Southeast Asian studies in Singapore has had a problem with locating local scholarship from the outset. The initiation of English-track scholarship was done by British scholars while Chinese scholars in the beginning were not considered as local people but as sojourners who identified China as their fatherland. If the latter had successfully located their scholarship in the post-colonial environment of Singapore, the job of identifying local scholarship would have been much easier. Indeed, for some time in the 1960s-70s, there existed a relatively strong local scholarship that was based mainly at Nanyang University. However, they became marginalized as English became dominant not just in education but also in Singapore society. Unlike the Chinese-track scholarship, the English-track scholarship in Singapore has developed greatly over the years. The establishment of ISEAS was the crystallized form of Singapore's endeavors to develop a Singapore brand of Southeast Asian studies to the world. Alongside ISEAS, NUS has carried on the English-track Southeast Asian studies and become a world-class university in this academic field. The formation of the Southeast Asian Programme and ARI marked a cornerstone for NUS in advancing Southeast Asian studies. However, Singaporean scholarship continues to be weak in comparison to foreign scholarship. In the absence of strong local scholarship, the typical way in which Singapore has chosen to develop Southeast Asian studies has been to establish world-class institutes and to bring in foreign talents. This strategy has perhaps paid off since it has situated Singapore as the prime place where scholars gather, information goes around and quality research outcomes are published. However, whether or not it has strengthened local scholarship remains a controversial issue. The dominant contribution of foreign scholars continues to pose the problem of whether the ownership of Southeast Asian studies in Singapore belongs to Singapore itself. The identification of scholarship in Singapore is an unsettled matter.

The article reports the results of an investigation on the practice of providing digital scholarship services at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This study is part of an ongoing research project entitled Developing a digital scholarship service framework for universities at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. It employed a qualitative research approach through in-depth interviews with 31 individuals who are university managers, library managers, lecturers, and postgraduate and undergraduate students from six member universities and Central Library of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. Research results show that some digital scholarship services have been provided at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. However, they have not been yet systematically implemented and have not met users' needs. Lack of needed resources such as space, technology infrastructure, human resources, finance, and stakeholder support are among major challenges in developing digital scholarship services. The management of existing digital scholarship services is fragmented without a clear policy for developing digital scholarship and supporting services. The study contributes to the existing knowledge by adding substantially to current understanding of the practice of providing digital scholarship services in Vietnam's universities in the transition period, from state control to autonomy, which has not been much addressed in previous research. Furthermore, this study can be a useful reference for higher education institutions in developing countries regarding implementation of digital scholarship services.
Through the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program, the government of the Republic of Korea annually invites over a thousand international students to learn the Korean language and obtain a higher education degree from Korean universities. One of the program's goals is positioned within the public diplomacy framework. Korea seeks to cultivate Korea-friendly networks and transform GKS students and alumni into ambassadors to contribute to Korea's promotion abroad. However, there is no clarity on whether this mechanism works as expected. This study examines GKS students' relationship-building experiences with South Koreans during and after the exchange program. Analysis of twenty in-depth interviews with the program's alumni reveals both what facilitates and what obstructs personal and professional relationship-building between scholarship recipients and South Koreans at different stages (language year and degree years) of the program and after graduation. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for universities, GKS administrators, and the South Korean government regarding their policies for scholarship holders.
This study aims to investigate and compare with each other the global scholarship policy of Korea, China, and Japan, which is supported by government, and to suggest the improvement plan of the Global Korea Scholarship(GKS) program in Korea. Based on the results of comparison study with Chinese and Japanese policies, the implications for GKS program are as follows. First, GKS program needs to be redesigned according to the boundaries of in-bound and out-bound countries. Especially, the GKS program for 'neighboring countries' focusing on East Asian countries, could be developed as the Union of East Asian Nations. Second, to maximize the performance of GKS, the government needs to cooperate more actively and systematically among related departments through all the steps as a national foreign policy, that is, from establishing goals to evaluating performance. Third, the perspectives on GKS must be expanded, not just as a kind of scholarship, but as a policy for developing Korean culture and language. Fourth, out-bound GKS programs must be greatly expanded in relation to short-term programs as well as the quality of in-bound GKS programs. Finally, out-bound GKS programs for the Asian developing countries need to be redesigned and operated under the focus of ODA, to support the invited Parties beyond the foreign resource policy.
Contemporary Buddhist scholarship in Korea has been strongly affected by its origins in the Victorian era, when Western religious scholars sought to rationalize and historicize the study of religion. Modern Korean scholars, trained within the Western scholarly paradigm, share this prejudice which tends toward the rational. The result is a skewed understanding of Buddhism, emphasizing its philosophical and theoretical aspects at the expense of seemingly "irrational" religious elements based on the direct experience of meditation practice. This paper seeks to look at the historical context in which modern Korean Buddhist scholarship had been shaped during the colonial period of Japan. Two case studies will be examined particularly in the light of post-colonial perspectives of Buddhist studies: the case of Jonghong Bak(1903-1976) and the case of Donghwa Gim(1902-1980), two pioneering scholars in the field of Buddhist studies. They share similarities as well as differences. Both were born and active at almost the same period, during which Korean peninsula experienced modernization forced upon by Japanese colonialism. And thus, the experience of colonialism and modernization brought them into conflict between tradition and modernity. Their responses, however, were different. Pak, originally trained in Western philosophy, especially German philosophy, wanted to study Korean Buddhism in the context of the so-called Korean Philosophy per se. He was motivated to seek for the national and cultural identity of Korea. And thus his scholarship on Korean Buddhism naturally led him to look for an original Korean Buddhism distinct from the Buddhism of India, China and Japan. On the other hand, Gim, who became a monk in his youth, later went to Japan for college where he was exposed to modern Buddhist scholarship. He was the first to introduce modern Buddhist scholarship to Korea, and since then, contemporary Korean Buddhist scholarship owes much to his contributions. Despite his contributions to contemporary Korean Buddhist scholarship, if we look at his efforts in the light of post-colonial perspective, his ideas need to be reevaluate.
The purpose of this study was to conduct a survey and analysis of 249 children of the Fragment Love Sharing Society to find out the impact of the association program on children. Correlation analysis was conducted using the SPSS Statistics 23 program to confirm the relationship between scholarship students and scholarship management institutions, and regression analysis was conducted to confirm the impact of the relationship between scholarship students and the scholarship management institution. According to the analysis, the higher the satisfaction level of scholarships, the higher the level of career proficiency and yesterday's happiness, and the more satisfied the child is with the benefits of the crumb scholarship, the higher the sense of self-respect, career maturity, and yesterday's happiness. Based on these findings, support measures were discussed for children with ties.

