To examine the sample variability of zooplankton, samples were collected at two stations in the nearshore off Anhung (Chungnam, Korea), using a NORPAC net (76 Cm diameter, 0.333 mm mesh size) for two days, April 5 and 6, 1989. The net was towed vertically to eliminate the source of variation due to vertical migration. During the period of 6 hours, triplicate sampling was done every one or two hour at each station. Species composition and abundances at two stations were not so different, but the abundances at each station varied greatly with respect to sampling time. Greater abundance at one sampling time ranged 2.3-8.7 times of smaller abundance at another sampling time. At the level of ${\alpha}=0.05$, however, mean abundances of different sampling time did not differ significantly from each other due to the large variance. It was believed that the large variance was caused by the time dependent effect of patchiness of which parameters were varied with time because of sea water movement. From the variation within the triplicate samples, it was considered that the abundance data obtained from single tow were not significantly different from the data in the range of 50-200% of those from single tow. From these results, the necessity for the replicate and time dependent sampling was indicated. In the nearshore like the sampling site of this study, it seemed to be better to reduce the number of stations for the replicate and time dependent sampling though the proper sampling scheme was to be decided based on the goal of the study.
In general, $CH_4$ concentrations generated in combustion facilities are known to be ppm units. In most cases, $CH_4$ samples are collected in Tedlar bags and transported to laboratories for analysis. Considering this fact, in the present study, an attempt was made to find out how long samples can be stored in cases where they are kept in bags and transported as a preliminary study for sampling. According to the results of the experiment using simulated gases (1 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm) in Tedlar bag, $CH_4$ was safe up to 240 hr which is the full time. In the case of simulated gases are containing 4 kind gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $N_2O$). Field samples (samples of obtained by collecting combustion facilities' exhaust gases) are known to contain highly reactive substances (for example NOx, SOx, and VOCs) and may affect each other. In the present study, one site sample was secured from each of a bituminous coal combustion facility and an LNG combustion facility and whether the concentrations of $CH_4$ gas would change over time (24 hr, 96 hr, 144 hr, 192 hr) was checked. Since site samples could not be analyzed on the day of collection, an experiment was started 24 hr after the time point of sampling to analyze the samples. As with the results of analysis of the simulated gas (240 hr), the results of analysis using the site sample indicated that it could be stored for the full study period 192 hr. Therefore, it was judged that if 192 hr would be taken after sampling before the sample would be analyzed, the concentration value should be reliable.
A practical statistical approach that can be used to model various sources of uncertainty systematically is presented in the context of reliability analysis of slope stability. New expressions for probabilistic characterization of soil properties incorporate sampling and measurement errors, as well as spatial variability and its reduced variance due to spatial averaging. The stochastic nature of seismic loading is studied by generating a large series of hazard-compatible artificial motions, and by using them in subsequent response analyses. The analyses indicate that in a seismically less active region such as the Korean Peninsular, a moderate variability in soil properties has an effect as large as the characterization of earthquake hazard on the computed risk of slope failure and excessive slope deformations.

For situations where there are several markets for a product with different profit/cost structures, an economic variables sampling plan is developed for determining the market to ship the lots to. It is assumed that the quality characteristic X is normally distributed with known variability and unknown mean having a normal prior distribution. Profit models are constructed which involve four profit/cost components ; profit from a conforming item, inspection cost, replacement cost, and cost from an accepted nonconforming item. Methods of finding optimal sampling plan are presented and a numerical example is given.

The objective of this paper is to develop variable sampling interval multivariate control charts that can offer significant performance improvements compared to standard fixed sampling rate multivariate control charts. Most research on multivariate control charts has concentrated on the problem of monitoring the process mean, but here we consider the problem of simultaneously monitoring both the mean and variability of the process.
Water motion is one of the main drivers in morphological variability in species within de order Laminariales, and most of our current knowledge is based on subtidal populations. $Eisenia$$arborea$ is a dominant kelp species in the North Pacific, widely distributed along the Baja California Peninsula from mid intertidal down to subtidal areas. This species presents great variability in the intertidal zone but it has not been yet evaluated such variability according to wave exposure. The present work also identifies the spatial / temporal variation, particularly respect to the presence of stipes without medulla (hollow stipes) a feature common among other brown seaweeds. We evaluated the effects of wave action in morphological variation of intertidal $Eisenia$$arborea$ (Laminariales, Ochrophyta) at Punta Eugenia. The spatial and temporal variation sampling was surveyed between February, May, July, and August 2004 in the intertidal of Punta Eugenia, Baja California Sur. Our results have shown that exposed sites correlate with increased length and width of stipes as compared to more protected sites. Hollow stipes frequency changed more in association with temporal variation than with spatial heterogeneity suggesting nutrient limitation for thalli development. Our results suggest that $Eisenia$$arborea$ compensate by morphological modifications the stress of living in the intertidal zone by showing larger stipes. Hollow stipes might be are also a mechanical adaptation to increase survival in high energy environments.
This paper aims to probabilistically evaluate performance of two types of I beam to box column (IBBC) connection. With the objective of considering the variability of seismic loading demand, statistical features of the inter-story drift ratio corresponding to the second, fifth and eleventh story of a 12-story steel special moment resisting frames are extracted through incremental dynamic analysis at global collapse state. Variability of geometrical variables and material strength are also taken into account. All of these random variables are exported as inputs to a probabilistic finite element model which simulates the connection. At the end, cumulative distribution functions of local seismic demand for each component of each connection are provided using histogram sampling. Through a parametric study on probabilistic local seismic demand, the influence of some geometrical random variables on the performance of IBBC connections is demonstrated. Furthermore, the probabilistic study revealed that IBBC connection with widened flange has a better performance than the un-widened flange. Also, a design procedure is proposed for WF connections to achieve a same connection performance in different stories.
An attempt has been made to determine the optimum size of sampling unit and the number of samples for a given precision in wheat, using the data collected from the various experiments in 1979/80. It was found that the coefficients of variation for number of spikes except the case of high-ridge broadcasting by 8HP rotarized seeder are in the same order of those for yield of wheat, and the regression coefficients associated with the coefficients of variation and the size of sampling unit were significant at 1% level of type I error. A wide range of variation in the size of sampling unit was observed for different methods of seeding, indicating the proper sizes of sampling units for 40cm \times 18cm, 60cm \times 18cm, 20cm \times 5cm, 120cm \times 90cm to be 0.40$m^2$, 0.17$m^2$, , 0.11$m^2$, , 0.55$m^2$, , respectively. The variance component for the experimental error was not physically possible to estimate due probably to high variability among the sampling units. The number of the sampling units per plot for a given precision of CV=12% was estimated to be one in an experiment with 4 replicates.
In the previous section, we established a simple linear regression line by finding the slope and intercept using the least square method as: ${\hat{Y}}=30.79+0.71X$. Finding the regression line was a mathematical procedure. After that we need to evaluate the usefulness or effectiveness of the regression line, whether the regression model helps explain the variability of the dependent variable. Also, statistical inference of the regression line is required to make a conclusion at the population level, because practically, we work with a sample, which is a small part of population. Basic assumption of sampling method is simple random sampling.
We consider the problem of estimating binomial proportions in the presence of nonignorable nonresponse using the Bayesian selection approach. Inference is sampling based and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are used to perform the computations. We apply our method to study doctor visits data from the Korean National Family Income and Expenditure Survey (NFIES). The ignorable and nonignorable models are compared to Stasny's method (1991) by measuring the variability from the Metropolis-Hastings (MH) sampler. The results show that both models work very well.
