A Study on Object Based Image Analysis Methods for Land Use and Land Cover Classification in Agricultural Areas (변화지역 탐지를 위한 시계열 KOMPSAT-2 다중분광 영상의 MAD 기반 상대복사 보정에 관한 연구)

  • It is necessary to normalize spectral image values derived from multi-temporal satellite data to a common scale in order to apply remote sensing methods for change detection, disaster mapping, crop monitoring and etc. There are two main approaches: absolute radiometric normalization and relative radiometric normalization. This study focuses on the multi-temporal satellite image processing by the use of relative radiometric normalization. Three scenes of KOMPSAT-2 imagery were processed using the Multivariate Alteration Detection(MAD) method, which has a particular advantage of selecting PIFs(Pseudo Invariant Features) automatically by canonical correlation analysis. The scenes were then applied to detect disaster areas over Sendai, Japan, which was hit by a tsunami on 11 March 2011. The case study showed that the automatic extraction of changed areas after the tsunami using relatively normalized satellite data via the MAD method was done within a high accuracy level. In addition, the relative normalization of multi-temporal satellite imagery produced better results to rapidly map disaster-affected areas with an increased confidence level.

Mapping Poverty Distribution of Urban Area using VIIRS Nighttime Light Satellite Imageries in D.I Yogyakarta, Indonesia

  • Purpose: This study aims to map the spatial distribution of poverty using nighttime light satellite images as a proxy indicator of economic activities and infrastructure distribution in D.I Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Research design, data, and methodology: This study uses official poverty statistics (National Socio-economic Survey (SUSENAS) and Poverty Database 2015) to compare satellite imagery's ability to identify poor urban areas in D.I Yogyakarta. National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), as poverty statistics at the macro level, uses expenditure to determine the poor in a region. Poverty Database 2015 (BDT 2015), as poverty statistics at the micro-level, uses asset ownership to determine the poor population in an area. Pearson correlation is used to identify the correlation among variables and construct a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model to estimate the poverty level at a granular level of 1 km x 1 km. Results: It is found that macro poverty level and moderate annual nighttime light intensity have a Pearson correlation of 74 percent. It is more significant than micro poverty, with the Pearson correlation being 49 percent in 2015. The SVR prediction model can achieve the root mean squared error (RMSE) of up to 8.48 percent on SUSENAS 2020 poverty data.Conclusion: Nighttime light satellite imagery data has potential benefits as alternative data to support regional poverty mapping, especially in urban areas. Using satellite imagery data is better at predicting regional poverty based on expenditure than asset ownership at the micro-level. Light intensity at night can better describe the use of electricity consumption for economic activities at night, which is captured in spending on electricity financing compared to asset ownership.

MiR-188-5p regulates the proliferation and differentiation of goat skeletal muscle satellite cells by targeting calcium/calmodulin dependent protein kinase II beta

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to reveal the role and regulatory mechanism of miR-188-5p in the proliferation and differentiation of goat muscle satellite cells. Methods: Goat skeletal muscle satellite cells isolated in the pre-laboratory were used as the test material. First, the expression of miR-188-5p in goat muscle tissues at different developmental stages was detected by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). In addition, miR-188-5p was transfected into goat skeletal muscle satellite cells by constructing mimics and inhibitors of miR-188-5p, respectively. The changes of differentiation marker gene expression were detected by qPCR method. Results: It was highly expressed in adult goat latissimus dorsi and leg muscles, goat fetal skeletal muscle, and at the differentiation stage of muscle satellite cells. Overexpression and interference of miR-188-5p showed that miR-188-5p inhibited the proliferation and promoted the differentiation of goat muscle satellite cells. Target gene prediction and dual luciferase assays showed that miR-188-5p could target the 3'untranslated region of the calcium/calmodulin dependent protein kinase II beta (CAMK2B) gene and inhibit luciferase activity. Further functional studies revealed that CAMK2B promoted the proliferation and inhibited the differentiation of goat muscle satellite cells, whereas si-CAMK2B restored the function of miR-188-5p inhibitor. Conclusion: These results suggest that miR-188-5p inhibits the proliferation and promotes the differentiation of goat muscle satellite cells by targeting CAMK2B. This study will provide a theoretical reference for future studies on the molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle development in goats.

