In present, the terminal area of the Nagdong River Delta consists of micro-depositional landforms with sand barrier islands, sand bars and tidal flats which are arranged parallel to the present shoreline, and have rapidly shifted toward sea during last 100 years due to human activities such as construction of estuary dam, industrial complex and residential area. To clarify the landform changes of the area, the author traced the morphologic change pattern based on interpretation of air-photos, topographic maps and old Korean traditional map, and the results are as follows ; Based on the Daedongyeojido, one of the old Korean map, published in 1861, the area including upper part of the delta was underlying by sea level except two larger sand barriers, which means the Nagdong River Delta was not completely formed as the present outline of morphology by 1860s. According to the topographic map(1 :50,000) of 1916, the delta resembled to the present morphology pattern was exposed in 1916, and at this time the area was mainly composed of one sand barrier island, four sand bars and tidal flats, which had slowly elongated southwards before construction of the Nagdong River Estuary Dam in 1987. But after 1987, the area has been rapidly and drastically shifted southwards in arrange with one chain of sand barrier islands (Elsugdo -Myeonghodo-Sinhodo ) and four chains of sand bars (first chain ; Jinwoodo -Daemadeung-Maenggeummeorideung, second chain : Jangjado-Baeghabdeung, third chain ; Saedeung-Namusitdeung, fourth : Doyodeung-Dadaedeung) parallel to shoreline. This rapid landform change of the area is now occurring, and is seemed to ascribed firstly, to the construction of the Nagdong River Estuary Dam on Elsugdo in 1987, the Sinho Industrial Complex on Sinhodo and Myeongji Residential Area on Myeonghodo in 1992, secondly, to artificial alteration of drainage channel and consequential breakdown of former energy system between riverflow and tidal-and wave-energy. From these facts, it is inferred that the landform change pattern of the area will continue until a new equilibrium between the factor available to this energy system is accomplished.

Due to climate change, there is an increasing risk of complex (hybrid) disasters, comprising rising sea-levels, typhoons, and torrential rains. This study focuses on Marine City, Busan, a new residential city built on a former landfill site in Suyeong Bay, which recently suffered massive flood damage following a combination of typhoons, storm surges, and wave overtopping and run-up. Preparations for similar complex disasters in future will depend on risk impact assessment and prioritization to establish appropriate countermeasures. A framework was first developed for this study, followed by the collection of data on flood prediction and socioeconomic risk factors. Five socioeconomic risk factors were identified: (1) population density, (2) basement accommodation, (3) building density and design, (4) design of sidewalks, and (5) design of roads. For each factor, absolute criteria were determined with which to assess their level of risk, while expert surveys were consulted to weight each factor. The results were classified into four levels and the risk level was calculated according to the sea-level rise predictions for the year 2100 and a 100-year return period for storm surge and rainfall: Attention 43 %, Caution 24 %, Alert 21 %, and Danger 11 %. Finally, each level, indicated by a different color, was depicted on a complex disaster risk map.

The sound speed of seawater can be calculated by the empirical formula as a function of temperature, salinity and pressure. It is little affected by salinity because the average salinity is 34 psu and varies within a few psu seasonally and spatially in the ocean. Recently, low-salinity water of 24 psu flows into the western sea area of Jeju Island due to the flood of the Yangtze River in China during summer, affecting sound speed profile. In this paper, it was analyzed how environmental changes affected to the underwater communication - the sound speed of low-salinity water was calculated, and the communication channel was estimated by the simulated acoustic rays while the transmitting and receiving depth and the range were varied with and without the low-salinity layer. And The BER (Bit error rate) was calculated by BPSK(Binary phase shift key) modulation and the effects of the low-salinity water on the BER was investigated. The sound speed profile was changed to have positive slope by the low-salinity layer at the sub-surface up to 20 m of depth, forming acoustic wave propagation channel at the sub-surface resulting in the decrease of most of the BER Consequently, this paper suggests that it is important to consider changes of the ocean environment for correctly analyzing the underwater communication and the detection capability.

The Manseongri Coast meets the sea on the southeast and is composed of coarse sediment as a mesotidal beach. The waves that strike the beach are stronger than the tides or tidal currents as external forces of beach deformation. Storm waves frequently reach significant wave heights of 2-3m and hit in spring and summer, leaving the sea calm during fall and winter. Incident waves reach remarkable heights that correspond with observed shoreline changes. The shoreline erodes in spring and summer due to these strong waves but recovers in fall and winter as a result of the more moderate waves. On the basis of these observed results, a numerical calibration for experiments on shoreline change was established. Results revealed that according to hindcast data, calculated shoreline changes agreed with the observed shoreline, with a minimum RMS error of 1.26m with calibration parameters $C_1=0.2$ and $C_2=1C_1$. Using these calibration parameters, long-term shoreline change was predicted after the construction of submerged breakwaters and jetties, etc. The numerical model showed that the shoreline would move forward by 5-15m behind the submerged breakwaters and recede by 5-15m north of the structure.

Detection and localization of a quiet target in shallow water environments is a challenging problem because of the complicated acoustic Propagation and the Prevalence of loud surface ship interference. Matched Field Processing (MFP) can help address the concern by using a Propagation model to determine the steering vectors, thus Providing optimal away gain and localization accuracy. However, Performance of MFP have yet realized in practice, for several reasons. The most important limitation is that precise information on the underwater environments is generally not available. To examine the Performance of MFP in the East Sea of Korea, we have accomplished a series of matched acoustic Properties and localization experiment (MAPLE). We analyzed the array data measured from MAPLE which is accomplished using a vertical line array and a towed acoustic source off the east cost of Korea in Oct. 2003. We localized the acoustic source using MFP. It is well known that the temperature structure in the experimental site is affected by the short period fluctuation such as internal wave. In this paper, it is found that the sidelobe level on the MFP ambiguity surface is increased being affected by the short period fluctuation.

