  • The light extraction technology for improving the light efficiency of OLEDs is the core technology for extracting the light inside the OLEDs to the outside. This study demonstrates a simple method to generate random nanostructures (RNSs) containing high refractive index nanoparticles to improve light extraction and viewing angle characteristics. A simple dry low-temperature process makes the nanostructured scattering layer on the polymer resin widely used in the industry. The scattering layer has the shape of randomly distributed nanorods. To control optical properties, we focused on changing the shape and density of RNSs and adjusting the concentration of high refractive index nanoparticles. As a result, the film of the present invention exhibits a perpendicular transmittance of 85% at a wavelength of 550 nm. This film was used as a scattering layer to reduce substrate mode loss and improve EL efficiency in OLEDs.

  • Metallic nanostructures have great potential for bio-chemical sensor applications due to the excitation of localized surface plasmon and its sensitive response to environmental change. Unlike the commonly explored absorption-based sensing, the optical scattering provides single particle detection scheme. For the localized surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, the metallic nanostructures with controlled shape and size have been usually fabricated on adhesion-layer pre-coated transparent glass substrates. In this study, we calculated the optical scattering properties of plasmonic Au nanodisc using a discrete dipole approximation method and analyzed the effect of adhesion layer on them. Our result also indicates that there is a trade-off between the surface plasmon damping and the capability of supporting nanostructures in determining the optimal thickness of adhesion layer. Marginal thickness of Ti adhesion layer for supporting Au nanostructures fabricated on a silica glass substrate was experimentally analyzed by an adhesion strength test using a nano-indentation technique.

  • A hydroacoustic and a close-open-close zooplankton net survey were conducted to understand the distribution characteristics of the deep scattering layer (DSL) and to estimate the density of zooplankton in the DSL, in the Uljin coastal area. The survey was carried out during March 13-14 and June 4-5, 2003 at each station for zooplankton. The vertical migration mechanisms of zooplankton are very variable to the taxa. In this study, after we grasp the vertical migration of zooplankton through the results of an echo-sounder survey, we verified the mechanisms of their vertical migration in the Uljin coastal area. Also, to estimate effectively the biomass of zooplankton, we researched the acoustic scattering strength according to the species. On the basis of these results, we devised a method for estimating zooplankton biomass through comparing net and echo-soundings. We obtained the results as a follows; 1) According to the examination of collections from the net sampling, in March, 2003, Euphausia pacifica comprised $38\%$ of zooplanktons inhabiting the sound scattering layer, while copepods, chaetognaths, and amphipods accounted for $29\%,\;23\%\;and\;10\%$, respectively. And in June, 2003, the ratio of E. pacifica was $51\%$, copepods $43\%$, and the others comprised $6\%$. In both March and June E. pacifica showed dominance among the species of zooplankton. 2) The analysis of vertical distribution through acoustic data in the scattering layer was more apparent in June (spring/summer) of 2003, than in March (winter/spring) of that year. The vertical migration of zooplankton peaked around sunrise and sunset in both March and June. 3) As for the sound scattering layer, it distributed in the open sea in March, and in the inland sea in June. Therefore it is suggested that some zooplankton species such as E. pacifica performed ontogenic horizontal migration througth the spring and early summer.

  • A simple emission model applicable for low scattering (scattering << absorption) anisotropic layer is developed and applied to the interpretation of measurements of microwave emission from row crops. The vegetation layer of row crops is modeled as a random slab embedded with small spheroid with major axis aligend paralel to the crop-row direction. The total emission is given in a simple algebraic form based on the zero-order radiative transfer theory. The single scattering albedo for spheroid and its polarimetric phase function are presented. The effects of layer azimuthal dependence on emission are accounted for by using an anisotropic albedo in the zero-order transfer theory. The developed emission theory favorably compares with the brightness temperature measured over soybeans canopy.

  • $TiO_2$ hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) and their light scattering effect which influences on the photoelectric conversion efficiency of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) were investigated. When only HNPs were employed in DSSC as the anode layer material, the conversion efficiency (e.g., 0.96%) was the lowest, possibly due to scattering loss of incident light. However, DSSC fabricated by using HNPs as a scattering overlayer on the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (P-25), showed higher conversion efficiency (4.02%) than that without using HNPs (3.36%).

  • The scattering property of TMz illuminated a elliptic dielectric cylinders with arbitrary cross section are analyzed by the boundary element techniques. The boundary element equations are for- mulated via Maxwell's equations, weighted residual of Green's theorem, and the boundary conditions. The unknown surface fields on the boundaries are then calculated by the boundary element integral equations. Once the surface fields are found, the scattered fields in far-zone and scattering widths (SW) are readily determined. To show the validity and usefulness of this formulation, computations are compared with those obtained using analytical method and one layer circular cylinder. As exten- sion to arbitrary cross-sectioned cylinders, plane wave scattering from a elliptic dielectric cylinders are numerically analyzed. A general computer program has been developed using the quadratic ele- ments(Higher order borndary elements) and the Gaussian quadrature.

  • In this study, optical simulation was used to compare three optical structures that could be applied to the typical organic light-emitting diode to increase the outcoupling efficiency. These were spherical scattering particles (treated as Mie scatterers) embedded in the glass substrate, microlenses formed on the glass substrate, and a diffusing layer (DL) with a Gaussian scattering distribution function inserted between the indium tin oxide (ITO) and the glass substrate. It was found that the application of microlens array and that of scattering particles in the glass substrate exhibited similar enhancements in the outcoupling efficiency when the density and the refractive index of the scattering particles were optimized. The DL located at the interface between the glass and the ITO further enhanced the efficiency because it could further extract the trapped light in the waveguide mode. The appropriate combination of these three structures increased the outcoupling efficiency to about 42%, which is much greater than the typical values of 15-20% when there is no optical structure for light extraction.

  • This Paper describes the Raman scattering characteristics of polycrystalline (Poly) 3C-SiC thin films, in which they were deposited on AlN buffer layer by APCVD using hexamethyldisilane (MHDS) and carrier gases (Ar+$H_2$). When the Raman spectra of SiC films deposited on the AlN layer of before and after annealing were worked according to growth temperature, D and G bands of graphite were measured. It can be explained that poly 3C-SiC films admixe with nanoparticle graphite and its C/Si rate is higher than ($C/Si\;{\approx}\;3$) that of the conventional SiC, which has no D and G bands related to graphite. From the Raman shifts of 3C-SiC films deposited at $1180^{\circ}C$ on the AlN layer of after annealing, the biaxial stress of poly 3C-SiC films was obtained as 896 MPa.

  • Theoretically, the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are high efficiency solar cells. However DSSCs have low power conversion efficiency (PCE) than silicon based solar cells. In this study, we use the phosphor materials, such as $Y_2O_3:Eu$ (Red), $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ (Green), $BaMgAl_{14}O_{23}:Eu$ (Blue), to enhance the PCE of DSSCs. Three phosphors were prepared and used as an effective scattering layer on the transparent $TiO_2$ with doctor blade method. We confirmed that the three scattering layers improve the PCE and Jsc due to the light harvesting enhancement via increased the scattering and absorbance in visible range. Under the sun illumination AM 1.5 conditions, the PCE of the mesoporous $TiO_2$ based DSSCs is 5.18 %. The PCE of the DSSCs with Y2O3:Eu, $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn$ and $BaMgAl_{14}O_{23}:Eu$ as scattering layer were enhanced to 5.66 %, 5.72% and 5.82%, respectably. In order to compare the optical properties change, DSSCs were measured by EQE, reflectance and PCE. At the same time, FE-SEM and XRD were used to confirm the structural changes of each layer.
