  • A satellite communications monitoring and control system(SCMCS) has been developed at ETRI to provide the capabilities of in-orbit test (IOT) for communications payload and communications system monitoring(CSM) for the satellite communications services.   • For the effective use of satellite communication transponder, tests for the payload system such as IOT(In-Orbit Test), RPM(Routine Payload Monitoring), CSM(Communicatios System Monitoring), and REV(Remote Earth-Station Verification) have to be conducted. Those tests are used in order to verify the condition and generic design of the satellite, to provide a database for operational calculations, and to maintain the quality of communication services. As the satellite communication system gets with wider expansion with higher complexity of operation, tests for the communication system also need more complex operation that usesophisticated computer-controlled measuring system. For and C language based measurement functions, which uses GPIB protocol and SCPI commands. But SICL requires knowledge of BASIC and C language as well as GPIB and SCPL system. This paper introduces a new language called CALSTEP-Control and Access Language for the Systems of Test Equipment and Payload. This language is designed for the operator to perform the tests for the satellite communication system without any special knowledge that is mentioned above. This language has very limited number of commands which are to be used to control the payload system and test equipments to perform IOT and CSM, and those commands are very readable and easy to understand, so an operator without any knowledge of BASIC and C programming language, or SICL and SCPI command can use it.

위성중계기용 Ku-대역 증폭기의 온도보상회로 설계 (Design of Temperature-Compensation Circuits of Ku-band Amplifiers for Satellite Payload)

  • 본 논문에서는 위성중계기용 Ku-대역 증폭기에 사용되어질 수 있는 온도보상회로에 대하여 기술하였다. 위성중계기용 증폭기에서 요구하는 온도 규격과 다양한 온도보상 방식의 장단점을 살펴본 후 위성중계기용 증폭기에 적합한 온도보상회로로서 능동 바이어스 회로, 감쇄기를 이용한 온도보상회로, ALC Loop를 이용한 온도 보상회로를 선정하여 각자의 회로를 설계하였다. 각각의 온도보상회로는 설계 결과와 일치하는 실험 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 실제 Ku-대역 위성중계기용 능동부품인 채널증폭기, 저잡음 증폭기, 중간 주파수 증폭기 등에 사용되어졌으며, 설계 규격을 만족하는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • 본 논문은 통신해양기상위성(이하 통해기위성) 위성통신시스템(Ka 대역 통신탑재체 시스템, 정지궤도 위성관제 시스템 및 위성시험지구국으로 구성)의 운용계획에 대해 기술한 논문이다. 위성통신시스템(SATCOM)을 구성하는 Ka 대역 통신탑재체, 시험지구국 및위성관제국 각각의 임무계획 및 제공서비스 종류를 기술하며, 각 시스템간의 인터페이스에 대한 구성 및 기능에 대해서도 기술한다. 특히 위성통신 시스템을 구성하는 각각의 서브시스템에 대한 운용상의 항목 및 기능을 도출하고, 그리고 운용계획을 기술하였다. 또한 통해기위성 통신잡재체를 감시 및 제어하고, 통신서비스망을 감시하기 위한 PCS(Payload Control System)의 기능정의, 구성도 및 운용계획을 제시하였다.

ENVIRONMENTAL TEST OF THE EQM PAYLOAD SYSTEM FOR THE COMMUNICATIONS AND BROADCASTING SATELLITE

  • ETRI has developed the EQM (Engineering Qualification model) payload system for the communications and broadcasting satellite (CBS) with Korean local companies. This paper describes a series of environmental tests such as vibration, thermal/thermal vacuum, and EMC tests. All the development processes including the design, implementation, integration and workmanship were verified and evaluated by these tests. The results of the functional tests and the compliance to the requirements are also presented. The technologies and heritage obtained from this development will be applied to the development of the payload system for the Korean communication satellite in the near future.

  • The SaTReC is to develop, deploy, and operate a low Earth orbiting small satellite system, KITSAT-3, carrying a remote sensing payload, a space science payload, and a data collection system. Through the development of KITSAT-3, the SaTReC is to demonstrate the small satellite system which provides highly accurate attitude control, high speed data transmission, and a unique spacecraft configuration and to provide educational opportunities to Korean space industries and research institute. The KITSAT-3 is expected to be launched in the beginning of 1997 by Chinese Long March IV as a secondary payload into about 800 km's sunsynchronous orbit.

