This study analyzed atmospheric conditions for the convergent cloud band (Cu-Cb line) in developing stage and its neighbouring convections formed over the East Sea on 1 February 2012, by using synoptic, satellites data, and WRF numerical simulation output of high resolution. In both satellite images and the WRF numerical simulation outputs, the Cu-Cb line that stretched out toward northwest-southeast was shown in the East Sea, and cloud lines of the L mode were aligned in accordance with the prevailing surface wind direction. However, those of the T mode were aligned in the direction of NE-SW, which was nearly perpendicular direction to the surface winds. The directions of the wind shear vectors connecting top winds and bottom winds of the moist layers of the L mode and the T mode were identical with those of the cloud lines of L mode and T mode, respectively. From the WRF simulation convection circulations with a convergence in the lower layer of atmosphere and a divergence above 1.5 km ASL (Above Sea Level) were identified in the Cu-Cb line. A series of small sized vortexes (maximum vortex: $320{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$) of meso-${\gamma}$-scale formed by convergences was found along the Cu-Cb lines, suggesting that Cu-Cb lines, consisting of numerous convective clouds, were closely associated with a series of the small vortexes. There was an absolute unstable layer (${\partial}{\theta}/{\partial}z$ < 0) between sfc and ~0.3 km ASL, and a stable layer (${\partial}{\theta}/{\partial}z$ > 0) above ~2 km ASL over the Cu-Cb line and cloud zones. Not only convectively unstable layers (${\partial}{\theta}_e/{\partial}z$ < 0) but also neutral layers (${\partial}{\theta}_e/{\partial}z{\approx}=0$) in the lower atmosphere (sfc~1.5 km ASL) were scattered around over the cloud zones. Particularly, for the Cu-Cb line there were convectively unstable layers in the surface layer, and neutral layers (${\partial}{\theta}_e/{\partial}z{\approx}=0$) between 0.2 and ~1.5 km ASL over near the center of the Cu-Cb line, and the neutralization of unstable layers came from the release of convective instability.
To understand the characteristics of low-level clouds (CLs), environmental variables are composited on each CL using individual surface observations and six-hourly upper-air meteorologies around the globe. Individual CLs has its own distinct environmental conditions. Over the eastern subtropical and western North Pacific Ocean in JJA, stratocumulus (CL5) has a colder sea surface temperature (SST), stronger and lower inversion, and more low-level cloud amount (LCA) than the climatology whereas cumulus (CL12) has the opposite characteristics. Over the eastern subtropical Pacific, CL5 and CL12 are influenced by cold and warm advection within the PBL, respectively but have similar cold advection over the western North Pacific. This indicates that the fundamental physical process distinguishing CL5 and CL12 is not the horizontal temperature advection but the interaction with the underlying sea surface, i.e., the deepening-decoupling of PBL and the positive feedback between shortwave radiation and SST. Over the western North Pacific during JJA, sky-obscuring fog (CL11), no low-level cloud (CL0), and fair weather stratus (CL6) are associated with anomalous warm advection, surface-based inversion, mean upward flow, and moist mid-troposphere with the strongest anomalies for CL11 followed by CL0. Over the western North Pacific during DJF, bad weather stratus (CL7) occurs in the warm front of the extratropical cyclone with anomalous upward flow while cumulonimbus (CL39) occurs on the rear side of the cold front with anomalous downward flow. Over the tropical oceans, CL7 has strong positive (negative) anomalies of temperature in the upper troposphere (PBL), relative humidity, and surface wind speed in association with the mesoscale convective system while CL12 has the opposite anomalies and CL39 is in between.
A numerical model is established in order to simulate the storm surges which were observed in the seas around Korea during typhoon and winter storm periods. The typhoons are Brenda (1985), Vera (1986) and Thelma (1987). the winter storm period is January 1-6, 1986. The simulated surges for the typhoon periods show good agreements with the recorded ones for the periods at the Korean coasts, but those for the winter storm show fair agreements in general tendencies, not in details. The model simulation in open sea shows a positive sea level near the typhoon center and a native sea level behind the typhoon. the positive surge seems to be due to the low pressure near a typhoon center and the negative on due to the wind stresses of the typhoon. The negative sea level is usually in the form of an elongated gyre. In the gyre, there is a cyclonic circulation of sea water, in which the pressure gradient force induced by the circular depression of the sea surface is balanced by the Coriolis force in readjusting stage.
Time-series change in Gyeongpo beach shoreline was illustrated using DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System, resolution < 0.6m) observation from April, 2009 to April, 2010. The shoreline was subdivided into 12 areas, and westward and eastward movement of shoreline position at each area was calculated. In general, the shoreline moved toward sea during summer, and it moved toward land during winter. The southern and northern part of the shoreline had different pattern in time-series. The shoreline in the southern part moved toward sea during summer and moved toward land during winter, but time-series pattern of the shoreline in the northern part was more complicated than that in the southern part. Pattern of time-series change in the northern part was made up of three different types; the first is that the shoreline moves continuously toward land, and the second thing is that the shoreline's movement is the opposite to the southern part, and the third thing is that the shoreline maintains a state of equilibrium without any great fluctuation. The total length of the shoreline was the largest during winter and the smallest during summer. In general, time-series change in the shoreline had positive(+) relationship with sea surface pressure and wind speed.
We investigated the short-term and local changes in the thermohaline front in the Jeju Strait, Korea, which is usually formed during winter and spring. To do so, we compared Real-Time Observation System by Ferryboat (RTOSF) data with wind data and routinely collected oceanographic data. During February and April 2007, a thermohaline front formed in the Jeju Strait around the 13-$14^{\circ}C$ isotherms and 33.0-33.5 isohalines. The thermohaline was clearly weakened and began moving southward in mid-March. The variations in the surface temperature and salinity showed a continuous north-south oscillation of the thermohaline front with a period of 3-10 days. The speed of the short-term and local fluctuation of thermohaline front was about 5-30 cm/s. We confirmed these findings by examining the variation in the maximum temperature gradient and $14^{\circ}C$ isotherm during the study period. These short-term and local changes had not been previously detected using serial oceanographic and satellite data. Analysis of local wind data revealed a northerly wind fluctuation with a period of 3-10 days, which was clearly related to the short-term and local changes in the thermohaline front. The short-term and local changes of the thermohaline front in the Jeju Strait originated from local changes in the winter monsoon in this area.