In this paper, we configured the panel data of four years using the information of Higher Education In Korea (2010~2013) and studied the influence of tuition and scholarships on the stop-out rate of national university and private university separately through a panel analysis. Three models are implemented considering various variables suck as faculty-student ratios, employment rate, per pupil expenditure, average tuition, and per pupil scholarship. This study showed that the lower net tuition and the higher per pupil off-campus scholarship lowered the stop-out rate at national universities and the lower tuition and the higher per pupil scholarship lowered the stop-out rate at private universities.

This research pertains to the interpretation of the many characteristics of the growing process of Library and Information Science in Korea with respect to its connection with discussion of the system of discipline. The result of the research are as follows. The Library and Information Science in Korea has gone through three distinct stages. The first stage spans the period from the late 50s to the 1960s during which three was an attempt to establish a relatively independent system of scholarship of Library and Information Science, although it was still heavily reliant on scholarship from Japan and the United States. The main characteristics of this first period is, firstly, that there a n.0, ppeared, for the first time, an awareness of a need to escape the attitude of foreign-orientation and to develop our own scholarship. Secondly, an effort was made to constitute the scholarship as a science (social science). Thirdly, there began a faint effort to import and a n.0, pply Information Science. The second stage covers the period between the 70s and the 80s, and saw the induction of Information Science begin in earnest and become the subject of education and research. The period was also marked by exploration of an alternative term to "Library Science", which was at the time being used. In addition, the period was a time of confusion for the examination of scholarship due to the induction of the new field of Information Science to what had already been a fragile structure of scholarship. This phenomenon served to intensify the doubts which had surfaced about existing term of Library Science, and ultimately played a large role in the a n.0, ppearance of the new term of Library and Information Science. Of course, there were a number of reasons which had made the change of term difficult, but it and be seen that the term change began in earnest after the change was adopted in the names of the university departments associated with the field in the late 80s. The third stage covers the period after the begining of the 90s. This stage saw the prominence of criticism and self-examination of the existing distorted foundational structure of Library and Information Sciences in Korea at the time, and, at the same time, a new methodology or research paradigms were advocated. It was a presenation of a new way of achieving a "Korean Library and Information Science" in order to understand and overcome not only the problems within the Korean libraries, but also within Library and Information Science in Korea. This caused repercussions to be felt not only among academics, but also among those actually working within the library systems. It moved academics toward a more practical scholarship, it inspired the prominence of a new scholarly methodology called a reform in academic writing, and even influenced specific research activities.research activities.

This paper aims to shed light on the structure of "Eonji[言志]" to demonstrate that it is a song with educational purposes, which is evident in its meaning and constitution. Based on various records of the epilogue and from the texts handed down several generations, it is clear that is an educational song that describes the life of ascholar and the core of knowledge as considered by Lee-Huang. Therefore, the meaning contained in Eonji[言志] is closely related to Lee-Huang's thoughts and it reflects the Confucian way of life. In the 4thphase, Pimi-ilin[彼美一人] of Eonji[言志] states that self-learning and serving the king can be carried out concurrently. The 5th phase of Eonji[言志] describes the anxiety of the lord for the wiseman and urges people to live a life full of consideration. This shows that one should not disregard the fact that a wise man's scholarship and life can contribute to the politics of the real world, even if the wise one chooses to lead a life of seclusion; even when the wise man enters the word of politics, his behavior and traits must not deviate from the calm course of self-cultivation in nature. The structure of Eonji[言志] and its different phases comprising nature, scholarship, and education deal with the following matters: "the meaning of retirement into nature (1stphase)," "nature+the practice of scholarship (2ndphase)," "scholarship+the practice of education (3rdphase)," "nature+the stance of scholarship (4thphase)," "scholarship+the stance of education (5thphase)," and "the beauty of nature+idea of scholarship and education (6thphase)."