  • Acoustic test of the payload fairing of Korea satellite launch vehicle was conducted to verify the performance of acoustic protection system installed inside the payload fairing. This paper briefly introduces the acoustic test procedures and its results. Overall 148 dB acoustic loads were exerted on the payload fairing structures which mated with the upper stage structure of the launch vehicle. In order to verify the increase of insertion loss by the acoustic protection system, two kinds of test were performed. One is conducted with acoustic protection system and the other without acoustic protection system. Internal acoustic loads as well as external ones were measured and the measured insertion losses were compared with the requirement. The results showed that the acoustic protection system increases the insertion loss by more than 6 dB above 125 Hz. They also indicated that some design modification of Helmholtz resonator array is required to increase the insertion loss at a cavity resonant frequency.

  • The MSC is a remote sensing instrument with very high performance that is to be installed on KOMPSAT2 satellite. The MSC consists of EOS (Electro-Optic Subsystem), PMU (Payload Management Unit) and PDTS (Payload Data Transmission Subsystem). PMU controls and monitors all the other payload units by sending commands and collecting telemetry. PMU is in charge of interfacing between payload system and satellite bus system. PMU gets commands from ground-station via OBC (On-Board Computer) that is a main controller of the satellite bus system and sends telemetry to the ground-station via OBC. There is a processor module, called SBC (Single Board Computer) in the PMU. The SBC is a main controller of the MSC system. The main roles of the SBC are payload mission management, command validation and execution, telemetry collection and monitoring, ancillary data handling, event reporting, power control of payload sub-units and communication with these units. Intel's 80486DX2 processor has been used for the SBC. Due to the fact that the SBC plays important roles for imaging mission execution and handles a lot of control data that is required for payload operation, it is required to make analysis of the CPU load when it is in maximum operation mode. In this paper, the analysis and measurement results of the SBC throughput in the maximum operation mode.

Drag reduction for payload fairing of satellite launch vehicle with aerospike in transonic and low supersonic speeds

  • A forward-facing aerospike attached to a payload fairing of a satellite launch vehicle significantly alters its flowfield and decreases the aerodynamic drag in transonic and low supersonic speeds. The present payload fairing is an axisymmetric configuration and consists of a blunt-nosed body along with a conical section, payload shroud, boat tail and followed by a booster. The main purpose of the present numerical simulations is to evaluate flowfield and assess the performance of aerodynamic drag coefficient with and without aerospike attached to a payload fairing of a typical satellite launch vehicle in freestream Mach number range 0.8 ≤ M ≤ 3.0 and freestream Reynolds number range 33.35 × 106/m ≤ Re ≤ 46.75 × 106/m whichincludes the maximum aerodynamic drag and maximum dynamic conditions during ascent flight trajectory of the satellite launch vehicle. A numerical simulation has been carried out to solve time-dependent compressible turbulent axisymmetric Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The closure of the system of equations is achieved using the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. The aerodynamic drag reduction mechanism is analysed employing numerical results such as velocity vector plots, density and Mach contours in conjunction with the experimental flow visualization pictures. The variations of wall pressure coefficient over the payload fairing with and without aerospike are exhibiting different kind of flowfield characteristics in the transonic and low supersonic speeds. The numerically computed results are compared with schlieren pictures, oil flow patterns and measured wall pressure distributions and exhibit good agreement between them.

Satellite-based In-situ Monitoring of Space Weather: KSEM Mission and Data Application

  • Many recent satellites have mission periods longer than 10 years; thus, satellite-based local space weather monitoring is becoming more important than ever. This article describes the instruments and data applications of the Korea Space wEather Monitor (KSEM), which is a space weather payload of the GeoKompsat-2A (GK-2A) geostationary satellite. The KSEM payload consists of energetic particle detectors, magnetometers, and a satellite charging monitor. KSEM will provide accurate measurements of the energetic particle flux and three-axis magnetic field, which are the most essential elements of space weather events, and use sensors and external data such as GOES and DSCOVR to provide five essential space weather products. The longitude of GK-2A is $128.2^{\circ}E$, while those of the GOES satellite series are $75^{\circ}W$ and $135^{\circ}W$. Multi-satellite measurements of a wide distribution of geostationary equatorial orbits by KSEM/GK-2A and other satellites will enable the development, improvement, and verification of new space weather forecasting models. KSEM employs a service-oriented magnetometer designed by ESA to reduce magnetic noise from the satellite in real time with a very short boom (1 m), which demonstrates that a satellite-based magnetometer can be made simpler and more convenient without losing any performance.
