  • The problem of minimizing total tardiness on a batch processing machine with incompatible job families when there are sequence independent setup times between families is studied where all jobs of the same family have identical processing times and jobs of different families cannot be processed together. A batch processing machine can process a number of jobs, within a maximal batch size, simultaneously as a batch. The processing time required of each batch is equal to the one of jobs. A dynamic programming algorithm which gives the optimal solution, and several heuristics are presented. Performance of simple dispatching rules based on due dates are compared, and the best of them is used as an initial solution for the decomposition algorithm, which is shown to give good schedules in relatively short computational time.

  • This paper presents a framework for the hierarchical PPC(Production Planning and Control) in make-to-order environment with job shop. The characteristics of the environment are described as : 1) project with non-repetitive and individual production, 2) short delivery date, 3) process layout with large scales manufacturing. 4) job shops. The PPC in a make-to-order typically are organized along hierarchical fashions. A model is proposed for the hierarchical job shop scheduling based on new concepts of production system, work and worker organization. Then, a new integrated hierarchical framework is also developed for the PPC based on concepts of the proposed job shops scheduling model. Finally, the proposed framework has been implemented in the Electric Motor Manufacturing and the results showed good performance.

  • This paper presents possibilistic job scheduling based on the membership function as an alternative to probabilistic job scheduling and illustrates a methodology for solving job sequencing problem which the opinions of experts greatly disagree in each processing time. Triangular fuzzy numbers are used to represent the processing times of experts. Here, the comparison method is based on the dominance property. The criteria for dominance are presented. By the dominance criteria, for each job, a mojor TFN and a minor TFN are selected and apessimistic sequence with mojor TFNs and an optimistic sequence with minor TFNs are computed. The three-machine flow shop problem is considered as an example to illustrate the approach.

  • Generally the Multiprocessor Scheduling(MPS) problem is difficult to solve because of the precedence of the tasks, and it takes a lot of time to obtain its optimal solution. Though Genetic Algorithm(GA) does not guarantee the optimal solution, it is practical and effective to solve the MPS problem in a reasonable time. The algorithm developed in this research consists of a improved GA and CP/MISF(Critical Path/Most Immediate Successors First). A new genetic operator is derived to make GA more efficient. It runs parallel CP/MISF with Ga to complement the faults of GA. The solution by the developed algorithm is compared with that of CP/MISF, and the better is taken as a final solution. As a result of comparative analysis by using numerical examples, although this algorithm does not guarantee the optimal solution, it can obtain an approximate solution that is much closer to the optimal solution than the existing GA's.

  • This paper presents a methodology for development of a heterarchical control system in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) environment. A Petri net based model is applied for development of control software. A real-time scheduling methodology for the heterarchical system is also developed and it is used as a software entity in the overall architecture. The partition of generic and specific modules in control software development is emphasized. The control system performs its control tasks in two stages: (1) generation of generic control code and distribution of them to each controller entity prior to system execution; (2) generation of specific control code according to job arrival and its process plan. The control software and the scheduling algorithm are evaluated by a simulation program.

  • This paper considers a two-machine flow-shop scheduling problem for minimizing mean flow time. Each job has three non-preemptive operations, where the first and third operations must be Processed on the first and second machines, respectively, but the second operation can be processed on either machine. A lower bound based on SPT rule is derived, which is then used to develop a branch-and-bound algorithm. Also, an efficient simple heuristic algorithm is developed to generate a near-optimal schedule. Numerical experiments are performed to evaluate the performances of the proposed branch-and-bound and the heuristic algorithm

  • Developing an interactive satellite multimedia system, such as a digital video broadcasting (DVB) return channel via satellite (RCS) system, is gaining popularity over the world To accommodate the increasing traffic demand we are motivated to investigate an alternative for improving return channel utilization We develop an efficient method for optimal packet scheduling in an interactive satellite multimedia system using hybrid CDMA/TDMA channels. We formulate the timeslot-code assignment problem as a binary integer programming (BIP) problem, where the throughput maximization is the objective, and decompose this BIP problem into two sub-problems for the purpose of solution efficiency. With this decomposition, we promote the computational efficiency in finding the optimal solution of the original BIP problem Since 2001, ETRI has been involved in a development project where we have successfully completed an initial system integration test on broadband mobile Internet access via Ku-band channels using the proposed resource allocation algorithm.

  • Evolutionary algorithm is recognized as a promising approach to solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems. When no preference information of decision makers is given, multi-objective optimization problems have been commonly used to search for diverse and good Pareto optimal solution. In this paper we propose a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on competitive coevolutionary algorithm, and demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm is designed to promote both population diversity and rapidity of convergence. To achieve this, the strategies of fitness evaluation and the operation of the Pareto set are developed. The algorithm is applied to job shop scheduling problems (JSPs). The JSPs have two objectives: minimizing makespan and minimizing earliness or tardiness. The proposed algorithm is compared with existing evolutionary algorithms in terms of solution quality and diversity. The experimental results reveal the effectiveness of our approach.

  • Disassembly scheduling is the problem or determining the ordering and disassembly schedules or used or end-of-life products while satisfying the demand or their parts or components over a certain planning horizon. To represent and optimally solve the basic case. i e ., single product type without parts commonality, an Integer programming model is suggested for the objective or minimizing the sum or purchase, setup, inventory holding, and disassembly operation costs. Then, the basic model is offended to consider the cases or single and multiple product types with parts commonality. Computational experiments done on the examples obtained from the literature show that the integer programming approach suggested in this paper works well.
