  • This experiment Was carried out under two points of view, from May 1st to the end of 1973. One was the comparative determination of the activation factor of Lead dioxide by kinds in measuring of Sulfur oxides concentration by $PbO_2$ cylinder method, and the other was the comparison that result with the record of auto analyzer. Five measuring sites were selected out of Seoul City. Three kinds of Lead dioxide made in Japan (B,C and D) were compared with Standard $PbO_2$ (A for use in Determination of Sulphur in the atmosphere, purity 99% up) made in British Institution, and monthly measuring was conducted at every sampling site. The recording by auto analyzer (Beckman Model 906-A $SO_2$ Analyzer) was conducted once or twice a month for 24 hours at each sampling site during the same period. And some significant results were obtained. 1. In comparative experiments to determine the activation degree of three kinds of Lead dioxide (B,C and D), the obtained correction factor of B reagent was 1.09, 1.16 in C and 1.30 in D against Standard $PbO_2$ (A). Therefore, it should be in need of standardization or clear statement about the reagents for use, in determination sulfur oxides by $PbO_2$ cylinder method. 2. Generally, the concentration of Sulfur dioxide by wilkins' convertion method from $SO_3$ showed about 20-30% higher than those by Auto analyzer.

  • A turbulent non-premixed ethylene flame, which was set up in a vertical wind tunnel, was examined to understand the effect of turbulent mixing on formations of soot and gaseous species in the flames. Temperature and velocity profiles were measured using uncoated thermocouples and LDV system. Gaseous samples were withdrawn by using a water cooled stainless iso-kinetic gas sampling probe. The samples for inorganic compounds and light hydrocarbons were collected with sampling bottles and were analyzed by a gas chromatography. The samples for aromatic hydrocarbons were collected on a sorbent tube and were analyzed on a GC/MS system. Some of main results were followed. CO and $CO_2$ were measured relatively in early part of flame and the concentration of CO was greater than that of $CO_2$ all over the early flame region due to the scavenging of the oxidizing species OH by soot particles. Aromatic hydrocarbons were measured at x/D=122 along the radial direction and main important species were benzene, xylene, toluene, styrene, indene, naphthalene. The peak points of these compounds occurred at r/D=0.8 apart from the center of flame, around in which the concentration of $C_2H_2$ decayed relatively rapidly from the maximum value.

  • When a part of data is unobserved the marginal likelihood of parameters given the observed data often involves analytically intractable high dimensional integral and hence it is hard to find the maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters. Simulated maximum likelihood(SML) method which estimates the marginal likelihood via Monte Carlo importance sampling and optimize the estimated marginal likelihood has been used in many applications. A key issue in SML is to find a good proposal density from which Monte Carlo samples are generated. The optimal proposal density is the conditional density of the unobserved data given the parameters and the observed data, and attempts have been given to find a good approximation to the optimal proposal density. Algorithms which adaptively improve the proposal density have been widely used due to its simplicity and efficiency. In this paper, we describe a fully adaptive algorithm which has been used by some practitioners but has not been well recognized in statistical literature, and evaluate its estimation performance and robustness via a simulation study. The simulation study shows a great improvement in the order of magnitudes in the mean squared error, compared to non-adaptive or partially adaptive SML methods. Also, it is shown that the fully adaptive SML is robust in a sense that it is insensitive to the starting points in the optimization routine.

  • The finite element method has been widely applied in the sheet metal forming process. However, the finite element method is computationally expensive and time consuming. In order to tackle this problem, surrogate modeling methods have been proposed. An artificial neural network (ANN) is one such surrogate model and has been well studied over the past decades. However, when it comes to ANN with two or more layers, so called deep neural networks (DNN), there is distinct a lack of research. We chose to use DNNs our surrogate model to predict the behavior of sheet metal in the deep drawing process. Thickness variation is selected as an output of the DNN in order to evaluate workpiece feasibility. Input variables of the DNN are radius of die, die corner and blank holder force. Finite element analysis was conducted to obtain data for surrogate model construction and testing. Sampling points were determined by full factorial, latin hyper cube and monte carlo methods. We investigated the performance of the DNN according to its structure, number of nodes and number of layers, then it was compared with a radial basis function surrogate model using various sampling methods and numbers. The results show that our DNN could be used as an efficient surrogate model for the deep drawing process.

  • This paper presents a real-time haptic rendering method for multi-contact interaction with virtual environments. Haptic systems often employ physics-based deformation models such as finite-element models and mass-spring models which demand heavy computational overhead. The haptic system can be designed to have two sampling times, T and JT, for the haptic loop and the graphic loop, respectively. A multi-rate output-estimation with an exponential forgetting factor is proposed to implement real-time haptic rendering for the haptic systems with two sampling rates. The computational burden of the output-estimation increases rapidly as the number of contact points increases. To reduce the computation of the estimation, the multi-rate output-estimation with reduced parameters is developed in this paper. Performance of the new output-estimation with reduced parameters is compared with the original output-estimation with full parameters and an exponential forgetting factor. Estimated outputs are computed from the estimated input-output model at a high rate, and trace the analytical outputs computed from the deformation model. The performance is demonstrated by simulation with a linear tensor-mass model.

