Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate middle school students' knowledge and attitudes related to breast feeding. Methods: The knowledge and attitudes related to breast feeding were measured by structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation, using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The level of knowledge of breast feeding was 9.02 points out of 25 points, in average. Attitudes towards breast feeding was 3.77 points out of 5 points, in average. There were significant differences in the knowledge of breast feeding according to grade, feeding type, family type, experiences of observing breast feeding, experiences of obtaining breast feeding information, will to practice breast feeding, and the reasons for low breast feeding rate. There were significant differences in attitudes towards breast feeding according to gender, grade, feeding type, family type, experiences of observing breast feeding, experiences of obtaining breast feeding information, timing of breast feeding education, will to practice breast feeding, and the reasons for low breast feeding rate. There was a significant positive correlation between the knowledge of breast feeding and attitudes towards breast feeding. Conclusion: Middle school students should be provided with various education programs to improve their knowledge of and attitudes toward breast feeding.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental resources for preventing adolescents' bullying behavior. For this aim we analyzed parents' rearing attitudes and adolescents' personality characteristics effecting on bullying experiences. Methods: We carried out a questionnaire survey at middle and high school located in Anyang, Gwacheon, Gunpo from July 8 to 22, 2013. Data were collected from 756 students. By using SPSS 20.0, data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis Results: There was a close relationship among parents' rearing attitudes, adolescents' personality characteristics, and bullying experiences. Parents' affectionate rearing attitudes reduced adolescents' bullying experiences, on the other hand parents' hostile and rejective rearing attitudes increased. The adolescents with high responsibility had low bullying experiences, otherwise adolescents with high activity had high bullying experiences.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the knowledge and attitudes about AIDS between an activity-oriented and a lecture-oriented AIDS prevention education in middle school boys. Methods: Each of 60 middle school boys in M city, Gyeongsangnam-do, was assigned to the experimental or control group. The activity-oriented AIDS prevention education in experimental group and the lecture-oriented education in control group were provided for a 45 minutes class per week for 4 weeks, respectively. Date were collected with questionnaires and analyzed through $x^2$-test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The experimental group and control group were homogeneous in knowledge and attitudes about AIDS prevention before the study. In AIDS prevention knowledge, there was no significant interaction of times by groups (F=0.033, p=.930); but the main effect of times was significant (F=63.950, p<.001). In attitudes toward AIDS, there was a significant interaction of times by groups (F=8.892, p<.001). Conclusion: The activity-oriented AIDS prevention education was an effective teaching strategy to foster positive attitudes toward AIDS prevention in middle school boys. Therefore, systematic and sustained development of AIDS prevention education reflecting learners' characteristics is required.
Objectives: For students with epilepsy, schools are a critical environment for managing the disease properly. This study examined awareness of epilepsy, attitudes toward epilepsy, and health literacy among school teachers in Turkey. Methods: This study was conducted in a city in Turkey with 1408 public school teachers from June 2021 to September 2021. Results: The median scores of the scales were 5, 29, and 32 for epilepsy awareness, epilepsy attitudes, and health literacy, respectively. Epilepsy awareness was higher in women, and epilepsy attitudes were more positive in women than men (p<0.05). While epilepsy awareness was higher in primary school teachers, epilepsy attitudes were more positive in secondary school teachers (p<0.05). Epilepsy awareness was lower in secondary school teachers (odds ratio [OR], 1.27; p<0.05), those who did not have an individual with epilepsy in their family/social environment (OR, 1.57; p<0.001), those who did not have a student with epilepsy in their class (OR, 1.45; p<0.05), and in those who had not witnessed an epilepsy seizure (OR,1.19; p<0.05). Compared to those with positive attitudes regarding epilepsy, epilepsy awareness was 1.36 times lower in those with negative attitudes (p<0.001). Epilepsy awareness was 1.92 times lower in those with limited health literacy than those with adequate health literacy (p<0.001). Conclusions: In this study, low epilepsy awareness, negative epilepsy attitudes, and limited health literacy were common among teachers. The findings from this study suggest that panels, workshops, and health training on epilepsy should be organized for school teachers and included at regular intervals in certified first-aid practices.
