  • A series of model tests was conducted to investigate the one-dimensional consolidation behavior of an improved ground where sand compaction piles(SCP) were either fully or partly installed in the model clay ground. In order to check the one-dimensional consolidation settlement and stress concentration ratios, earth pressure, pore pressure transducers and dial gauges were installed in the model clay ground. The test results revealed that the consolidation settlement of the partly penetrated SCP ground was larger than that of the fully penetrated SCP ground, and the stress concentration ratios (m) of the fully penetrated SCP ground were higher than these of the partly penetrated SCP ground. The stress concentration ratio was decreasing with the increase in the penetration depth of SCP.

  • In this study, experimental analysis was performed about lateral load capacity and behavior of laterally loaded-bored rigid piles in muti-layered soil conditions. Lateral pile load tests were performed for muti-layerd soils consisting of different relative density. Ultimated lateral load capacities were measured from lateral load-displacement curves and compared with estimated values using theoretical methods. Bending moments and unit lateral capacity distribution of surrounding piles were measured from attached strain gauges and earth pressure sensors on the pile. It was found that ultimated lateral load capacities were different from the muti-layered soil conditions, and measured values were lower than estimated values. The bending moment distributions of the pile were similar all the time. Unit lateral capacity distributions were a little different from muti-layered soil conditions, but basically similar to the distribution proposed by Prasad and Chari (1999).

  • The pile driving process may lead to ground heaving, causing additional positive skin friction to act on the piles, compromising their stability. This study proposes a new pile foundation type that can reduce positive skin friction. This was investigated by designing and constructing a pile with a hydraulic cylinder which actively responds to ground deformation. The newly proposed pile design was compared against traditional piles in multiple model tests where ground heaving was simulated. In the tests, base load and total shaft resistance were measured during ground heaving and with expansion of the hydraulic cylinder. As a result of the tests, a very small amount of expansion of the hydraulic cylinder member completely reduced the positive skin friction and increased the base load. Excessive expansion of the hydraulic cylinder, however, generates negative skin friction beyond the zero skin friction state. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the appropriate level of hydraulic cylinder expansion, taking into account the amount of ground heaving and the allowable displacement of the pile.

  • This paper presents experimental results of a series of 1-g shaking table model tests performed on end-bearing single piles and pile groups to investigate the effect of particle size on the dynamic behavior of soil-pile systems. Two soil-pile models consisting of a single-pile and a $4{\times}2$-pile group were tested twice; first using Jumoonjin sand, and second using Australian Fine sand, which has a smaller particle size. In the case of single-pile models, the lateral displacement was almost within 1% of pile diameter which corresponds to the elastic range of the pile. The back-calculated p-y curves show that the subgrade reaction of the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground was larger than that of the Australian Fine-sand-model ground at the same displacement. This phenomenon means that the stress-strain behavior of Jumoonjin sand was initially stiffer than that of Australian Fine sand. This difference was also confirmed by resonant column tests and compression triaxial tests. And the single pile p-y backbone curves of the Australian fine sand were constructed and compared with those of the Jumoonjin sand. As a result, the stiffness of the p-y backbone curves of Jumunjin sand was larger than those of Australian fine sand. Therefore, using the same p-y curves regardless of particle size can lead to inaccurate results when evaluating dynamic behavior of soil-pile system. In the case of the group-pile models, the lateral displacement was much larger than the elastic range of pile movement at the same test conditions in the single-pile models. The back-calculated p-y curves in the case of group pile models were very similar in both sands because the stiffness difference between the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground and the Australian Fine-sand-model ground was not significantly large at a large strain level, where both sands showed non-linear behavior. According to a series of single pile and group pile test results, the evaluation group pile effect using the p-multiplier can lead to inaccurate results on dynamic behavior of soil-pile system.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay wall, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has widely been applied. Improved ground is composite ground which is consisted of the sand pile-surrounding clayey soil. As caisson and upper structures are installed on SCP composite ground, the settlement is compositively occurred by elastic compression of sand compaction piles and also consolidation of the surrounding clay ground. In this study, the combined settlement model is proposed to predict the settlement of SCP composite ground in basis of elastic theory for sand compaction pile and consolidation theory for marine soft clay. Optimization technique was performed based on back-analysis so that real coded genetic algorithm was applied to estimate the parameters of the proposed settlement model. Case analysis was carried out for a domestic SCP composite ground to examine the applicability of the proposed prediction technique.

