This study was to investigate the effects of media components on the mycelial growth of Lentinus eclodes, including C-source. N-source, Inorganic salts, and c/N ratio. Glucose and yeast extract were selected as C-source and N-source, respectively. $KH_2PO_4,\;K_2HPO_4,\;MGSO_4,\;7H_2O$ as inorganic salts were added. When glucose concentration was 30g/L and yeast extract concentration was 20g/L, indicating that C/N ratio was 1.5, the cell mass was about 9g/L.
Hypocotyl-derived callus cultures of Brassica pekinensis cv. Chungseng were grown on Murashige-Skoog medium containing NaCl, Na2SO4 and mannitol to clarify the effect of salts on callus growth, proline accumulation and water relations. Na2SO4 was more inhibitory than NaCl when survival rate, growth and fresh:dry weight ratios of established callus were measured. Fresh weight in 0.25% NaCl treatment was more than twice as increasable in comparison to the same concentration of Na2SO4 or control. Proline concentration was increased on either salt, attained at highest levels at the 5th subculture, and fluctuated as affected by both salts or mannitol. Concentrations of redeucing sugars were sharply increased after 2 or 3 times of subculture and decreased by increasing subculture. The water and osmotic potential in callus reached a maximum negative value after two weeks in culture, regardless of salt type and mannitol and tugor remained relatively constant on both salt and mannitol treatments.

This study investigated the thermodynamic and the thermal decomposition properties of high concentration nitrate salts waste water for the lagoon sludge treatment. The thermodynamic property was carried out by COACH and GEMINI II based on the composition of nitrate Salts waste water. The thermal decomposition property was carried out by TG-DTA and XRD. Ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate were decomposed at $250^{\circ}C$$730^{\circ}C$$450^{\circ}C$$Na_2O$ into stable $Na_2O$.$Al_2O_3$. The flow sheet for nitrate salts waste water treatment was proposed based on the these properties data. These will be used by the basic data of the process simulation.
In this study, an attempt was made to increase the survival rate of bifidobacteria entrapped in alginate in the gastrointestinal tract, and to investigate the potential industrial applications, for example lyophilized capsules and yogurt. First, the protective effect of various food additives on bifidobacterial survivability was determined after exposure to simulated gastric juices and bile salts. The additives used in this study were skim milk (SM), polydextrose (PD), soy fiber (SF), yeast extract (YE), chitosan (CS), $\kappa$-carageenan ($\kappa$-C) and whey, which were added at 0.6% concentration (w/v) to 3% alginate-bifidobacterial solution. In the simulated gastric juices and bile salts, the protective effect of 0.6% skim milk-3% alginate (SM-A) beads on the survival rate of bifidobacteria proved to be higher than the other additives. Second, the hydrogen ion permeation was detected through SM-A vessel without bifidobacterial cells at different SM concentrations (0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0%). There were no differences in terms of the pH decrease in SM-A vessels at 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0% (w/v) SM concentrations. The survival rate of bifidobacteria in SM-A beads would appear to be related to the SM buffering capacity against hydrogen ions and its tendency to reduce the pore size of bead. In this experiment, the survival rate of bifidobacteria entrapped in beads containing 0.6% SM showed the highest viability after exposure to simulated gastric juices for 3h, thereby indicating that 0.6% SM is the optimum concentration fir 3% alginate bead preparation. Third, the effect of SM-A beads on the freeze-drying and yogurt storage for 10 days was investigated. SM-A beads were found to be more efficient for freeze drying and yogurt storage than untrapped cells and the alginate bead. Consequently, the survival rate of bifidobacteria entrapped in SM-A beads was increased in simulated gastric juices, bile salts and probiotic products, such as lyophilized capsules and yogurt, SM-A beads can be expected to produce high value probiotic products.

The single-stranded DNA binding activity of the Escherichia coli RecA protein is crucial for homologous recombination to occur. This and other biochemical activities of ssDNA binding proteins may be affected by various factors. In this study, we analyzed the effect of $CaCl_2$, NaCl and $NH_4NO_3$ salts in combination with the pH and nucleotide cofactor effect on the ssDNA-binding activity of RecA. The studies revealed that, in addition to the inhibitory effect, these salts exert also a stimulatory effect on RecA. These effects occur only under very strict conditions, and the presence or absence and the type of nucleotide cofactor play here a major role. It was observed that in contrast to ATP, ATP${\gamma}$S prevented the inhibitory effect of NaCl and $NH_4NO_3$, even at very high salt concentration. These results indicate that ATP${\gamma}$S most likely stabilizes the structure of RecA required for DNA binding, making it resistant to high salt concentrations.

