This study was carried out to evaluate the variations of headloss rate and of specific deposit to depths with effective size of media and configuration of filter layer during algae blooming period. 0.51mm size media was disqualified because most of headloss occurred rapidly below 5cm from surface layer however 0.91mm size media acted deep filtration more than 20cm from top, as result 0.91mm sixte media filter had 2~3 times longer filtration time than 0.51mm sixte media filter, but 0.91mm size media have break-through potentiality. multi-layer filter with 1.02mm anthracite and 0.51mm sand had large deposit volume in upper layer that could longer filtration time, moreover smaller media in lower layer that could protect break-through.

Oyster shell is light weighted and its strength characteristic is similar to sand so we have reviewed to find its suitability of aggregate. Therefore we found fineness modulus and size distribution of oyster shell by grinding it with inverter cutter mill varying inverter speed and screening size. In our test, the fineness modulus has tendency of decrease in higher speed and tendency of increase in bigger diameter of screening size. 5~2.5mm, 2.5~1.2mm, 1.2~0.6mm, and below 0.6mm of oyster shell particle size could be used in further test for suitability of aggregate.
Through the ISODATA method, the micro-landform of Julpo-Bay tidal flat was classified into mudflat, mixedflat, and sandflat using Landsat TM image. Each showed an apparent differences in its topographical characteristics and grain size composition. For example, mudflats are formed with flat faces and tidal channel of dissected gully. Its characteristics of grain size analysis that the grains have less than mean grain size 4 phi. Its sorting is bad (higher than 1 S.D.), and it showed strongly positive skewness. But sandflat is topographically flat without tidal channel. It has developed with ripple marks. According to the grain size analysis of deposits, the soil is coarse size with 90% of sand and its sorting is well(lower than 1 S.D.) Also, it showed strongly negative skewness. Mixed flat is in between mudflat and sandflat in its characteristics.

In this study, mortar strength was measured by grinding oyster shell and changing the particle size distribution. For the experiment, the oyster shells were processed to a fine aggregate size of 10mm or less. In this experiment, seven particle size distribution conditions were selected and tested. Because oyster shells are different in density from sand, their volume ratios were calculated and converted to mass ratios of 1: 3. The strength test was carried out one day after the steam curing.

Unlike the shelf sand ridges moribund in motion, nearshore sand ridges are highly mobile, sensitive to changes in ocean environments, thereby becoming of particular interest with respect to morphological changes. About 5 km off the Daesan port, the Jangan Sand Ridge has been undergoing severe subsea morphological change over the past two decades. Understanding the nature of sand ridges is critical to elucidate the causes of morphological changes. In this context, this study aims at understanding the characteristics and distribution patterns of surface sediments of the ridge and its vicinity. For this purpose, 227 sediment samples were acquired using a grab-sampler, the grain sizes being analysed by the sieve-pipette method. In addition, comparison of grain sizes in sediments between 1997 and 2021 was made in order to investigate the 25-years change in sediment composition. Surface sediments along the ridge axis are fine to medium sands with 2-3 phi in mean grain size, whereas, in the trough of ridge, the sediments are composed of gravels and muddy sandy gravels with mean sizes of -2 to -6 phi. Sediments in the crest of the ridge are well-sorted with normal distribution, on the other hand, the basal sediments are poorly-sorted and positively skewed. Along the ridge crest, the sediments are negatively skewed. From 1997 to 2021, the ridge sediments became largely coarser about 0.5 phi. Such coarsening trend in mean grain size can be explained either by elimination of fine sediments during high waves in winter or elimination of fines suspended during sand mining activities in the past. Spatial distribution pattern of surface sediments shows that ca. 30 m thick of the sand ridge itself overlies the thin relict gravels. The strong asymmetry of sand ridge, the exposure of ridge base, and reworked gravel lags suggest that Jangan sand ridge is probably sediment-deficit and hence erosive in nature at present.

This study examined the effects of the coarse aggregate maximum size and grading of fine aggregates to acquire the characteristics of very low shrinkage on normal strength concrete mixed in the field. In addition, the shrinkage characteristics of concrete under construction were evaluated in accordance with the curing temperature. The compressive strength and drying shrinkage tests were performed for nine mixing factors composed of the coarse aggregate size (13, 20, and 25 mm), types of fine aggregate (see sand, crushed sand, and blended sand), and curing temperatures (5, 20, and $35^{\circ}C$). To acquire low shrinkage properties under $350{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ strain on normal strength concrete, a 25 mm maximum of coarse aggregate was available, and the grading of fine aggregate affected the shrinkage of concrete. In addition, very low shrinkage properties were acquired in the curing temperature range except cold and hot weather concrete.