The separation mechanism of the Tsushima Warm Current and the effects of seasonal wind stress on the separation position are studied by use of a barotropic numerical model. The grid spacing of 0.25$^{\circ}$ both in latitude and longitude is used in the model, and Hellerman and Rosenstein's wind (1983) is applied to the sea surface as seasonal wind stress. According to the model results, during winter seasons (from October to March) when northly wind is prevailing, the Tsushima Warm Current is formed by direct separation from the Kuroshio on the continental slope southwest of Kyushu. On the other hand, during summer seasons (from April to September), the Taiwan Current that flows through the Taiwan Strait seems to be the origin of the Tsushima Warm Current. The Kuroshio reaches its maximum transport during winter seasons, and the minimum during summer. The transport of the Taiwan Current shows a phase lag of about 160$^{\circ}$ relative to the Kuroshio. The transport variation of the Tsushima Warm Current agrees with that of the Kuroshio when the former is shifted by 120$^{\circ}$(about 4 months).
Soil aggregate distribution and its relation to wind erosion were examined for the surface soil of the experimental plots for grasses in the New Incheon International Airport, of which soil was reclaimed with sea sands in the Youngjong Island. The soil aggregate with the size between 0.10 and 0.84mm was 74 percents. The 6 percents of the soil aggregates were non-erodible. With this aggregate distribution the wind erodiblity of the soil, I. was $380Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ with I value and climatic factor calculated for the dry period from November to May, $45.2Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ of the surface soil were estimated to be eroded. The erodible particles with 0.37mm diameter could fly to 17.8, 29.9 and 49.8 meters by saltation at wind speed of 7, 9 and $15m\;s^{-1}$, respectively. The wind erosion could be reduced by increasing vegetation coverage and applying hydrophyllic soil conditioner.

This paper presents the evidence on the considerably strong stratification - destratification(SD) phenomena during spring - neap tidal cycle in summer of 1992 based on the observed temperature, salinity and density data. To find out the main factors causing SD in the bay, we computed the rate of potential energy balance of the surface heat flux, tidal and wind stirring proposed by Simpson and Hunter (1974) and Simpson and Bowders (1981) using observed data. It was found that the energy of the wind stirring was one - order smaller than those of the heat flux and the tidal stirring. It means that the variation of stratification phenomena in the bay mainly depend on tidal stirring and sea surface heating in summer if there was no exceptionally strong wind event like a typhoon. Finally, we tested the effects of typhoon on the mixing characteristics of the bay using the example of a empirical typhoon model. It was found that when wind speed is larger than 15m/sec in Deukryang Bay, the wind energy was always larger than the average heating energy based on empirical typhoon model test. Particularly, typhoon passed on the left side of the bay, strong wind energy happened, which is almost the same as tidal energy of spring tide.

The objective of this paper is to explore the short-term variability of water temperature and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) derived from in-situ and satellite data (NOAA, Sea WiFS and QuikScat) in the upwelling region of the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula in June and August, 2007. Particularly we focused on the spatial variability of sea surface temperature(SST) and Chl-a in the East Korean Warm Current region. In the results of the in-situ data, the peaks of Chl-a in june was shown at a depth of 50m The peaks of Chl-a in August was shown at a depth of 10m at the stations 4 and 5 near the land, and a depth of 30m at the other stations. The Chl-a concentrations in August were also lower than those in june except for station 5. As a result, the peaks of Chl-a in August occurred at a depth of 20~40 m shallower than those of Chl-a in june. This indicates that the nutrient-rich water within the mixed layer depth may be immediately supplied by the coastal upwelling, which is due to the southerly component of wind. The relationship between SST and Chl-a showed a negative correlation, and the high concentration of Chl-a occurred in the cold water area. The southerly wind and the East Korean Warm Current influenced a remarkable offshore movement of the cold water and Chl-a near the coastal area.
Water masses and circulations around Korean peninsula are briefly described based on recent studies. The results of theses studies are discussed from the physical point of view. Oceanic conditions in this region are largely due to the roles played by the Tsushima Warm Current, an onshore extension of the Kuroshio, and local conditions such as wind, surface heat flux and fresh water input etc. To the south and west of Korea, the northern/western border of the Tsushima Warm Current Water is roughly the line joining Taiwan and Cheju island. In summer, it is affected by large amount of fresh water discharged from the Changjiang and in winter, an intrusion of this water into the Yellow Sea is induced by the prevailing northwesterly monsoon wind. To the east of Korea, the Tsushima Warm Current Water presents roughly south of the line joining the wast coast of Korea near 37-38$^{\circ}$N and Tsugaru-Soya Straits in the northern Japan. But this situation, together with those in deeper layers, may greatly be changed by winter atmospheric conditions (wind and surface heat flux). The seas around Korea are not yet physically well understood and many problems wait physical explanations. Some problems, along with personal views of them, are mentioned.
