In reclaimed loose sandy layer with dredged soil, liquefaction by the small scale earthquake coud be occurred easily. A study has been carried out to investigate the Liquefaction characteristic on Saemangeum dredged sandy soil, and compared with other results from the literature investigation. A series of undrained cyclic triaxial compression tests were performed on dredged sandy soil of Seamangeum area. The tests were performed at the three different initial relative densities(namely 30%, 50%, 70%), different cyclic stress ratio and different consolidation stress condition. The results of this study showed that cyclic stresses (${\sigma}_d$) increased linearly with increase of consolidation ratio, but the stress ratios (${\sigma}_d/2{\sigma}^{\prime}{_c}$) were almost same. The stress ratios were increased almost linearly with increase of relative density. Compared with other sandy soil, Saemangeum dredged sandy soil showed relatively weak liquifaction characteristics.
Korean soil classification system is based on the US soil taxonomy. This study aimed to understand and inform the soil taxonomy of 2010 and 2014 US soil classification systems. Ingwan series belonged to anthropogenic soil was classified to coarse loamy over sandy, mixed, mesic family of Aquic Udorthents based on the soil taxonomy of 2010 and coarse loamy over sandy, mixed, mesic family of Anthroportic Udorthents based on the soil taxonomy of 2014. An anthropogenic soil is increasing in Korea. Considering the domestic relationship depending on US soil taxonomy, it is important to be well-informed of the taxonomy and apply the updated taxonomy system properly to the domestic soil classification. This study of defining the anthropogenic soil will provide useful information on soil management and its utilization.
This paper presents an application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in settlement prediction of a foundation on sandy soil. In order to train the ANN model, a wide experimental database about settlement of foundations acquired from available literatures was collected. The data used in the ANNs model were arranged using the following five-input parameters that covered both geometrical foundation and sandy soil properties: breadth of foundation B, length to width L/B, embedment ratio Df/B, foundation net applied pressure qnet, and average SPT blow count N. The backpropagation algorithm was implemented to develop an explicit predicting formulation. The settlement results are compared with the results of previous studies. The accuracy of the proposed formula proves that the ANNs method has a huge potential for predicting the settlement of foundations on sandy soils.
A laboratory experiment was conducted to find out the denitrification rate upon the levels of nitrogen and source of organic matter in submerged sandy and sandy loam soil. The results obtained were sumarized as follows; 1. Evolution of nitrous oxide was increased at 1st and 10 days after incubation. And dinitrogen was increased at 1st and 30 days after incubation. Applications of green manure was enhanced the evolution of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) and dinitrogen ($N_2$). 2. The cumulative denitrification rates at 50 days was high in Gyuam sandy loam soil (O-M: 1.52%) than that of Hamchang sandy soil (O-M: 3.81%). On the other hand, the cumulative emission of dinitrogen was high in Gyuam sandy loam soil while nitrous oxide was high in Hamchang sandy soil. The total mount of denitrification rate was high in order of green manure > rice straw > compost > control soil. 3. Increases of fertilizer nitrogen was enhanced the rate of emission of dinitrogen and nitrous oxide during the incubation time. 4. According to Michaelis-Menten kinetic equation, denitrification rates and reaction efficiency were remarkably increased by application of readily decomposable organic matter with in higher organic matter content of soil. 5. The negative relationship was observed between the evolution of dinitrogen and carbon ($CO_2+CH_4$) while the nitrous oxide with carbon was positive. 6. Under the this experiment conditions 1 mg of carbon was required for production of 4 mg N as $N_2O$ and 3 mg of N as $N_2$, respectively.
To study the effects of soil moisture and texture on characteristics of growth, content of saikosaponins and activity of antioxidative enzymes in Bupleurum falcatum L., content of saikosaponins(a, c and d) and activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and peroxidase(POD) were investigated with two Bupleurum genotypes(Jangsoo and Samdo). Two Bupleurum genotypes were grown under different soil moisture(deficit, normal, surplus) and soil texture(sandy, sandy loam, loam) conditions. Among the tested soil conditions, dry weight accumulation rate of both cultivars could be ranked in the order surplus > normal > deficit soil for soil moisture and sandy > sandy loam > loam for soil texture. Under the surplus soil condition, growth retardation of Samdo cultivar was more severer than that of Jangsoo. Furthermore, content of saikosaponin a, d, and c also could be ranked in the order deficit > normal > surplus and sandy > sandy loam > loam for soil moisture and texture, respectively. Although both Jangsoo and Samdo cultivars grown under water deficit condition showed the highest POD and SOD activity, in general POD and SOD activity in both shoot and root was remarkably high in Jangsoo cultivar compared with Samdo. Saikosaponin content of root was positively correlated with POD and SOD. However, shoot and root length were negatively correlated with POD.

