  • Objectives: This is an explanatory correlational study to identify the relationship among knowledge, attitudes about cancer, self efficacy and health behavior for cancer prevention in school-age children. Methods: Data were collected from 488 students in grades 5 or 6 who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS 18.0. Results: There were significant differences in health behavior for cancer prevention between upper 25% and lower 25% group of attitudes about cancer and self efficacy. Result from the multiple regression analysis revealed difference in the related factors and in the magnitude of the relationship evaluated by the standardized beta coefficients. Significant factors, listed by the magnitude of beta coefficients, were self efficacy, attitudes about cancer, perceived health status. These variables accounted for 30.5% of health behavior for cancer prevention. Conclusions: Based on results of the present study, systemic health education about cancer prevention for school-age children is suggested. Further research is necessary in order to draw consensus on roles of the related factors of health behavior for cancer prevention.

  • Apparel purchase behaviors were investigated for the high school girls grouped by attitude toward fashion. Differences in attitudes toward fashion were also investigated among the groups determined by demographic characteristics. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire survey to 600 high school girls living in Seoul, and 480 were used for the data analysis. Cluster analysis, Chi-sguare analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan\`s multiple range test were used for data analysis. Technical school students and those who spending higher amount of monthly allowances showed favorable attitudes toward fashion. Based on the attitudes toward fashion, respondents were classified into 3 groups : fashion-oriented(32.3%), fashion-conformed(47.3%), and unconcerned(20.4%). Among the 3 groups, the Fashion-oriented tended to make purchase decision for clothing based on there own, or peer\`s opinions, to use personal sources for information search, to spend more money for clothing, and to consider design and brand names as the most important criteria when purchasing apparel products than the less fashion-oriented did. Among clothing styles popular to students, the most appropriately perceived for student wear were semi-formal style, and the least appropriate ones were wearing bold colored and patterned underwear for the purpose of showing out. Most of the popular styles among high school girls were perceived less than appropriate student\`s attire.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the efforts of cooperative loaming through a student team-achievement division(STAD) model on elementary school students' learning achievements and science ,elated attitudes toward the field of astronomy. This study was conducted using 72 students of the fifth-grade class in a elementary school in Busan. The 18 science lessons of the 'Family of the sun' were executed over 6 weeks in the fifth-year students classes. In this study, the experimental group were exposed to cooperative learning through STAD and the contrast group were exposed to a traditional teacher-centered class. The results show that the STAD class of the experimental group had a greater effect upon the elementary school students' science learning achievement and science related attitudes toward the field of astronomy than those of the comparison group. Additionally, the students recognized that cooperative learning provokes both interest in loaming and in their studies generally and also they expressed a desire to continue with cooperative teaming methods.

  • It is well known that high school girls' mean achievement levels in science tests are lower than high school boys' and that fewer women than men are employed as scientists and engineers pursue scientific careers. Many research attributed the sex difference in achievement level in science and the lack of women in science among others, to the experiential differences in scientific activities and the differences in attitudes toward science and scientists. Therefore, the study had its object to examine the sex difference by high school students in scientific experience and attitudes toward science and scientists. The differences in science experiences were identified at eight schools over rural and urban areas in Kangwon province. Science activities surveyed included use of experimental materials and instruments, observation of scientific phenomena, and extracurricular scientific activities. Attitude scale contained the nature of science, scientific research methods and philosophical views held by scientists. The study found sex differences in scientific experiences and attitudes. i. e.: fewer high school girls than boys had experience with scientific activities, especially with extracurricular activities; however, girls had more positive attitude toward science and more active desire to participate in science. Consequently, the study implies that, in order to narrow the gaps between achievement levels for boys and girls, science education should take consideration of the sex difference in experiences with and attitudes toward science.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to test an obesity management program for elementary school children. The program was assessed by examining its effects on the obesity, dietary attitudes, dietary habits, and exercise habits. Methods: The participants were 65 elementary school children, of which 32 were assigned for the experimental group and 33 for the control group. The experimental group received an 8 weeks obesity management program. The outcome variables were measured before and after the program. $X^2$-test and t-test were used to analyze the data. Results: After the obesity management program, the BMI and fat mass percentage in the experimental group were significantly reduced. The score for dietary attitudes and dietary habits changed in a positive direction. Conclusions: The findings from this study suggest that the obesity management program was effective in decreasing the rate of obesity and increasing the score for dietary attitudes and dietary habits. The program should be effective in the management of obesity in elementary school children.

  • The young casual wear market has been recently increased by the great buying power of the target consumers, although they don't have their own discretionary income. The purpose of this study was to investigate clothing attitudes of the adolescent consumers of the young casual wear market according to the groups of personality types. The questions on introversion/extroversion of MBTI test were adopted to measure introversion/extroversion in personal characteristics. The questions in "The personality diagnosis of high school students" developed by Lee, Chongseung and Chung, Bummo were adopted to measure stability, dominance, sociability and autonomy. Variables of clothing attitudes were composed with attentiveness, modesty and conformity. A total 488 high school students in Seoul participated in the survey. SPSS Win 10 statistical package was used to analyze the data: frequency, t-test, ANOVA and factor analysis. After statistical analysis, the following results were found. Groups of introversion and extroversion, and groups of low, medium and high degree of stability, dominance, sociability and autonomy showed no significant difference based on sex difference and school types. Students who has a high extroversion showed a high degree of attentiveness in clothing attitudes. Students who has the lowest sociability and the lowest autonomy showed a high degree of attentiveness. Students with the lowest autonomy showed a high degree of conformity. The younger the students were, the higher their attentiveness and modesty in clothing attitudes.

  • This is the study on a teaching method for improving problem-solving ability in mathematics. If this method is performed step by step in solving problems, learners can approach problems in a variety of ways. This step-by-step teaching method will create some changes among learners. The purpose of this experiment was to determine what effects resulted from this method, especially which effects arose in the affective areas of learning math. For the experiment, learning materials were divided into 73 parts. And the subjects, who are low-leveled and have negative attitudes towards mathematics, were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to this method for four months (treatment group), and the other group(control group) was not. According to the result, though there were few changes, the treatment group came to be more interested in math than before and also negative attitudes towards math were reduced gradually, as compared with the control group. In this study, three factors were investigated: interest in math, attitudes toward math, and learning -achievement in math. Significant changes were found in two factors: interest in math and learning-achievement in math. No significant changes were found in the area of attitudes towards math. In conclusion, if this method is adopted and performed regularly, it is likely that the problem-solving skills will be improved and the negative attitudes towards math will be reduced.