  • The SCP(sand compaction pile) method which is a vertical reinforcing technique for soft ground using a sand compaction pile has received increasing popularity in Korea. Currently, there are different methods to evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by the SCP method. However, a method that can consider the effect of the replacement ratio on the bearing capacity is not yet available. This study investigated the effect of the replacement ratio on the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by the SCP method. The study involved laboratory experiments which were conducted on a centrifuge facility. Test conditions included various ranges of replacement ratios (20, 30, and 40%), centrifuged consolidation, and loading. From the results of the study, a method which can evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground was proposed and verified using the weighted average of the replacement ratio.

  • Factors which affect the capacity and the soil plug condition of an open-ended pile can be broadly divided into three categories:i.e., pile conditions, soil conditions and penetration methods. It has been found that the relative density and the horizontal stress have much effects on the soil plug behavior than other soil conditions. Also, it has been found that the pile diameter is the most important factor among pile conditions. However, a few investigations have been performed to account for both soil conditions and pile conditions. In this paper, a number of calibration chamber tests have been conducted with three different sized open-ended model piles. The model pile was driven into siliceous sand, with varying soil conditions, to clarify coupled effects of pile diameter and soil conditions on the plug behavior, the capacity, and the load trasfer mechanixm of soil plug. The model piles are composed of two stainless steel pipes so as to measure the plug capacity, the tip resistance, and the outside skin friction. separately.

  • A significantly larger lateral load and moment are applied on a high speed railway bridge foundation than other bridge foundations. Therefore most of bridge foundations on Honam high speed railway project were designed by high strength steel pipe piles to resist lateral load and moment, which caused the increase of construction costs. In order to perform optimum design, it is important to estimate accurate lateral resistance when designing this type of structure. Lateral load tests were carried out based on the field design data with the purpose of examining the lateral behavioral characteristics of a railway bridge foundation. The standard load test method(ASTM D 3966) was used for field tests by applying twice of design load. Total four load tests were performed on high speed railway bridge foundations with strain gages installed by every 1m along piles to measure load-resistance characteristics under applied lateral loads. The back-calculated P-y curves from strain gages were compared with estimated P-y curves using theoretical methods based on geotechnical investment data. Back-calculated P-y curves from field tests for sand and clay ground conditions were presented in this paper, which are different from theoretical P-y curves. By using the research results of this study, more accurate estimations of pile design under lateral loads can be available for similar geotechnical conditions.

  • In this study, the centrifuge model tests were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio, the deformation modes of piles and the ground movement in clay deposit improved by SCP and GCP piles with changing the replacement ratio(20%, 40%, 60%) under flexible loading. Based on the results obtained, it was shown that the stresses acting on GCP was larger than those acting on SCP with the same replacement ratio. It was evaluated that the average stress concentration ratio of soft clay ground improved by GCP was slightly larger than that of SCP when the replacement ratio is 40%. Only expansion failure occurred in GCP, whereas SCP showed the expansion and shear failure simultaneously.

  • In this paper, a series of model tests were performed in laboratory to evaluate promoting consolidation of compaction pile methods for soft ground improvement. For the model tests, composite soil samples that have 10% replacement area ratio were prepared by using sand, gravel, and sandy gravel for the materials of compaction piles. After loading to each composite soil sample, the excess pore pressure dissipation and settlement were investigated. In addition, the behavior of clay mixed with each compaction pile was also monitored at the end of consolidation to evaluate clogging phenomenon. As a test result, the effects for decreasing settlement and promoting consolidation by GCP were prominent, and the mixed clay was not monitored in all of the three compaction piles.
