  • In the design of a piled raft, the axial resistance is offered by the raft and group piles acting on the same supporting ground soils. As a consequence, pile - soil - raft and pile - soil interactions, occurring by stress and displacement duplication with pile and raft loading conditions, act as a key element changing resistances of the raft and group piles. In this study, a series of centrifuge model tests have been performed to compare the axial behavior of group pile and raft with that of a piled raft (having 16 component piles with an array of $4{\times}4$) in sands with different relative densities. The test results revealed that the increase of settlement resistance occurs separately with settlement by group pile - soil interactions. The axial resistance of group piles (at piled raft) increases by group pile - raft (pile cap) interactions and that of raft (at piled raft) decreases by group pile - raft (pile cap) interactions.

  • In order to investigate the influence of installation angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their lateral load capacities, model tests of lateral loads on RRP with various installation angles $0^{\circ}\;, 5^{\circ}\;, 10^{\circ}\;, 15^{\circ}\;, 20^{\circ}\;,and 25^{\circ}$ are carried out. One set of RRP consists of 12 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 6 piles. Each pile made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 350mm in length, is coated with sand until the bar has the diameter of 6.5mm. According to the test results, RRP's response is travily influenced by the displacement level. At low displacement level(1m), lateral load capacity increases as the installation angle is increased. However, the value of the optimum installation angle decreases as the displacement level is increased. In fact, it is found to be $17.5^{\circ}$ at 6mm lateral displacement. The ratios of the lateral resistances for the optimum installation angles to those for the vertical RRP decrease as the lateral displacements are increased. Thus the effect of slant ins angle of RRP is expected to be reduced at higher level of lateral displacement.

  • This study investigates the effect of thermal stress on axial load and pile settlement of PHC energy piles. A series of numerical analyses were performed by controlling major influencing parameters such as pile arrangement, pile spacing, end-bearing condition, soil condition and pile cap stiffness. It is found that the characteristics of pile-load transfer are significantly affected by seasonal operation mode (i.e., cooling and heating) throughout the year. Also, the axial load under thermal loading increases with increasing the pile spacing. The settlement of the pile in sand is larger than that in clay because of the thermal stress generated. It is also found that thermal stress highly influences on the end-bearing pile, corner pile and rigidity of pile cap.

  • Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.

  • This paper presents the investigation of the major influence factors on the degree of soil plugging for open-ended piles based on the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) numerical technique. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of soil plugging on the response of piles in various conditions. Through comparison of the results of field load tests, the CEL methodology was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurement. Additionally, the parametric studies were performed by controlling the soil conditions, soil elastic moduli, end-bearing conditions and multi layers. It was found that the degree of soil plugging for sand layers was greater than that of clay layers. Also, the degree of soil plugging increased with an increase in both the soil stiffness and length of pile embedded in the bearing layer.

  • In this study, a method using equivalent transformation for estimation of the axial load capacity of tapered piles is proposed. While preexistent methods for estimating the axial load capacity of tapered piles have been based on the effect of soil state and taper angle, a new design method is proposed considering cone resistance $q_c$ and equivalent transformation in sand. Through tapered pile simplified by using equivalent transformation, a new method fur quick and easy estimation of the axial load capacity of tapered pile is proposed for practical use. In order to verify the proposed method, calibration chamber test and field test were conducted. In calibration chamber test, comparison of estimated axial load capacity with measured one showed that the standard deviation and COV (Coefficient Of Variation) of estimated $Q_t$ is $0.05{\sim}0.121$, $0.04{\sim}0.05$ respectively. For field test, axial load capacity by proposed method shows 2.5% under-estimation in comparison with measured value. As a result, it is found that proposed method produces satisfactory predictions for tapered piles.

  • Although sand compaction pile is applied considerably for increase of hearing capacity in domestic, it is getting more necessary to develope the alternative materials because of exhaustion and increase of unit cost of sand. In this study, stress concentration ratio between crushed-stone pile and soft ground was measured and, a displacement ratio 30, 40 and 50%, variation of stress concentration ratio was analyzed. As an increase displacement ratio, the stress concentration effect of crushed-stone compaction pile doesn't increase proportionally and effect of ground improvement in case of ground was good at displacement ratio 30% or 40%. The stress concentration ratio of crushed-stone compaction pile in group piles is 1.5 times that of crushed-stone compaction pile in single pile.

  • Pile foundations have been widely used in civil engineering construction for many years. Structures subjected to large lateral loads usually have pile foundations as shallow foundations cannot sometimes support the moments on these structure. The purpose of this paper is to propose the p - multiplier factor (P$\sub$M/) based on the characteristics of behavior of laterally loaded group pile in homogeneous sand. For this, a series of model tests are performed and the composite analytical method proposed by author is used to the propose P$\sub$M/. Based on the model test results of the large number of laterally loaded group piles, p - multiplier factors for homogeneous sand are proposed by back analysis under various condition of soil density, spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, number of pile, and spacing-to-diameter of pile. P - multiplier approach provides a simple but sufficient tool for characterizing the shadowing group effects of laterally loaded group pile.

  • In this paper stability about lateral soil movement of bridge abutment constructed on the soft ground, reinforced with the sand compaction pile (SCP) and the preconsolidaton methods, was evaluated by using the centrifuge testing facility which stress conditions in field could be reconstructed in the laboratory. The layouts of model such as ground condition, sand compaction piles and abutment was determined on the basis of similitude law with the reduced scale of 1/200. Construction sequences of installing SCP, preparing reclaimed ground, preconsolidating ground and building the piled bridge abutment were reconstructed during centrifuge modelling and measurements of movement were followed in each sequence. From analyzing the results of measuring movements of the model abutment and the ground, measured lateral movement of model abutment was found to be within the allowable value so that stability of abutment against lateral sliding was secured.

  • Granular compaction piles have the load bearing capacity of the soft ground increase and have the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil reduce. The granular compaction group piles also have the consolidation of the soft ground accelerate and have the liquefaction caused by earthquake prevent using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. The Granular compaction piles are constructed by grouping it with a raft system. The confining pressure at the center of bulging failure depth is a major variable in relation to estimate for the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles. Therefore, a share of loading is determined considering the effect of load concentration ratio between the granular compaction piles and surrounding soils, and varies the magnitude of the confining pressure. In this study, method for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is proposed to apply a change of the horizontal pressure considering bulging failure depth, surcharge and loaded area. Also, the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles is evaluated on the basis of previous study on the estimation of the ultimate bearing capacity and compared with the results obtained from laboratory scale model tests. And using the result from laboratory model tests, it is studied increase effect of the bearing capacity on the granular compaction piles and variance of coefficient of consolidation for the ground.