It is very important for the safe navigation and fishing operation to ensure the hull response of a fishing vessel in rough seas. This is an experimental study on the dynamical characteristics of ship's motion during operating job and sailing in the real sea. The experiments were carried out on the small stern trawler in operating job and sailing, and then the ship's roll and pitch motion were simultaneously recorded by P/C according to the wave directions. From these data, the statistical properties and power spectra were obtained and the analysis of ship's motions in the both case were made. The results obtained are summarized follows : (1) The amplitudes of pitch motion don't appear a big different between trawl job and sailing, but at bow seas, its in sailing have a tendency to increase more than in trawl job. The amplitudes of roll motion appear a bog different between trawl job and sailing, but at beam sea, that slightly decreasing tendency. (2) The peak period of pitch motion in trawl job and sailing change, but that of roll motion don't change according to the direction of waves. (3) The warp tention cause the motion of hull to be reduce, if the tention of each side have a ballance.

A series of experiments on the resuspension of deposited fine-grained sediments were carried out in a recirculating straight flume to investigate the influence of the sediment type, water content and bed shear stress (${\tau}_b$) on the resuspension characteristics of the sediments. The sediments were sampled from Youngkwang coast and Youngdo coast which are located in the western sea and southeastern sea of Korea, respectively. Critical bed shear stress (${\tau}_c$) for resuspension was deduced for each experimental series. For the same sediment, critical bed shear stress for resuspension decreased but suspension mass or rate increased with increasing water content. The resuspension of deposited fine-grained sediments depended strongly on the water content, and the sediment type characterizing the inter-particle bond strength. It has been found that critical bed shear stress for resuspension in the unidirection flow is about 4 times higher than that in the combined wave-current flow, In case of lower bed shear stress, after an initially high suspension, suspension mass approaches a constant value due to the bed hardening with increasing time, but in case of higher bed shear stress, suspension mass increased successively due to the bed softening with time. Initial suspension rate, $E={\alpha}_3({\tau}_b/{\tau}_c-1)^{\beta}$ (where ${\alpha}_3$ and ${\beta}$=empirical constants), was estimated for each experimental series, ${\alpha}_3$ and ${\beta}$ values for the same sediment increased with water content.

Small fishing ports and coastal structures installed in a relatively low sea water depth disturb the wave induced current and cause the collapse of equilibrium state of sediment transport. These structures creates diffracted waves and matter the concentration of waves to cause the beach erosion. In order to mitigate these eroding problems on the beach, many counter measurements were proposed such as detached breakwater, groin or headland; however, these methods interrupt the aesthetic view of sandy beach due to the exposed structures above the sea level and have difficulty of applying to those beaches with the good scenery. Furthermore, some of these methods create secondary environmental problems after the installations. To eliminate these problems, one of the countermeasures, artificial reefs have been selected and used worldwide to minimize the disturbance of the scenery and secondary effects on the environment. Meanwhile, it is important to set the design elements for installing the artificial reefs such as that of length, opening width, clearing distances from the shoreline and more. Nevertheless, there are no construction manuals or standards for designing the artificial reefs with these important design elements yet. In this study, different conditions of artificial reefs were used with various cases throughout hydraulic model test to precisely analyze the changes of waves and currents to propose the standards of design elements to install the artificial reefs.

A fishing lamp is fishing gear to gather fish in the night. But the cost of oil which is used to a light fishing lamp, goes significantly up to almost one hundred million won for 50 tonnage vessels and forty million won in case of vessels less than 10 tonnages. This cost has almost taken 30.40% of total fishing costs. As oil price increases, the business condition of the fishery gets worse and worse. Therefore, it is very urgent to develop an economical fishing lamp, to solve the problem of fishery's business difficulty. This research aims at developing a fishing lamp for squid jigging fishery and hairtail angling fishery using the LED, which has excellent efficiency and durability. One fishing lamp has about 160Watt capacity and five fishing lamps are installed one aluminium panel in which sea water flows to emit generated heat from LED to outside. Developed fishing lamp lights to an effective direction of jigging and angling operation. This fishing lamp can be controlled to light the direction of fish shoal because the aluminium panel can be controlled to up and down direction. The wave length of fishing lamp has white and blue color. White color light is to gather fish shoal of horizontal direction and blue color light is to gather fish shoal of vertical direction. After development of this fishing lamp, 60.110 units are established on the boat, and operated fishing. Consequently, in the case of squid jigging, spent energy was reduced to 39%, in the case of hairtail angling, 68% of spent energy was reduced. And the catch was more than another boat.
We had conducted a numerical modeling to investigate seismic properties of gas hydrate with field parameters acquired over the East sea in 1998. We used a 2-D staggered grid finite difference method to generate synthetic elastic seismograms for multi-channel seismic survey, OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable) survey and VCS (Vertical Cable Seismic) survey. The results of this study showed that the method using staggered grid yielded stable results and could be used to seismic imaging. We could find out the high amplitude anomaly and the phase reversal phenomenon of reflection wave at interface between the gas hydrate layer and free gas layer such a BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector) which is the evidence for existence of gas hydrate in seismic reflection data. And we computed the reflection coefficients at the incident angles corresponding to offset distance with the synthetic seismograms. The reflection coefficients acquired from the numerical modeling were nearly consistent with the reflection coefficient computed by Shuey's equation.
