This manuscript introduces a new damping device which is composed of a water tank and a pendulum. The new damping device can be tuned to multiple frequencies. In addition, it has a higher energy dissipation capacity when compared with the conventional Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs). In order to evaluate the efficiency of this new damping device a series of free vibration and forced vibration tests were conducted on a scaled down single-story one-bay steel frame. Two different configurations were studied for the mass of the pendulum that included a completely and a partially submerged mass. It was observed that the completely submerged configuration led to 44% higher damping ratio when compared with the conventional TLD. In addition, the completely submerged configuration reduced the peak displacement response of the structure 1.6 times more than the conventional TLD. The peak acceleration response of the structure equipped with the new damping device was reduced twice more than the conventional TLD. It was also found that, when the excitation frequency is lower than the resonance frequency, the conventional TLD performs better than the partially submerged configuration of the new damping device.

This paper presents a study on the radiation characteristics of low-VHF band electrically small antenna for direction finding. Firstly, it is simulated the antenna for mounting on flat ground and tank model(in 40MHz), and measured for mounting 1/10 scaled model(in 400 MHz). In case of flat ground feed at ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$(xz-plane), yz-plane $E_{\phi}$ (H-plane) and xz-plane $E_{\theta}$ (E-plane) radiation patterns are hemispheric omni-direction due to effect of narrow ground side. Then, in case of tank model, it is shown equally in case of the flat ground, yz-plane $E_{\phi}$ (H-plane) and xz-plane $E_{\theta}$ (E-plane) radiation patterns are hemispheric omni-direction nearly without effect of mounting position. Therefore, the suggested electrically small antenna for direction finding, in case of mounting on ground narrow side xz-plane(E-plane), is shown more stable radiation patterns as direction finding antenna.

This paper provides a practical scaling method to solve an old problem for scaling and developing the speed and resistance of a model to full-scale submarine in fully submerged underwater test. In every experimental test in towing tank, water tunnel and wind tunnel, in the first step, the speed of a model should be scaled to the full-scale vessel (ship or submarine). In the second step, the obtained resistance of the model should be developed. For submarine, there are two modes of movement: surface and submerged mode. There is no matter in surface mode because, according to Froude's law, the ratio of speed of the model to the full-scale vessel is proportional to the square root of lengths (length of the model on the length of the vessel). This leads to a reasonable speed and is not so much for the model that is applicable in the laboratory. The main problem is in submerged mode (fully submerged) that there isn't surface wave effect and therefore, Froude's law couldn't be used. Reynold's similarity is actually impossible to implement because it leads to very high speeds of the model that is impossible in a laboratory and inside the water. According to Reynold's similarity, the ratio of speed of the model to the full-scale vessel is proportional to the ratio of the full-scale length to the model length that leads to a too high speed. This paper proves that there is no need for exact Reynold's similarity because after a special Reynolds, resistance coefficient remains constant. Therefore, there is not compulsion for high speeds of the model. For proving this finding, three groups of results are presented: two cases are based on CFD method, and one case is based on the model test in towing tank. All these three results are presented for three different shapes that can show; this finding is independent of the shapes and geometries. For CFD method, Flow Vision software has been used.
In an effort to determine the combined effects of major parameters of heat exchanger tubes on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer in the scaled in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST), a total of 1,966 data for q'quot; versus ${\Delta}T$ has been obtained using various combinations of tube diameters, surface roughness, and tube orientations. The experimental results show that (1) increased surface roughness enhances heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e.,enhanced heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e., enhanced heat transfer due to liquid agitation by bubbles generated and reduced heat transfer by the formation of large vapor slugs and bubble coalescence are different in two regions of low heat fluxes (q'quot; $\leq$50kW/$m^2)$ and high heat fluxes (q'quot; $\geq$50kW/$m^2)$ depending on the orientation of tubes and the degree of surface roughness, and (3) the heat transfer rate decreases as the tube diameter is increased for both horizontal and vertical tubes, but the effect of tube diameter on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for vertical tubes is greater than that for horizontal tubes. Two empirical heat transfer correlations for q'quot;, one for horizontal tubes and the other for vertical tubes, are obtained in terms of surface roughness $({\varepsilon})$ and tube diameter (D). In addition, a simple empirical correlation for nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient $(h_b)$ is obtained as a function of heat flux (q'quot;) only.ucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient $(h_b)$ is obtained as a function of heat flux (q'quot;) only.
For a marine bridge foundation construction, a large-circular-steel-pipe has been proposed for supporting vertical load and preventing water infiltration. However, a ship collision can adversely affect the structural stability. This paper presents a fundamental study on dynamic responses of the large-circular-steel-pipe by an impact load. In laboratory experiments, small-scaled steel pipe is installed in a soil tank. The soil height and water level are set to 23 cm and 25~70 cm, respectively. The upper part of the steel pipe is impacted using a hammer to simulate the ship collision. The dynamic responses are measured using accelerometers and strain gauges. Experimental results show that the strain decreases as the measured location is lowered. The higher frequency components appear in the impact load condition compared to the microtremor condition. However, the higher frequency components measured at the strain gauge located below the water level do not appear. For the accelerometer signal, the maximum frequency under the impact load is higher than that of the microtremor. The maximum frequency decreases as water level increases but it is larger than the maximum frequency of the microtremor. This study shows that strain gauge and accelerometer can be useful for evaluating the dynamic responses of large-circular-steel-pipes.

