Is privatization of telecom operators socially desirable?

  • This paper compares long-run buy-and-hold returns of privatization initial public offerings to those of domestic stock markets of respective countries using a sample of 29 privatized telecom initial public offerings from 27 countries. The evidence indicates that the privatization IPOs significantly outperform their domestic stock markets if the returns are equally-weighted while they do not outperform the markets if value-weighted. In addition, this paper analyzes the cross-sectional determinants of long-run buy-and- hold returns of privatized telecom shares. The results indicate that the long-run performance of privatized telecom IPOs is moderately related to the proxies of policy uncertainty or systematic risk while the size of the firm and some market wide variables such as the accounting standard, origin of commercial law, and the corporate governance scheme significantly affect the stock performance of privatized telecom shares.

  • Recently, a demand of nano/micro patterned polymer for display or biochip has been rising. Then many studies have been carried out. Nano/micro-embossing is a deformation process where the workpiece materials is heated to permit easier material flow and then forced over a planar patterned tool. In this work, the hot-emboss process is performed with different forming conditions; forming temperature, load, press hold time, to get the proper condition for linear pattern fabrication on plated-type polymers (PC). Replicated pattern depth increases in proportion to the forming temperature, load and time. Reduction of the workpiece thickness increases according to press hold time. In process of time, reduction ratio of workpiece thickness decreases because of surface area increment of the workpiece and pressure decline on it.

  • We proposed a neural network based “left shoulder”detector. The auto-associative neural network was trained with the “left shoulder”patterns obtained from the Korea Composite Stock Price Index, and then tested out-of-sample with a reasonably good result. A hypothetical investment strategy based on the detector achieved a return of 132% in comparison with 39% return from a buy and hold strategy

  • A sequential procedure is proposed in order to construct one-sided confidence intervals for a normal mean with guaranteed coverage probability and ${\beta}-protection$ when the normal mean and variance are identical. First-order asymptotic properties on the sequential sample size are found. The derived results hold with uniformity in the total parameter space or its subsets.

  • Empirical studies have shown that the performance of decision tree induction usually improves when the trees are pruned. Whether these results hold in general and to what extent pruning improves the accuracy of a concept have not been investigated theoretically. This paper provides a theoretical study of pruning. We focus on a particular type of pruning and determine a bound on the error due to pruning. This is combined with PAC (Probably Approximately Correct) Learning theory to determine a sample size sufficient to guarantee a probabilistic bound on the concept error. We also discuss additional pruning rules and give an analysis for the pruning error.

  • 2개의 S/H (Sample and Hold)회로를 내장한 ADC (Analog to Digital converter)는 전동기의 3상 전류를 동시점에서 샘플링(sampling)할 수 없다. 또한 전류 센서 및 아날로그 신호처리 회로의 이득은 오차가 있다. 이러한 이유로 3상 측정 전류의 불평형 상태가 야기될 수 있으며 이 불평형은 전동기 전류제어에 영향을 미친다. 이 논문에서는 2개의 S/H 회로를 이용한 3상 전류 측정의 동기화 및 이득 오차의 보정 방법을 제안하고 컴퓨터 모의 실험을 통하여 제안된 방법을 검증하였다.

  • Microfluidic technologies hold high promise and emerge as a potential molecular tool to facilitate the progress of fundamental and applied biomedical researches by enabling miniaturization and upgrading current biological research tools. In this review, we summarize the state of the art of existing microfluidic technologies and its' application for characterizing biophysical properties of individual cells. Microfluidic devices offer significant advantages and ability to handle in integrating sample processes, minimizing sample and reagent volumes, and increased analysis speed. Therefore, we first present the basic concepts and summarize several achievements in new coupling between microfluidic devices and mass spectrometers. Secondly, we discuss the recent applications of microfluidic chips in various biological research field including cellular and molecular level. Finally, we present the current challenge of microfluidic technologies and future perspective in this study field.

  • An inexpensive, yet convenient analog storage device was constructed. Sequentially MOSFET-switched 20 sample and holds equipped with a high input impedance preamplifier were parallelly matched to the digitally controlled shift register system in variable speeds up to 3 kHz. To verify its usefulness, square wave train, sinusiodal wave and some electrochemical data, such as fast-scan voltammogram and transient current-time curves of differential pulse polarography were tested.

The Effect on Gas Adsoption Efficiency for Various Surface Characteristics (표면특성에 따른 물맺힘 특성이 가스흡착성에 미치는 영향)

  • The gas adsorption efficiency for various surfaces with three different characteristics has been reviewed. The dimethyl disulfide gas has been used to investigate characteristics of gas adsorption for different surface characteristics such as plasma treated, lacquer coated and untreated. Three different surfaces were evaluated in dry conditions initially and tested at wet surface conditions with spraying water to evaluate the gas adsorption efficiency which usually occurred at defrost cycles. The results show that the gas adsorption of the plasma treated sample has better performance than others. The lacquer coated and untreated samples showed the similar result, but the lacquer coated sample showed a slightly better performance.

Physicochemical Properties of Freeze-dried Corn Starch Sponge Matrix (동결 건조된 옥수수 전분 스펀지 매트릭스의 이화학적 특성)

  • The focus of the current study was to investigate the physicochemical properties of a corn starch-sponge matrix prepared at a low concentration below gel forming by freeze-drying. The effect of variables(starch concentration, heating temperature, and heating hold time) on the physicochemical properties of the samples was analyzed by response-surface methodology. Regression models on the properties of samples such as hardness, springiness, and water solubility index(WSI) showed high correlation coefficients(r>0.95) and significant F values, but regression models for the other properties(swelling power, apparent viscosity, reducing sugar content, and digestibility) showed them to have relatively low significance. Sample hardness of sample showed the highest value at condition of $90^{\circ}C$ and 5%, whereas springiness was at a maximum at $130^{\circ}C$ and 5%. Also, at 1% of starch concentration, mechanical properties were greatly decreased as the relative humidity increased, compared with the 3% and 5%, especially in the hardness of samples. The WSI showed an increasing trend with heating temperature regardless of starch concentration. Overall, the physicochemical properties of freeze-dried corn starch-sponge matrix were influenced much more by starch concentration and heating temperature than by heating hold time. The results of this study show that the basic properties of freeze-dried corn starch-sponge matrix can be used for the specific food applications or as a functional material for its stability.