The analytic possibility of mobile lead contained in soil has been studied using carboxylated magnetic beads. Extraction of heavy metal was performed to contaminated soil that has been collected and supplied for tests. As experiment materials, soil sample, distilled water and magnetic beads were only used. It means that the lead was extracted under neutral condition. In this condition, only the mobile fraction of lead could be extracted by magnetic beads. The mobile lead in the soil was quickly combined with magnetic beads in the mixture process. Then, the magnetic beads were dissolved into acids after collection by external magnetic force, and the lead combined with the beads was eluted and analyzed by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (GFAAS). In the results of extraction experiments for 3 sandy soils, the efficiency using beads was similar to or higher than that of EDTA (Ethylendiamintetraacetic acid), which is normally used for analyzing mobile heavy metal concentration in soil. With this, it was shown that this method is a more accurate and simple method to analyze mobile lead when analyzing mobile heavy metal concentration in sandy soil, rather than conventional method using EDTA.
This study was focused on the investigation of the characteristics of TPH and BTEX removal in oil-contaminated sandy soil and fine soil with injection of microorganisms, nutrients, and surfactants. As the result of the experiments maintained moisture contents by 10${\sim}$20%, the TPH removal efficiency in oil-contaminated sandy soil was the highest in C-1 (microorganisms+nutrients), and the efficiency in C-2 (microorganisms+nutrients+surfactants) was higher than the efficiency in C-0(microorganisms). In 81 days, TPH removal efficiency in case of C-0, C-1 and C-2 showed 51%, 83%, 63% respectively. The results of D group with fine soil showed similar trends as C group, but the TPH removal efficiency of D group was lower than that of C group. Those of both C and D group were the highest in 1 group (microganisms+nutrients). The pH of fine soil was some lower than that of sandy soil or was similar to sandy soil. In 14 days, BTEX removal efficiency in case of C-0, C-1, C-2, D-0, D-1 and D-2 showed 99.8%, 99.4%, 96.0%, 99.5%, 99.2%, 96.3% respectively. Those of both C and D group were the highest in 0 group (microganisms).
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of soil amendment with different characteristics on plant growth, fruit yield and quality of oriental melon for continuous cropping under protected cultivation. Humus layers in arable soil was disturbed because soil amendment from hillside to oriental melon field was continued to resolve problems for continuous cropping. Water potential and hardness of soil was decreased in sandy loam with lower clay contents compared with loam and silty clay. Leaf length and area, fresh and dry weight of plant at earlier growing stage were higher, but chlorophyll contents of leaves were dropped in sandy loam compared with silty clay soil. Fruit size and weight was higher in sandy loam, but soluble solid and color of fruit were increased in silty clay. Marketable and unmarketable yield and quantity of fermented fruit were the highest in sandy loam. Hardness and weight of fruit were decreased by longer storage period and soluble solids of fruit was peaked at 5 day after storage, but decreased by prolonged continued storage. Because of these results, soil characteristics of amendment to oriental melon field should be considered as an important factor for quality and yield of oriental melon.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of some soil conditioners, such as polyacrylamide(PAM), polyvinylalcohol(PVA) and Bitumen emulsion, on aggregate formation and stability, wetting angle, sorptivity and penetrability of the soil with different textures : sand, sandy loam, loam and clay loam. A pot experiment was carried out to find out the effect of treatment on the germination and growth of lettuce with three textures : sand, sandy loam and silt loam. Soil aggregates larger than 2mm in untreated soils at dry condition were naught in sand, 45% in sandy loam, 80% in loam and 90% in clay loam. Treatments of soil conditioners tended to increase the occurrence of soil aggregate larger than 2mm, which were 20~25% in sand, 55~75% sandy loam, but not affected greatly aggragate occurence in loam and clay loam. The aggregate instability was decreased by the soil conditioner treatment. The wetting angles of the soils were greatly changed by hydrophobic of Bitumen, but those were changed slightly by PVA and PAM application. The sorptivity and penetrability data indicated that the effects of different materials on these parameters differed depending upon soil texture. Application of PVA and PAM were no effect exceptive in sand. Application of Bitumen revealed that water movement was not showed in all soils. The germination rate, root weight and top plant weight of lettuce were increased in all soils by PAM treatment as compared to untreated soils. Particularly the greater effect was occurred in sand soil than in sandy loam and silt loam. PAM increased greatly the moisture content and air phase of soils.
Recently, measurement of soil moisture contents using TDR (time domain reflectometry) has been proven to be viable technique. The first empirical model proposed by Topp et al. (1980) has been widely used to determine moisture contents of soils from the TDR-measured dielectric constants. However, applicability of the model was limited to medium-textured soils. In this study, we investigate the applicability of the model to sandy-gravelly soils. Calibration experiments consisted of measurement on travel time of electromagnetic waveform along the parallel TDR rods inserted into samples and gravimetric determination of soil moisture contents. The experiments are performed for two sets of samples different in the length and each set consisted of seven different particle size distributions with various gavel contents. The calibration results show that the Topp equation overestimated the measured moisture content for a given dielectric constant by 3 to 8%. We therefore propose new empirical relationships valid for sandy-gravelly soils.
