  • This article explores what is the genuine Koreanness in Korean arithmetic by examining what kind of influence the Chinese arithmetic had on the Korean arithmetic and how the Korean arithmetic scholars had accepted and utilized it. Because the main stream of Korean culture before the end of Chosun dynasty was located under the umbrella of the Chinese philosophy, technique, and culture, it is necessary to make researches on the historical documents and materials in order to establish the milestone in the Korean arithmetic history for the Korean arithmetic scholars. For this research, the arithmetic books published in between the sixteenth century and the end of Chosun dynasty are mainly consulted and discussed, dealing with the bibliographical introduction in the arithmetic Part in Re Outline History of the Korean Science & Technology written by Prof. Yong-Woon Kim.

  • Statistics was not recognized until the early 20th century as an independent science, and statistical education research came to an international milestone in the late 1940s. The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical development of statistics education research, focusing on the activities of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE). Statistics education in Korea is considered with regard to the history of international research on statistics education in this study. It implies for the direction of statistical education research to domestic mathematics education researchers and statistical researchers related to statistical education research.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the circumstances of sniping warfare and to prove the importance of usage of snipers. The research method was referred to the history of foreign warfares and autobiographies, articles, and testimonies of snipers. Also, various news reports were also studied to collect information. The content of this study investigates the circumstances of sniping combat scenes from its first appearance in the world's major warfares to contemporary ones. Also, the research contains the history of weapons, ammunition, rifles, and the principle of rifle shooting including ballistics. We hope this study provides ROK Army and government agencies the foundation of sniping and thereby improving the effectiveness of correspondence to international conflicts and terrorism.

  • Time history dynamic structural analysis is a time consuming procedure when used for large-scale structures or iterative analysis in structural optimization. This article proposes a new methodology for approximate prediction of extremum point of the response history via wavelets. The method changes original record into a reduced record, decreasing the computational time of the analysis. This reduced record can be utilized in iterative structural dynamic analysis of optimization and hence significantly reduces the overall computational effort. Design examples are included to demonstrate the capability and efficiency of the Reduced Record Method (RRM) when utilized in optimal design of frame structures using meta-heuristic algorithms.

  • In order to study the performance of levees reinforced with steel sheet piles under high water condition, a series of model tests was conducted by simulating the high water condition before and after applying severe seismic loading history. As a result, the seepage behavior through the subsoil layers underlying the levee was not significantly affected by the seismic loading history. It was also verified that, irrespective of the seismic loading history, the sheet piles installed at the levee crest or shoulder are effective in preventing the breakage of levees caused by overflow. In addition, applicability of drainage works at the foot of the levee in preventing the seepage failure was confirmed.

  • In this study, we examine Maeng Hwa-seop's academic activities, focusing on articles published in Uirim, JKM (Journal of Korean Medicine), and other branch journals which were affiliated with the Society of Korean Medicine. The present study charts and summarizes the papers published in the above journals. By organizing Maeng Hwa-seop's papers and making tables, we find that his research can be divided into four categories: symptoms and diseases, prescriptions, academic presentations, and translations of medical literatures. Based on this study, we hope that further researches about the academic activities of Maeng Hwa-seop can be conducted in the future.

  • Paper folding is a versatile tool that can be used not only as a mathematical model for analyzing the geometric properties of plane and spatial figures but also as a visual method for finding the real roots of polynomial equations. The historical evolution of origami's geometric and algebraic techniques has led to the discovery of definitions and properties that can enhance one's cognitive understanding of mathematical concepts and generate mathematical interest and motivation on an emotional level. This paper aims to examine the history of origami geometry, the utilization of origami for solving polynomial equations, and the process of determining the real roots of quadratic, cubic, and quartic equations through origami techniques.

  • Uirimchalyo (醫林撮要), one of the most important books in the history of Korean Medicine (KM), has not been researched within the framework provided by Yi'an (醫案), an East Asian tradition of describing clinical encounters with the therapies employed. In modern times, this practice of Yi'an might be similar to the outline of a singular "case study". The authors designed the study to analyze the basic information of Yi'an within the Uirimchalyo and to contribute to the foundations of employing Yi'an in Korean Medicine. A standard was established, and the 123 Yi'ans were extracted, most of which were taken from the chapter, Historic Doctors (歷代醫學姓氏). Using this information and in comparison with other medical books such as Euibangyoochui (醫方類聚), the authors learned that the Yi'ans from the Jinyuansidajia (金元四大家), including those of four eminent clinicians in Jin (金) and Yuan (元) Dynasty, are excluded from Uirimchalyo. The authors identified that Yi'ans from other medical books, are cited in the Uirimchalyo but with different format, not with the traditionally understood form of Yi'an. This study of the Uirimchalyo Yi'an resulted in three important understandings of Yi'an. First, the mere number of Uirimchalyo Yi'an is meaningful in that it raised the genre of Yi'an to the a level not previously recognized. Second, in the history of Korean Medicine, Yi'an is first systematized in the Uirimchalyo at the chapter of Historic Doctors. Third, Uirimchalyo raised the concept of usefulness of Yi'an, to the practice of Korean Medicine.
