As the natural aggregates such as sand and clay are getting exhausted, the quantity of utilizing geosynthetics is being increased in the solid waste landfill. Especially, the waste landfills have been constructed at the gorge in the mountainous area and reclaimed land from the sea in the Korean Peninsula. Those areas are not favorable for construction of waste landfill in geotechnical engineering aspect. In this study, the frictional characteristics of geosynthetics that used in the waste landfill were estimated. Then, the studies of the behavior of geosynthetics and stability of LDCRS (Leachate Detection, Collection, and Removal System) of side slope were conducted in the waste landfill by means of the pilot test, and numerical analysis. Geocomposite which is combined type or separated type is influenced on the strain itself, and also implicated in the stress and strain of geomembrane at the lower layer. The strain on the combined type of geocomposite is about 50% smaller than that of the separated type at the side slope. The lateral displacement and settlement of top at the slope with the separated type are three times greater than that of the combined type. In the numerical analysis, discontinuous plans in between ground and geosynthetic, geosynthetic and geosynthetic, goesynthetic and waste have been modeled with the interface element. The results gave a good agreement with the field large-scale model test. The relative displacements of geosynthetics were also investigated and hence the interface modeling of liner system is appropriate for analysis of geosynthetics liner system in the waste landfill.
Six alkali-activated (AA) concrete mixes were tested to explore the significance and limitations of developing an environmental friendly concrete. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag and powder typed sodium silicate were selected as source material and an alkaline activator, respectively. The main parameter investigated was the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate to the natural sand. Workability and mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete were measured: the variation of slump with time, the rate of compressive strength development, the splitting tensile strength, the moduli of rupture and elasticity, the stress-strain relationship, the bond resistance and shrinkage strain. Test results showed that the compressive strength of lightweight AA concrete sharply decreased when the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate exceeded 30%. In particular, the increase in the discontinuous grading of lightweight aggregate resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of concrete tested. The measured properties of lightweight AA concrete were also compared, wherever possible, with the results obtained from the design equations specified in ACI 318-05 or EC 2, depending on the relevance, and the results predicted from the empirical equations proposed by Slate et al. for lightweight ordinary Portland cement concrete. The stress-strain curves of different concrete were compared with predictions obtained from the mathematical model proposed by Tasnimi. The measured mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete generally showed little agreement with the predictions obtained from these equations.

There are various methods of finishing concrete surfaces, and when considering workability, the spray method is effective, but rebound occurs. The allocation of rebound occurrence control should be adjusted according to the materials used. Thus, a basic study was conducted on multiple techniques for reducing the rebound incidence that are suitable for surface finishing materials containing a photocatalyst. A prior study derived the reduction effect and optimal mix ratio for photocatalytic performance. Based on that study, the rebound reduction was verified according to the specifications of the content and the mechanical durability characteristics of the mixed materials. Rebound, compressive strength, flexural rigidity, and table flow tests were done. The flow was fixed at 170±10 mm considering the workability of the mortar spray equipment. For the experimental variables, the rebound number was adjusted to the silica sand variables relative to the cement weight, and silica sands No. 5 and No. 7 were used. The results show the highest compression strength in the final S-1 variable, and the amount of rebound was minimized. These results were sufficiently filled with the bindings of the silica pores, which increased the binding force between the aggregates, resulting in a lower amount of rebound.
Twenty-four beam specimens were tested to examine the effect of the maximum aggregate size on the shear behavior of lightweight concrete continuous beams. The maximum aggregate size varied from 4 mm to 19 mm and shear span-to-depth ratio was 2.5 and 0.6 in each all-lightweight, sand-lightweight and normal weight concrete groups. The ratio of the normalized shear capacity of lightweight concrete beams to that of the company normal weight concrete beams was also compared with the modification factor specified in ACI 318-05 for lightweight concrete. The microphotograph showed that some unsplitted aggregates were observed in the failure planes of lightweight concrete beams, which contributed to the enhancement of the shear capacity of lightweight concrete beams. As a result, the normalized shear capacity of lightweight concrete continuous beams increased with the increase of the maximum aggregate size, though the increasing rate was lower than that of normal weight concrete continuous beams. The modification factor specified in ACI 318-05 was generally unconservative in the continuous lightweight concrete beams, showing an increase of the unconservatism with the increase of the maximum aggregate size. In addition, the conservatism of the shear provisions of ACI 318-05 was lower in lightweight concrete beams than in normal weight concrete beams.