We investigated the effects of environmental variations on the growth and survival rate of Stichopus japonicus to determine the optimum environmental conditions for its growth. Literature studies and a 12 month-long diver survey were carried out to understand the habitat, ecology and size of the surveyed area. Based on the collected data, we suggested optimum habitat conditions for releasing S. japonicus. Experiments on releasing S. japonicus were conducted in the breakwater of the Hwagye fishing cooperative in Hwagey-ri, Namhae-un, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. To implement the experiments, we divided the surveyed area into 4 sub-areas with different characteristics: (1) sand and silt zone; (2) artificial sea cucumber bank zone; (3) artificial rock bank zone; and (4) marine algae zone. The experiment lasted for 12 months. We released 32,000 sea cucumbers over $120m^2$ of each of the sand and silt zone, artificial rock bank zone and marine algae zone and released 6,000 sea cucumbers over $120m^2$ of the artificial sea cucumber bank zone. The average density of the released sea cucumbers from day 30 to day 360 after the releasing was conducted was the highest in the artificial sea cucumber bank zone ($23.7animal/m^2$), which was followed by artificial rock bank zone ($2.0animal/m^2$), marine algae zone ($1.9animal/m^2$) and sand and silt zone ($0.8animal/m^2$). The analysis on growth showed that the initial average weight of 2.3 g increased on day 360 after the releasing to 12.5 g in the artificial sea cucumber rank zone, 20.2 g in the sand and silt zone, 23.3 g in the artificial rock bank zone and 22.9 g in the marine algae zone. Results from the experiment along with the literature analysis suggest the following optimum habitat conditions: $10-15^{\circ}C$ water temperature; 28-34 psu salinity; 5-10 m water depth; 0.2-0.5 m/s velocity; rock, stone and muddy sand as substrate; and less than 20% mud in the substrate.
Calcareous soil is originated from marine biogenic sediments and weathering of carbonate rocks. The formation history for calcareous sediment includes complex physical, biological and chemical processes. It is preferably selected as the major fill materials for hydraulic reclamation and artificial island construction. Calcareous sands possess inter pores and complex shape are liable to be damaged at normal working stress level due to its fragile nature. Thus, the engineering properties of calcareous soil are greatly affected by its high compressibility and crushability. A series of triaxial shear tests were performed on calcareous sands derived from South China Sea under different test conditions. The effects of confining pressure, particle size, grading, compactness, drainage condition, and water content on the total amount of particle breakage for calcareous soil were symmetrically investigated. The test results showed that the crushing extent of calcareous sand with full gradation was smaller than that a single particle group under the same test condition. Large grains are cushioned by surrounding small particles and such micro-structure reduces the probability of breakage for well-graded sands. The increasing tendency of particle crushing for calcareous sand with a rise in confining pressure and compactness is confirmed. It is also evident that a rise in water content enhances the amount of particle breakage for calcareous sand. However, varying tendency of particle breakage with grain size is still controversial and requires further examination.
Mortality of clam, Meretrix lusoria was measured during the experimental cultures in different sediments compositions and in different salinities of sea water. Experimental groups maintained in silt and clay showed significant mortality, while those treated in sand and in sand-silt showed little mortality. In the groups cultured in silt and clay, young groups of approximately 2.5cm in shell length were subjected to early and high mortality (approximately eighty-five per cent in foully-one days). The larger the shell size was, the later and the lower the mortality occurred. In different salinity, the groups maintained in silt and clay showed different mortalities. It is observed that the survival rate of the shell in the sea water of low salinity was higher than that in the high salinity water. Oxygen consumption of isolated gill tissue showed a little difference between the groups maintained in silt and clay and those in sand (the control-group). Consequently, it may be stated that the mortality results mainly from the deposition of silt and clay, although the survival rate of Meretrix lusoria depends also on water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, body size ana other factors.
To investigate the effect of spatial variability on hydraulic properties of unsaturated soils, a numerical model is set up which can simulate seepage process in an unsaturated heterogeneous soil. The unsaturated heterogeneous soil is composed of matrix sand embedded with a small proportion of clay for simulating the heterogeneity. Soil-water characteristic curve and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity curve of the unsaturated soil are expressed by Van Genuchten model. Hydraulic parameters of the matrix sand are considered as random fields. Different autocorrelation lengths (ACLs) of hydraulic parameter of the matrix sand and different proportions of clay are assumed to investigate the influence of spatial variability on the equivalent hydraulic properties of the heterogeneous soil. Four model sizes are used in the numerical experiments to investigate the influence of scale effects and to determine the sizes of representative volume element (RVE) in the numerical simulations. Through a number of Monte Carlo simulations of unsaturated seepage analysis, the means and the coefficients of variations (COVs) of the equivalent hydraulic parameters of the heterogeneous soil are calculated. Simulations show that the ACL and model size has little influence on the means of the equivalent hydraulic parameters, but they have a large influence on the COVs of the equivalent hydraulic parameters. The size of an RVE is mainly affected by the ACL and the proportion of heterogeneity. The influence of spatial variability on the hydraulic parameters of the heterogeneous unsaturated soil can be used as a guidance for geotechnical reliability analysis and design related to unsaturated soils.