  • We report the results on the investigation of the association of solar wind dynamics and the occurrence of geosynchronous relativistic electron events. This study analyzed E>2MeV electron fluxes measured by GOES 10 satellite and solar wind parameters by ACE satellite for April, 1999 to December, 2002. Most of the relativistic events during the time period are found to be accompanied by the prolonged period of quiet solar wind dynamics which is characterized as low solar wind pressure, weak interplanetary magnetic field, and fast fluctuations in IMF Bz.   • Time Delay and Integration (TDI) 기법을 사용하는 고해상도 위성 영상기에 있어서 실제 위성 운영시 발생하는 위성 고도의 순간적 변화에 대한 TDI 일치를 연구하였다. 시간에 따라 변하는 순간 고도의 특성을 분석하였고 순간 고도 변화가 TDI 불일치를 초래하여 위성 영상 기기의 성능에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. TDI 시간 지연을 조절하여 실제 위성 운영에서 순간적으로 발생하는 TDI 불일치를 보정하고 성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 가능성을 연구하였다. 본 연구 결과는 위성 영상 품질 향상에 활용될 수 있다.

  • 우리나라는 1960년대부터 산업발전과 함께, 급속한 도시화가 이루어졌다. 현재 활용 가능한 위성영상은 1975년 이후에 얻어진 영상이기 때문에 미국에서 1995년 일반에 공개된 DSI (Declassified Satellite Imagery) 영상은 1960년대 한반도의 지형정보를 제공하는 유일한 위성영상 자료이며 DSI 중 해상포가 2m 급에 이르는 CORONA 영상은 도시, 산림 환경의 변화를 탐지하는데 매우 유용하다. 본 논문에서의 과거의 한반도를 영상지도로 만들기 위해 모자이크 영상을 제작하였으며 모자이크 영상을 제작하기 위한 기하보정 방법에 대해 비교 분석하였다. 또한 최근 공개된 KH-9 영상을 기하보정하고 정확도를 분석하였다.

  • It was investigated to develop the contents for the local government for the purpose of providing various and correct information. Especially it was focused to take advantage spatial information techniques, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. The research site for this study was Muan-gun located at the south-western part of Korea and this site has very high opportunities to became the central point for the economical and tourist industry. The regional information contents for Muan-gun was developed and composed of three elements; internet related, geographic information related and satellite image related elements. These contents will make a contribution for the local government to present the regional information effectively and efficiently.

Estimation on the Total Added Value of Household Production : The Extended Concept of Production from Non-SNA (확대된 생산개념를 적용한 가계생산의 부가가치산정)

  • The purpose of this paper is to prepare a satellite account of the household sector that is reflected in the current national income account by approving the economic activities of unpaid household labor as production activity and estimating its value. The study produced three results. First, as different methods of evaluation can be useful according to different study goals or the contents of related policies, it is unreasonable to present a single result for estimating unpaid household labor. This study, therefore, presented the values of housework based on 5 methods, ranging from 124 to 150 trillion won. Second, to input the added value of household production from the fixed capital (household durable goods), this study adopted the declining balance method used in the Korea National Statistical Office. As a result, the total consumption of fixed capital was estimated at approximately 18.8 trillion won. Third, the total added value of unpaid household labor was estimated to range from 143 to 169 trillion wens. The amount is a production value excluded from the SNA which needs to be formed as a separate household satellite account. The ratio of this total value added was 30-35.4 percents to the 1999 GDP in Korea(477 trillion wens).

Application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for Bias Correction of Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs) in the Amazon River Basin

  • The Amazon River basin is one of the largest basins in the world, and its ecosystem is vital for biodiversity, hydrology, and climate regulation. Thus, understanding the hydrometeorological process is essential to the maintenance of the Amazon River basin. However, it is still tricky to monitor the Amazon River basin because of its size and the low density of the monitoring gauge network. To solve those issues, remote sensing products have been largely used. Yet, those products have some limitations. Therefore, this study aims to do bias corrections to improve the accuracy of Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs) in the Amazon River basin. We use 331 rainfall stations for the observed data and two daily satellite precipitation gridded datasets (CHIRPS, TRMM). Due to the limitation of the observed data, the period of analysis was set from 1st January 1990 to 31st December 2010. The observed data were interpolated to have the same resolution as the SPPs data using the IDW method. For bias correction, we use convolution neural networks (CNN) combined with an autoencoder architecture (ConvAE). To evaluate the bias correction performance, we used some statistical indicators such as NSE, RMSE, and MAD. Hence, those results can increase the quality of precipitation data in the Amazon River basin, improving its monitoring and management.