Incheon Bridge, 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge, will be opened to the traffic in October 2009 and this will be the new landmark of the gearing up north-east Asia as well as the largest & longest bridge of Korea. Incheon Bridge is the integrated set of several special featured bridges including a magnificent cable-stayed girder bridge which has a main span of 800 m width to cross the navigation channel in and out of the Port of Incheon. Incheon Bridge is making an epoch of long-span bridge designs thanks to the fully application of the AASHTO LRFD (load & resistance factor design) to both the superstructures and the substructures. A state-of-the-art of the geotechnologies which were applied to the Incheon Bridge construction project is introduced. The most Large-diameter drilled shafts were penetrated into the bedrock to support the colossal superstructures. The bearing capacity and deformational characteristics of the foundations were verified through the world's largest static pile load test. 8 full-scale pilot piles were tested in both offshore site and onshore area prior to the commencement of constructions. Compressible load beyond 30,000 tonf pressed a single 3 m diameter foundation pile by means of bi-directional loading method including the Osterberg cell techniques. Detailed site investigation to characterize the subsurface properties had been carried out. Geotextile tubes, tied sheet pile walls, and trestles were utilized to overcome the very large tidal difference between ebb and flow at the foreshore site. 44 circular-cell type dolphins surround the piers near the navigation channel to protect the bridge against the collision with aberrant vessels. Each dolphin structure consists of the flat sheet piled wall and infilled aggregates to absorb the collision impact. Geo-centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of the dolphin in the seabed and to verify the numerical model for the design. Rip-rap embankments on the seabed are expected to prevent the scouring of the foundation. Prefabricated vertical drains, sand compaction piles, deep cement mixings, horizontal natural-fiber drains, and other subsidiary methods were used to improve the soft ground for the site of abutments, toll plazas, and access roads. Light-weight backfill using EPS blocks helps to reduce the earth pressure behind the abutment on the soft ground. Some kinds of reinforced earth like as MSE using geosynthetics were utilized for the ring wall of the abutment. Soil steel bridges made of corrugated steel plates and engineered backfills were constructed for the open-cut tunnel and the culvert. Diverse experiences of advanced designs and constructions from the Incheon Bridge project have been propagated by relevant engineers and it is strongly expected that significant achievements in geotechnical engineering through this project will contribute to the national development of the longspan bridge technologies remarkably.
For the cost down of polymer concrete, It is very important to reduce the use amount of polymer binder, which occupies most of the production cost of polymer concrete. Fly ash and atomizing reduction steel slag are spherical materials obtained from industrial by-products. Spherical atomizing reduction steel slag was manufactured using steel slag from reduction process of ladle furnace by atomizing technology. To investigate the physical properties of polymer concrete, polymer concrete specimens were prepared with the various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of atomizing steel slag. Results showed that compressive and flexural strengths of the specimens were remarkably increased with the addition amount of polymer binder and the replacement ratios of atomizing steel slag. In the hot water resistance test, compressive strength, flexural strength, bulk density and average pore diameter decreased but total pore volume and pore diameter increased. We found that polymer concrete developed in this study reduced the amount of polymer binder by 18.2% compared to the conventional product because of the remarkable improvement of workability of polymer concrete using spherical fly ash and atomizing reduction steel slag instead of calcium carbonate (filler) and river sand (fine aggregate).
