  • When a saturated clay is sampled from a borehole in an undisturbed manner, the exerted negative pore water pressure restricts the volume expansion. The vertical and horizontal stresses to which the clay was subjected in the ground are smaller and larger than this isotropically confining stress equivalent to the mean principal stress in the ground, respectively. Therefore the sample expands vertically and shrinks laterally under an undrained condition. In the ordinary consolidation test, the sample thus deformed is trimmed to fit the inside of the consolidometer ring. Thus, the specimen generates larger consolidation displacement due to confining larger horizontal stress when in-situ effective pressure is loaded. The specimen does not reproduce the in-situ consolidation behavior, In this paper, considering sample deformation, the test specimen is made to expand laterally to fit the inside of the ring in the undrained manner when the in-situ effective pressure is loaded. And applicability of this proposed test procedure was verified; results from the conventional consolidation test procedure are also discussed.

  • This study was carried out to compare artificial soil formulated by blending calcined clay and coconut peat with perlite, then to evaluate this soil as a perlite substitute for use as an artificial planting medium. To achieve this, a determination of the physico-chemical properties and it's effect on plant growth were conducted by comparing those with large perlite grains and small grains. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The bulk density was 0.41g/㎤. This density was lower than that of field soil, but higher than that of large perlite grain(0.23g/㎤) and small grain(0.25g/㎤). The porosity, field capacity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity were 71.3%, 49.2%, and 3.8$\times$10-2cm/s, respectively. The air-permeability, water holding capacity, and drainage were better than or equal to that both large and small perlite grain. 2) It was near-neutral in reaction(pH=6.6). It had a high organic carbon content(65.8g/kg) and a low available phosphoric acid content(84.7mg/kg). It was similar to crop soil in cation exchange capacity(11.4cmol/kg). It had a low exchangeable calcium content(0.71cmol/kg), a low exchangeable magnesium content(0.68cmol/kg), a high exchangeable potassium content(2.54cmol/kg), and a high exchangeable sodium content(1.12cmol/kg). Except for the exchangeable potassium and sodium content, the chemical properties were better than or equal to both large and small grain perlite. The excessive exchangeable potassium or sodium content will inhibit plant growth. 3) In Experiment 1, the plant growth tended to be higher compared to that of large and small perlite gains. But in Experiment 2, it tended to be lower. This might be linked to the excessive exchangeable potassium or sodium content. 4) It could be considered as a renewable perlite substitute for greening of artificial soil. But, it would be necessary to leach the excessive exchangeable potassium or sodium to avoid the risk of inhibiting plant growth.

  • The effects of consolidation stress history including consolidation stress ratio, OCR and cyclic loading with drainage on the undrained shear strength of cohesive soil were investig toted. The ratio$(S_u/\sigma'_{vc})ckou/(S_U/\sigma_{vc})cuv$ was observed to increase with increasing OCR. The equation (1) in this paper by Mayne(1980) for the undrained shear strength of the overconsolidated clay and the equation (4) by Yasuhara(1994), for the postcyclic shear strength were found to be relatively well applicable in the case of Kofonsolidated. It was also suggested that the value of the critical state pore pressure parameter As in these two equations for the in situ shear strength of lightly overconsolidated clay(OCR< 3) be obtained by the standard consolidating test.

  • Shale and mudstone in Daegu-Gyungbuk area have low strength and resistance to weathering compared to other rocks. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate their strength depending on the degree of saturation and crack development. In this study, shales and mudstones were collected from several construction sites in Daegu-Gyungbuk area. Their basic material properties such as porosity, SEM, chemical component, and durability were tested. A porosity (absorptivity) of mudstone was 31% (25%), which was 6 (8) times higher than that of shale. Some mudstone was easily disintegrated with water and it consisted of highly-active clay mineral such as smectite type. These rocks were prepared by small cube specimens for unconfined compression test. An unconfined compressive strength of dry rock was compared with saturated one. Microwave oven was operated step by step to stimulate void water within a saturated rock, which resulted into high temperature and micro crack initiation within rocks. A strength of microwaved rocks was compared with operation time and crack initiation. As a result, the average unconfined compressive strength of dry and saturated shale was 62 and 33 MPa, respectively. The strength of mudstone for each condition was 11 and 4 MPa. When a rock became saturated, its strength decreased by 47% and 64% for shale and mudstone at average. In addition to saturation, a rock was in the microwave for 15 secs, its strength decreased into 49% for shale and 52% for mudstone. When a microwave oven operated up to 20 sec, a rock was crushed into several pieces and its temperature was approximately 200 degrees.