It is necessary to accurately evaluate the resistance performance and estimate the towing power of a tugboat for safety towing operation at actual seas. In this study, we have carried out the model tests firstly to investigate the resistance performance and flow characteristics around the tugboat in still water. The experiments are performed in infinite depth in circulation tank using 1/33.75 scaled model from 5kts to 10kts(designed speed 7kts) considering the effect of adverse and favorable current. Then the numerical calculations are executed to analyze the response amplitude operator and added resistance on tugboat due to the waves. The results obtained by the present computation are compared with the those acquired from the experiments in still water. As a result, it is noted that the added resistance become larger at head sea and higher speed conditions. We can also observe that the EHP increase 70 percent in comparison with those in still water.

A multi-static SONAR system consists of the transmitters and receivers separately in space. The active target echoes are received along the transmitter-target-receiver path and depend on the shape and aspect angle of the submerged objects at each receiver. Thus, the target echo algorithm used with a mono-static system, in which the transmitter and receiver are located at the same position, has limits in simulating the target echoes for a multi-static SONAR system. In this paper, a target echo modeling procedure for a 3D submerged object in space is described based on the Kirchhoff approximation, and the SONAR system is extended to a multi-static SONAR system. The scattered field from external structures is calculated on the visible surfaces, which is determined based on the locations of the transmitter and receiver. A series of experiments in an acoustic water tank was conducted to measure the target echoes from scaled targets with a single transmitter and 16 receivers. Finally, the numerical results were compared with experimental results and shown to be useful for simulating the target echoes/target strength in a multi-static SONAR system.
The morphology of filamentous fungi closely correlates with the productivity in submerged culture. Using itaconic acid (IA) production by Aspergillus terreus as a research model, the quantitative relationship between the growth form of A. terreus and IA production was investigated. IA fermentation was scaled up from shake flasks to a 7 L stirred tank bioreactor based on the quantitative relationship. Our results demonstrated the following: (1) Three morphologies of A. terreus were formed by changing the inoculum level and shape of the flask. (2) Investigation of the effects of the three morphologies on broth rheology and IA production revealed the higher yield of IA on dry cell weight (DCW, IA/DCW) and yield of glucose on DCW (consumed glucose/DCW) were achieved during clump growth of A. terreus. (3) By varying the $KH_2PO_4$ concentration and culture temperature, the relationships between clump diameter and IA production were established, demonstrating that the yield of IA on DCW ($R^2$ = 0.9809) and yield of glucose on DCW ($R^2$ = 0.9421) were closely correlated with clump diameter. The optimum clump diameter range for higher IA production was 0.40-0.50 mm. (4) When the clump diameter was controlled at 0.45 mm by manipulating the mechanical stress in a 7 L fermentor, the yield of IA on DCW and yield of glucose on DCW were increased by 25.1% and 16.3%, respectively. The results presented in this study provide a potential approach for further enhancement of metabolite production by filamentous fungi.

Scour is one of the leading causes of overwater bridge failures worldwide. While monitoring systems have already been implemented or are still being developed, they suffer from limitations such as high costs, inaccuracies, and low reliability, among others. Also, most sensors only measure scour depth at one location and near the pier. Thus, the objective is to design a simple, low cost, scour hole topography monitoring system that could better characterize the entire depth, shape, and size of bridge scour holes. The design is based on burying a robust, waterproofed, piezoelectric sensor strip in the streambed. When scour erodes sediments to expose the sensor, flowing water excites it to cause the generation of time-varying voltage signals. An algorithm then takes the time-domain data and maps it to the frequency-domain for identifying the sensor's resonant frequency, which is used for calculating the exposed sensor length or scour depth. Here, three different sets of tests were conducted to validate this new technique. First, a single sensor was tested in ambient air, and its exposed length was varied. Upon verifying the sensing concept, a waterproofed prototype was buried in soil and tested in a tank filled with water. Sensor performance was characterized as soil was manually eroded away, which simulated various scour depths. The results confirmed that sensor resonant frequencies decreased with increasing scour depths. Finally, a network of 11 sensors was configured to form a distributed monitoring system in the lab. Their exposed lengths were adjusted to simulate scour hole formation and evolution. Results showed promise that the proposed sensing system could be scaled up and used for bridge scour topography monitoring.

In this experiment, the cutter head was designed as the down-scaled shape from the cutter head of the Asan-3 of Hyundai Construction Company. The dredging simulation instrument was installed in the experiment water tank which has the dimension of $4.2m(L){\times}2.2m(W){\times}1.5m(H)$. The speed of all components were controlled manually through the hydraulic tool and motors to find the effective desilting condition. As the results, the experiment was conducted to find the optimate dredging cutter head operation rate. To compare the factors which effect on the dredging effectiveness, the dimensionless dredging volume ratio was introduced and it can be found the best effectiveness at 2.0 m/s suction speed, 8 cm dredging depth and 4~4.5 dimensionless dredging volume ratio. Therefore, in order to take the best effectiveness these 3 components factors should be adequately considered.