Recently, recycling of the industrial by-products has been an important issue of the Yeosu bay, where large industrial complex is located. Major industrial by-products which are produced from Yeosu industrial complex area are phosphogypsum and flyash, which are about 82% and 10% of the 1.6 million tons industrial by-products. Moreover since the Yeosu industrial complex is located at seaside, phosphogypsum has been pointed as cause of serious environmental contaminant from the regional society. Therefore recycling study can't be delayed anymore. In this paper, artificial aggregate was manufactured by non-sintering process from industrial byproducts - e.g., phosphogypsum and slag - as a geotechnical drainage material. To show the feasibility of the artificial aggregate as a geotechnical drainage material, geotechnical experiments including particle size analysis, permeability test, and large scale direct shear test were carried out. Test results show that the permeability of the artificial aggregates range from $6.94{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$ to $8.86{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$, which is much larger value than those are required for the drainage material from the construction specification in Korea, and the friction angle of the artificial aggregate is as large as that of sand in water immersion conditions. From the test results, it was concluded that artificial aggregate made from industrial by-products can be used successfully as a geotechnical drainage material.

This study has its aim to judge both applicability and suitability of recycling of waste soil for the use of farmland amelioration and low-lying farmland reclamation through growth and development experiment and component analysis. As results of physical characteristic evaluation on recycling of waste soil, the classification based on unified soil classification system has investigated as SW and SP affiliation and soil classification has appeared to be a loamy sand. As results of chemical component analysis, pH has appeared to be 7.0~8.4 which is relatively higher than general soil, however, heavy metal has investigated within the 1 region's standard value of soil pollution standards. As results of germination experiment, when using it by mixing recycling soil less than 75%, there is no significant influence on germination, and in the growth and development experiment, when using horticultural bed soil which is mixed with less than 40% of recycling of waste soil, it has confirmed that there is no significance difference with general soil. In case of farmland, the growth disorder of recycling of waste soil rate no more than 40% has shown that it has relatively small influences, and in case of using it by mixing with agricultural soil, it has evaluated to require concrete review of factors which may restrict growth condition including nutrition and pH.

In this study, constant head water permeability test was adopted to evaluate self-healing performance of mortars containing inorganic healing materials which consist of blast furnace slag, sodium sulfate and anhydrite. Clinker powder and sand replaced for a part of cement and fine aggregates. On constant head water permeability test for self-healing mortars, unit water flow rate of mortar specimens were measured according to crack width and healing period. As a result of evaluating the healing performance of self-healing mortar, it was confirmed that with the initial crack width of 0.3mm, the healing rate at healing period of 28 days increased by more than 30%p compared to plain mortar, greatly improving the healing performance. Furthermore, the coefficient(α) which was estimated from the relationship between crack width and unit water flow rate was used for calculating equivalent crack width. By analyzing the correlation of healing rate and equivalent crack width, the time and initial crack width attaining healing target crack width were predicted.
This study aims to characterize the material of the finishing materials used in the No.1 stone chamber tomb of the Baekje-era tumuli in Songjeri, Naju with mineralogical, chemical, and physical analyses. The finishing material is a mixture of white lumps and fragments, presumed to be shells, that remain on the surface and between the gaps of the stone walls inside the tomb. The analysis results revealed that the main constituent mineral of the finishing material is calcite. Infrared spectroscopy showed peaks due to calcium carbonate, and thermal reaction decarbonation in the 700~800℃ range, high calcium content, and loss on ignition were confirmed. Therefore, the main material of the finishing materials was determined to be lime, and since no aggregates such as sand or gravel were found, it was identified as lime paste. The shell fragments mixed into the lime paste appear dark blue or grayish-white in color, with no original shape remaining. The surface has a layered structure, and microscopic observations revealed prismatic layers with a columnar structure and nacreous layers with a consistent orientation, suggesting that the shells are from bivalve mollusks. Additionally, X-ray imaging of the shell fragments showed holes and tunnels caused by boring marine organisms both on the surface and inside, and radiocarbon dating results confirmed that the dating of the shells was consistent with the construction period of the tomb. It is concluded that the finishing material used in Tomb No. 1 in Songje-ri, Naju, was lime paste mixed with shell fragments, and the lime was made using the shells of bivalve mollusks as the raw material.
