The mooring lines of a floating type offshore plant are known to show wide banded and bimodal responses. These phenomena come from a combination of low and high frequency random load components, which are derived from the drift-restoring motion characteristic and wind- sea, respectively. In this study, fatigue models were applied to predict the fatigue damage of mooring lines under those loads, and the result were compared. For this purpose, seven different fatigue damage prediction models were reviewed, including mathematical formula. A FPSO (floating, production, storage, and offloading) with a $4{\times}4$ spread catenary mooring system was selected as a numerical model, which was already installed at an offshore area of West Africa. Four load cases with different combinations of wave and wind spectra were considered, and the fatigue damage to each mooring line was estimated. The rain flow fatigue damage for the time process of the mooring tension response was compared with the results estimated by all the fatigue damage prediction models. The results showed that both Benasciutti-Tovo and JB models could most accurately predict wide banded bimodal fatigue damage to a mooring system.

The Taeanhaean National Park is located on the middle of the west coast of Korean peninsula. Due to the relatively high wave energy, large tidal range which is about 7m, and extremely complex coastal line, various coastal land-forms such as mud-flats, sand beaches, sand dunes, sea cliffs etc. are well distributed in this area, and thus various coastal ecosystems are well preserved. However, because of reckless sand diggings and construction of artificial structures in the coastal zone, the natural flowing and exchange of coastal deposits were disturbed and the erosion in the beach and the dune has been seriously accelerated. To understand of the causes of these problems, we tried three times periodical measuring with VRS/RTK GPS instrument at the Hakampo and Anmyeon beach. According to seasonal changes of the coast-line, beach area and cross-section of study sites, generally erosion process was dominated in the summer and deposition process was followed after summer.

Inlet hammershock is the critical loads condition for designing the inlet duct structure of a fighter. The sudden flow reduction in engine compressor causes inlet hammershock with high pressure. The traditional method was used to combine extreme conditions (maximum speed, sea level altitude, and cold day) to analyze this compression wave inlet hammershock pressure. However, after the 90s there have been papers that presented the probabilistic approach for the inlet hammershock to achieve the appropriate design pressure. This study shows how to analyze the inlet hammershock pressure by making practical use of the Republic of Korea Air Force real flight usage data under probabilistic approach and then analyze approximately 30% decreased inlet hammershock pressure compared with the traditional valve.
Research and development works on practical application of natural energy utilization systems involving solar, wind and sea wave energies are under promoting for the purpose of improving the energy consumption structure. These natural energies, made available with the use of relatively simple apparatus, are clean economically efficient and highly effective in the conservation of environment. However, these natural energies also have low energy density, randomness and regional variations. To compensate for these characteristics, hybrid utilization of solar and wind energies is currently under study. The introduction of a plural number of the natural energy hybrid utilization systems into a specific area will affect the economic efficiency, reliability and environmental conservation. Evaluation method of such effects has been examined in this study. The present method consisted of the steps described below. First, available energy was calculated from insolation distribution and wind velocity distribution in the specified area, and then the effect on the configuration of the power system load was obtained. This was followed by the determination of the optimal power dispatch over the specified period and by evaluations in light of economic efficiency, reliability and environmental indices.
A submerged floating railway is an innovative tunnel infrastructure passing through the deep sea independent of wave and wind so that high speed trains can run on it. It doesn't depend on water depth and is cost effective due to modular construction on land. The construction period can be reduced drastically. This paper introduces the concept design of a submerged floating railway, and for securing safety, proposes a method to analyze the structural behavior of the body in case of collision with a submarine. The theory of a beam with an elastic foundation was used to calculate the equivalent mass of the body so that the perfect elastic collision could be applied to calculate the collision velocity. The maximum deformation and bending moment was analyzed based on energy conservation. To verify the results, a collision analysis using a finite element analysis code was made. Comparing the results confirmed that this simplified collision analysis method gives enough accurate deformation and bending moment to be used for actual estimation in the initial design stage.
The IMO has adopted emission standards that strictly restrict the use of bunker C oil for vessels. Accordingly, research and bunkering pilot projects for LNG fueled ships are being actively carried out, which is expected to substantially reduce environmental pollution. In this study, we have adopted the turret moored Floating LNG Bunkering Terminal (FLBT) designed to receive the LNG from LNGCs and to transfer LNG to LNG bunkering shuttles in ship to ship moored condition. Numerical simulations have been performed with a 1-year return period of wind, wave, and current. Damping values of numerical model were adjusted from the results of model tests to obtain accurate simulation results. The results confirm safe berthing operation during the 1-year return period of environmental condition. Safety depends on the direction of environment, with increasingly stable operation facilitated by the application of heading-control function of FLBT to avoid beam-sea conditions.

Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) is being developed to do maritime survey and maritime surveillance at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean engineering (KRISO). The goal is that USV should be operated at the maximum speed of 45 knots and it should be operated at sea state 4. Therefore the planing hull of USV should be excellent in resistance performance and manoeuvring performance. It is needed to check its performance using Experimental Fluid Dynamics (EFD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or analytic method before designing the hull. In this study, resistance performance was analyzed by EFD and CFD. EFD with heave and pitch was performed at high speed towing system in Seoul National University. CFD was performed using SNUFOAM based on openFOAM with dynamic mesh to calculate running attitudes. The results of CFD were compared with EFD results. The results of CFD were resistance, running attitudes and wave height. The flow distribution and pressure distribution were also analyzed. The results of numerical resistance was under estimated than EFD. Even though the results of CFD have a slight limitation, it can be successfully used to estimate the resistance performance of planing hull. In addition it can be used as a supplement for EFD results.

In this study, a motion control problem for the vessels towed by tugboats or towing ships on the sea is considered. The towed vessel looks like the barge ship, which is used for many purposes. In these vessels, basically, the power propulsion system is not installed but just towed by a towing vessel such as tugboats with ropes and wires. It means that the motions of towed vessel are basically dependent on the tracking route of towing boat. Therefore, in some cases, undesirable and unpredictable motions may be made by environmental factors such as wave, wind attack and so on. As a result, a collision accident with others may occur during maneuvering situation. Based on these facts, the authors try to encourage the steering performance of the towed vessel by using controllable rudders without any propulsion system. In this study, especially, a controllable vessel with three rudders is considered, and a mathematical model is induced for the future study. The model is described as surge, sway motion and inertia moment by following the general representation method for the surface ship.

Optimal route planning is the route planning to minimize voyage time or fuel consumption in a given ocean environment. Unlike the previous studies on weather routing, this study proposes an optimization method for the route planning to avoid the grounding risk in the coast. The route way-points were searched using Dijkstra algorithm, and then the optimization was performed to minimize fuel consumption by setting the optimization design parameter to the engine rpm. To set the engine rpm, a method to use the fixed rpm from the departure point to the destination point, and a method to use the rpm for each section by dividing the route were used. The ocean environmental factors considered for route planning were wind, wave, and current, and the depth information was utilized to compute grounding risk. The proposed method was applied to the ship passing between Mokpo and Jeju, and then it was confirmed that fuel consumption was reduced by comparing the optimum route and the past navigated route.
The global weather prediction model, Korean Integrated Model (KIM), has been in operation since April 2020 by the Korea Meteorological Administration. This study assessed the performance of heat waves (HWs) in Korea in 2020. Case experiments during 2018-2020 were conducted to support the reliability of assessment, and the factors which affect predictability of the HWs were analyzed. Simulated expansion and retreat of the Tibetan High and North Pacific High during the 2020 HW had a good agreement with the analysis. However, the model showed significant cold biases in the maximum surface temperature. It was found that the temperature bias was highly related to underestimation of downward shortwave radiation at surface, which was linked to cloudiness. KIM tended to overestimate nighttime clouds that delayed the dissipation of cloud in the morning, which affected the shortage of downward solar radiation. The vertical profiles of temperature and moisture showed that cold bias and trapped moisture in the lower atmosphere produce favorable conditions for cloud formation over the Yellow Sea, which affected overestimation of cloud in downwind land. Sensitivity test was performed to reduce model bias, which was done by modulating moisture mixing parameter in the boundary layer scheme. Results indicated that the daytime temperature errors were reduced by increase in surface solar irradiance with enhanced cloud dissipation. This study suggested that not only the synoptic features but also the accuracy of low-level temperature and moisture condition played an important role in predicting the maximum temperature during the HWs in medium-range forecasts.
