method is recommendable and the sensing positions are limited by laid circumstance and setting cost of sensors. The calculation and monitoring software is developed by an algorithm using the propagation speed of acoustic wave and data base system based on wireless communication and DSP systems. The developed monitoring system is examined by field testing at Balan pilot plant, KOGAS being done in order to demonstrate its validity through reactive detection of third-party contact with pipelines. Furthermore, the development system was set at the practical pipelines such as an offshore pipeline between two islands Yul-Do and Youngjong-Do, and a land branch of Pyoungtaek, Korea and it has been operating in real time.
Recently, many tsunamis triggered by impulsive undersea ground motions occurred in subduction zones around the Pacific Ocean area including the East Sea surrounded by Korea, Japan and Russia. The wave height of a tsunami may be in the order of several meters, while the wavelength can be up to 1,000 km in the ocean, where the average water depth is about 4 km. A tsunami could cause a severe coastal flooding and property damage not only at neighboring countries but also at distant countries. A fundamental and economic way to mitigate unusual tsunami attacks is to construct tsunami hazard maps along coastal areas vulnerable to tsunami flooding. These maps should be developed based on the historical tsunami events and projected scenarios. The map could be used to make evacuation plans in the event of a real tsunami assault.
Medium-range forecast is highly dependent on ensemble forecast data. However, operational weather forecasters have not enough time to digest all of detailed features revealed in ensemble forecast data. To utilize the ensemble data effectively in medium-range forecasting, representative weather patterns in East Asia in this study are defined. The k-means clustering analysis is applied for the objectivity of weather patterns. Input data used daily Mean Sea Level Pressure (MSLP) anomaly of the ECMWF ReAnalysis-Interim (ERA-Interim) during 1981~2010 (30 years) provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Using the Explained Variance (EV), the optimal study area is defined by 20~60°N, 100~150°E. The number of clusters defined by Explained Cluster Variance (ECV) is thirty (k = 30). 30 representative weather patterns with their frequencies are summarized. Weather pattern #1 occurred all seasons, but it was about 56% in summer (June~September). The relatively rare occurrence of weather pattern (#30) occurred mainly in winter. Additionally, we investigate the relationship between weather patterns and extreme weather events such as heat wave, cold wave, and heavy rainfall as well as snowfall. The weather patterns associated with heavy rainfall exceeding 110 mm day-1 were #1, #4, and #9 with days (%) of more than 10%. Heavy snowfall events exceeding 24 cm day-1 mainly occurred in weather pattern #28 (4%) and #29 (6%). High and low temperature events (> 34℃ and < -14℃) were associated with weather pattern #1~4 (14~18%) and #28~29 (27~29%), respectively. These results suggest that the classification of various weather patterns will be used as a reference for grouping all ensemble forecast data, which will be useful for the scenario-based medium-range ensemble forecast in the future.

Diode rectifiers have been widely used for an AC to DC converter. But a big problem is that they include large harmonics components in the input currents. A 12-pulse configuration with phase shifting transformer is useful for reducing them. however, it still includes the ($12{\pm}1$)th (m; integer) harmonics in the input currents. In this paper, we propose a single-phase square wave auxiliary voltage supply which is inserted in the middle DC bus. It reduces harmonics especially the 11th and 13th and the harmonic characteristic becomes almost equivalent to a 24-pulse rectifier. Theoretical analysis of the combined 12-pulse diode rectifier with the auxiliary supply is presented and a control method of the auxiliary supply is proposed. The reduction in the input current harmonics is verified by simulation using software PSIM.
Dynamic response analysis of offshore triceratops with stiffened buoyant legs under impact and non-impact waves is presented. Triceratops is relatively new-generation complaint platform being explored in the recent past for its suitability in ultra-deep waters. Buoyant legs support the deck through ball joints, which partially isolate the deck by not transferring rotation from legs to the deck. Buoyant legs are interconnected using equally spaced stiffeners, inducing more integral action in dispersing the encountered wave loads. Two typical nonlinear waves under very high sea state are used to simulate impact and non-impact waves. Parameters of JONSWAP spectrum are chosen to produce waves with high vertical and horizontal asymmetries. Impact waves are simulated by steep, front asymmetric waves while non-impact waves are simulated using Stokes nonlinear irregular waves. Based on the numerical analyses presented, it is seen that the platform experiences both steady state (springing) and transient response (ringing) of high amplitudes. Response of the deck shows significant reduction in rotational degrees-of-freedom due to isolation offered by ball joints. Weak-asymmetric waves, resulting in non-impact waves cause steady state response. Beat phenomenon is noticed in almost all degrees-of-freedom but values in sway, roll and yaw are considerably low as angle of incidence is zero degrees. Impact waves cause response in higher frequencies; bursting nature of pitch response is a clear manifestation of the effect of impact waves on buoyant legs. Non-impact waves cause response similar to that of a beating phenomenon in all active degrees-of-freedom, which otherwise would not be present under normal loading. Power spectral density plots show energy content of response for a wide bandwidth of frequencies, indicating an alarming behaviour apart from being highly nonlinear. Heave, being one of the stiff degrees-of-freedom is triggered under non-impact waves, which resulted in tether tension variation under non-impact waves as well. Reduced deck response aids functional requirements of triceratops even under impact and non-impact waves. Stiffened group of buoyant legs enable a monolithic behaviour, enhancing stiffness in vertical plane.
We present an overview on the observation and research for the China seas using both field experiments and multi-sensor satellite data at ORSI/OUC, covering two topics: (1) Spatial and temporal distribution of internal waves in the China Seas and retrieval of internal wave parameters; (2) Retrieval, validation, and cross-comparison of multi-sensor ocean color data as well as ocean optics in situ experiments in the East China Sea. We also present an incoherent Doppler wind lidar, developed by ORSI, and its observation for marine-atmospheric boundary layer.