Objectives: More than half of youth smokers start to use cigarettes in their middle-school ages. Thus, middle school students should be the primary target population for smoking prevention education although the technical smoking rate is higher in high school students than in middle school students. Based on this significance, this study examined personal and social factors reinforcing non-smoking middle school students to acquire positive attitudes on smoking cigarettes. Methods: A total of 1,081 students of the 3 middle schools in Seoul participated in the self-administered survey. The designated schools were conveniently selected and all the 2nd-grade students of the schools participated in the survey. The questionnaire asked reinforcing social factors of smoking such as, family and parental history of drug use, close-people's smoking and drug use, personal experience of drug use, perceived smoking and drug use knowledge and attitudes, perceived smoking intention in future, and other delinquent behaviors. Results: Personal experience of drug and delinquent behaviors, perceived smoking intention in future, perceived knowledge of smoking, educational experience, and close-people's smoking and drug use were significantly related to students' attitudes on smoking. The significant factors affecting the positive attitudes of smoking were living with broken family and few education experience of smoking in school as social factors and strong smoking intention in future, high score of delinquent behavior, and low score of drug use knowledge as personal factors. Conclusions: Adolescents' strong smoking intention and little smoking education experience would primary personal and social factors reinforcing positive attitudes on smoking. Thus, school-based educational programs preventing smoking intention need to be developed and to be delivered to middle school students to minimize the future smoking population in a long-term perspective.
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for developing a program for effective health education about AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) by investigating the knowledge and attitudes of middle and high school students about AIDS. The subjects were 476 middle school students and 658 high school students from Seoul and Kang Won province. The data were collected from November 19 to December 18. 1996. using a 56-item questionnaire. and analyzed by SAS program for t-test. x2-test. and pearson correlation coefficients. The results were as follows : 1. High school students had more knowledge than middle school students about AIDS. 2. Male. students from Seoul. and students who had drinking experience and smoking experience among middle school students. and male. students from Seoul. and students of non-coeducation among high school students were more knowledgeable about AIDS. 3. Misconceptions about the transmission of AIDS through non-intimate contact were especially common among middle school students. And a high proportion of middle and high school students knew very little about the symptoms of AIDS. 4. High school students had more positive attitudes toward AIDS than middle school students. 5. Students from Seoul and students who had smoking experience among middle school students. and students from Seoul and non-coeducation and students who had substance use experience among high school students were more positive attitudes about AIDS. 6. Most of the middle and high school students agreed that there is a need for AIDS education. 7. Middle and high school students reported that had learned about AIDS mostly from TV. Since students in the middle-school age group are especially at risk for developing AIDSrelated behaviors. this study findings suggest that it is crucial to develop school-based AIDS education programs that help students acquire the knowledge and attitudes to adopt and maintain behaviors that reduce the risk of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and other related health problems.
The purpose of the study is to explore how parenting attitudes, ego resilience, and care affects adolescents' adjustment to school so as to provide a necessary basic guideline needed to seek various intervention methods. To achieve this end, the study referred to the 2014 Annual Report of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. By using both SPSS 19.0 and AMOS 19.0, the study yielded the following results. First, the study showed that parenting attitudes, ego resilience, care, and school adjustment all have a positive correlation. Second, by conducting path analysis in order to verify the mediating effect of ego resilience and care with regards to the relationship between parenting attitudes and school adjustment, the direct influence that parenting attitudes had on school adaptation was shown to be relevant. Third, adolescents' ego resilience and care have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between parenting attitudes and school adaptation. Therefore, together with intervention in actual school settings, assessing various factors that would aid the recovery of adolescents' characters and pursuing a positive reinforcement of character by finding protective factors would enable this study to be used as a basic guideline that would prevent adolescents' maladjustment to school and social deviance as well as aid the growth of their characters.
For this study of adolescent attitudes toward child sexual abuse, 200 students attending high school and college participated in a group survey. The Child Sexual Abuse Myth Scale (Collings, 1999) was used to measure social attitudes toward child sexual abuse. Overall, the attitudes of the respondents placed between negative and positive attitudes. Nevertheless, strong negative myths and stereotypes, particularly blame diffusion, denial of abusiveness, and restrictive abuse stereotypes were found in specific situations. High school students and male students had more negative myths and stereotypes than college students and female students. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated the variables of education level and gender as the most important predictors in explaining students' attitudes toward child sexual abuse.
This study was designed to find characteristics and patterns in Obese student's attitudes toward the school obesity program. Q-methodology was used as a research tool and the data were collected from October 1st, 1997 to April 30th, 1998. The results are as follows: 1. Q-sampling has been derived from the literature, and in-depth interviews of different groups (primarily students and normal weight students. Its credibility and validity were also tested by nursing and Q-methodology professors as well as school nurses. 34 statements were selected from a total of 197 statements collected. 2. In a P-sampling, 38 samples were selected. 3. Based on a 9 point scale, the selected respondents rated their operant definition of Obese student's attitudes toward school obesity programs. 4. The results of the above procedures were analyzed by a PCQ program. The results revealed that there are four attitudes toward the school obesity program. These four are the following: 1) First, demand for little exposure, which consisted of thirteen subjects. 2) Second, demand for other's support, which consisted of six subjects. 3) Third, demand for self-control, which consisted of four subjects. 4) Forth, demand for other's stimulation and motivation, which consisted of five subjects. In conclusion, this study discovers obese students have attitudes toward the school obesity program. By identifying the nature of each of the these types this study can be useful to manage and develop a school obesity program.