  • The triaxial compression tests and consolidation tests using NaCl solution and leachates as substitute pore (or saturated) water in samples were carried out to find out the behavior characteristics of strength, deformation and permeability coefficient of contaminated clay. Also, the chemical property analysis on the clay samples using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer were involved. The magnitudes of composition ratio were shown in the order of O, C, Si, Al, and Fe as a result of chemical composition analysis for clay samples. Besides, as the results of triaxial compression tests and consolidation tests, the shear strength, compression and permeability properties were increased with increasing in the concentration of contaminant (NaCl). It may be considered that these circumstances be caused by the changes of soil structure to flocculent structure due to the decrease in the thickness of diffuse double layer with increasing in the concentration of electrolyte. MT3D model was also using to grasp the procedures that the groundwater may be contaminated by the leachates permeated through the clay liner. The results of contaminant transport analysis showed a tendency that the predicted concentration of groundwater was higher with increasing in the initial concentration of $Cl^-$ ion and increased as a nonlinear curves with time. The transportation distance calculated by the use of regression equation between the distance from contaminant source and the concentration of $Cl^-$ ion was increased with increasing the initial concentration.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the adsorption-desorption characteristics of herbicide paraquat on clay minerals, humic materials, and soils under the laboratory conditions. Adsorption time of paraquat on clay minerals was faster than organic materials and soils. Adsorption amount on montmorillonite, 2:1 expanding-lattice clay mineral, was largest among the adsorbents tested. The adsorption capacity of paraquat was approximately 21 % of cation exchange capacity in soils, 45.1 % in kaolinite, and 80.6% in montmorillonite. Humic materials, humic acid and fulvic acid isolated from soil II, adsorbed larger amount of paraquat than kaolinite and soils. Distribution of tightly bound type of paraquat was larger in clay mineral and soils but loosely bound type was larger in humic acid and fulvic acid. In oxidized soil, the adsorption amount of paraquat was decreased to 85.1-95.5% of original soils. Distribution of unbound and loosely bound type of paraquat was decreased in oxidized soil but tightly bound type was increased. The competition cations decreased paraquat adsorption on humic materials and soils but not affected on montmorillonite. No difference was observed as the kinds of cations. In cation-saturated adsorbents, the adsorption amount was decreased largely in humic materials and soils but decreased a little in montmorillonite. The tightly bound type of paraquat in all adsorbents was not desorbed by pH variation, sonication, and cation application but loosely bound type was desorbed. However, the desorption amount was different as a kinds of adsorbents and desorption methods.

  • The needs for reproducing in situ neutral pressure, and for having fully saturated specimens and pore pressure measuring system for consoildation testing were examined in respect to pore pressure development. undisturbed specimens of a sensitive development. undisturbed specimens of a sensitive marine soft clay were tested in the ANTEUS consolidometer with the application of four different magnitudes of back pressure(0,5, 40 and $70lb/in^2$) in order to investigate the effect of back pressure on pore pressure development during consolidation test. The effect of back pressure on pore pressure development during consolidation is striking for back pressure up to $40lb/in^2$) but, above this value, no measurable effects of back pressure variations on pore pressure development are evidenced.

  • When plate anchors are embedded in soft clay, they may undergo a deformation under the pressure of sustained load. The critical depth at which the transition from a shallow to a deep anchor takes place depends on the properties of soil. Laboratory model tests were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated kaolinite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based on the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. In creep tests of kaolinite for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time.