  • This paper presents a response surface method(RSM) with Latin Hypercube Sampling strategy, which is employed to optimize a magnet pole shape of large scale BLDC motor to minimize the cogging torque. The proposed LHS algorithm consists of the multi-objective Pareto optimization and (1+1) evolution strategy. The algorithm is compared with the uniform sampling point method in view points of computing time and convergence. In order to verify the developed algorithm, a 6 MW BLDC motor is simulated with 4 design parameters (arc length and 3 variables for magnet) and 4 constraints for minimizing of the cogging torque. The optimization procedure has two stages; the fist is to optimize the arc length of the PM and the second is to optimize the magnet pole shape by using the proposed hybrid algorithm. At the 3rd iteration, an optimal point is obtained, and the cogging torque of the optimized shape is converged to about 14% of the initial one. It means that 3 iterations aregood enough to obtain the optimal design parameters in the program.

  • Based on the anthropometric data of Korea male adults, a head and torso simulator(HATS) is constructed to measure its head related transfer functions (HRTFs) which can be used for three dimensional (3-D) sound localization. The HRTFs binaural impulse responses, are measured in an anechoic chamber using a burst maximum length sequence (MLS) signal of 65,535 samples and 32,768 samples acquisition at the sampling rate of 75.47kHz. Also measured are the impulse responses of a driving loudspeaker and some headphones for sound reproduction to get the exact HRTF of the HATS-alone. Through a post-processing procedure, the impulse-version HRTFs at the sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz, which have filter lengths of 512 points, are finally obtained. As an application of the measured HRTFs, a 3-D sound processor for headphone reproduction has been developed. The signal intervals to be processed can be selected and each interval is manipulated to have its diretionality and distance information by using corresponding HRTF and energy control.

  • Mobile devices are becoming powerful enough to realize augmented reality (AR) application. This paper introduces two AR methods to estimate an environmental illumination distribution of a scene. In the first method, we extract the lighting direction and intensity from input images captured with a front-side camera of a mobile device, using its orientation sensor. The second method extracts shadow regions cast by three dimensional (3D) AR marker of known shape and size. Because previous methods examine per pixel shadow intensity, their performances are much affected by the number of sampling points, positions, and threshold values. By using a simple binary operation between the previously clustered shadow regions and the threshold real shadow regions, we can compute efficiently their relative area proportions according to threshold values. This area-based method can overcome point sampling problem and threshold value selection. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed methods generate natural image with multiple smooth shadows in real-time.

  • The stiffness of 6-node isotropic element is stiffer than that of 8-node isotropic element of same configuration. This phenomenon was called 'Relative Stiffness Stiffening Phenomenon'. In this paper, an equation of sampling point modification which correct this phenomenon was derived for the composite plate, as well as an equation for an isotropic plate. The relative stiffness stiffening phenomena of an isotropic plate element could be corrected by modifying Gauss sampling points in the numerical integration of stiffness matrix. This technique could also be successfully applied to the static analyses of composite plate modeled by the 3-dimensional 16-node elements. We predicted theoretical errors of stiffness versus the number of layers that result from the reduction of numerical integration order. These errors coincide very well with the actual errors of stiffness. Therefore, we can choose full integration of reduced integration based upon the permissible error criterion and the number of layers by using the thoretically predicted error.

  • Ship hulls obtained by the streamline tracing method usually have characteristically drooped keel lines at the bottom, and a flattening of these bottoms would contribute considerably in utilizing these analytically obtainable hull forms in practical usage. In this dissertation, the author deals with a study on the determination of a practical hull form by the streamline tracing method with a particular emphasis on the bottom flattening problem. Investigations are centered around the form and the terms of bottom doublet distribution. Several examples are computed by varying bottom doublet sheet systematically while the main side source distribution is kept the same. The following conclusions are obtained based on those computed results: after the strength of a bottom doublet sheet can be determined more easily and efficiently by employing the concept of a control plane. If the distance from the distributed plane of the bottom doublet sheet to the control plane is defined as the control distance, the strength of the bottom doublet sheet, the flatness of traced lines, and the increment of the beam length ratio by adding the bottom doublet sheet are all related to the control distance by linear equations near the design bottom. It is observed that a better result can be obtained by using a "line-sampling method" for ${\zeta}_K>2T/L$, and a "plane-sampling method" for ${\zeta}_K{\leq}2T/L$, provided that the check points are sampled in the range ${\xi}{\leq}0.7$.