There are several types of salts that can be classified into raw salt(Chunil salt), purified salts(NaCl reagent grade) and processed salts(Bamboo salt, Purple bamboo salt using in this study) in Korea. Salts has been utilized for the food as well as for the drug in the Oriental Medicine. Purple bamboo salt(PB-salt) was made by heating up to 1300℃ nine times after putting the raw salts in the bamboo. Since salt is generally known to cause the blood pressure to elevate, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of PB-salt on an adverse reaction of the blood pressure elevation. The experiment was performed with the 2 protocols ; 1. Effect of NaCl and PB-salt administration i.v. with the different the concentration(250, 500, 750, 1000mg/kg) on a mean artery blood pressure(MAP) change. 2. Effect of 500mg/kg NaCl and PB-salt administration p.o. for 6 days on the systolic blood pressure change. The results were as follows; The results were as follows; In a short minute change of blood pressure by direct method, PB-salt adminstration did not induced the hypertension unlike NaCl adminstration. In a date change of blood pressure by indirect method, systolic blood pressure was increased about 12-18% in the NaCl administration group, whereas within 6% in the PB-salt administration group from 2 days to 5 days. These results suggest that PB-salt might have some unidentified ingredient to be changed in the course of processing, making it superior to other salts.

The development of bioenergy through biomass has gained importance due to the increasing rates of fossil fuel depletion. Biomass is important to increase the productivity of bioethanol, and production of biomass with high biomass productivity, low lignin content, and high cellulose content is also important in this regard. Inorganic salts are important in the cultivation of biomass crops for the production of biomass with desirable characteristics. In this study, the roles of various inorganic salts in biomass and bioethanol production were investigated using an in vitro tobacco culture system. The inorganic salts evaluated in this study showed dramatic effects on tobacco plant growth. For example, H2PO4 substantially improved plant growth and the root/shoot (R/S) ratio. The chemical compositions of tobacco plants grown in media after removal of various inorganic salts also showed significant differences; for example, lignin content was high after Mg2+ removal treatment and low after K+ treatment and H2PO4 removal treatment. On the other hand, NO3- and H2PO4 treatments yielded the highest cellulose content, while enzymatic hydrolysis yielded the highest glucose concentration ratio 24 h after NH4+ removal treatment. The ethanol productivity after H2PO4 removal treatment was 3.95% (w/v) 24 h after fermentation and 3.75% (w/v) after 36 h. These results can be used as the basis for producing high-quality biomass for future bioethanol production.
The increasing use of deicing salts has caused various environmental problems, including crop damage along the motorway where deicing salts are sprayed during winter. Deicing salts used on roads have been reported to negatively affect crops, but little information is known about their impact on crops. A seedling emergence assay was conducted to evaluate the effects of deicing salts on crops using oilseed rape (Brassica napus) as a model plant. We tested five chloride deicing salts consisting of NaCl, CaCl2, or MgCl2 and 1 non-chloride deicing salt (SM-3) at a range of concentrations (25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mM), and untreated control. Regardless of deicing salts, they significantly delayed and reduced seedling emergence of oilseed rape with increasing salt concentration. Non-linear regression analysis of seedling emergence with a range of salt concentrations by fitting to the log-logistic model revealed that the chloride deicing salts reduced seedling emergence more than the non-chloride deicing salt SM-3. The GR50 value, the concentration causing 50% seedling emergence, of SM-3 was 47.1 mM, while those of the chloride deicing salts ranged from 30.7 mM (PC-10) to 37.5 mM (ES-1), showing approximately 10 mM difference between non-chloride and chloride deicing salts. Our findings suggest that seedling emergence assay is a useful tool to estimate the potential damage caused by deicing salts on crops.
Effects of rheological parameters, such as shear rate, temperature, concerntration, salts on the apparent viscosity of chitosan(deacetylation degree: $84\%$, Mw: 267,000) dissolved in acetate buffer(pH 4.5) were investigated. Rheologiral properties of chitosan solution from cuticle of red snow crab (Chinonecetes japonicus) are as follows. $0.5\%$ chitosan in 0.1M acetate buffer (pH 4.5) solution showed Bingham flow having hysteresis loop. It's flow equation was $\sigma=0.757+19.6_\gamma(r^2=0.99)$. The viscosity of chitosan solution is exponentially increased with its concentration, and showed Arrhenius dependence with respect to the temperature $(10^{\circ}C-40^{\circ}C).$ When various salts were added to chitosan solution, the viscosity decreased as the concentration of counterion increased. But the type ot counterions itself does not have any significant effects on the viscosity.
Effects of various types of salts (commercial low salt, sea salt, refined salt, and bamboo salt) and concentrations (0, 3.0 and 5.0% ) on the growth of yeasts isolated from Kimchi were investigated. The isolated yeasts used in the study are as follows : Saccharomyces cerevisia, Sporobolomyces albo-rubescens, Issatchenkia orientalis Cryptococcus luteolous, Ustilago maydis, Candida humilis, Pichia onychis, Cadida nitratophila, and Pichia jadinii. The growths of the yeasts were inhibited against each salt concentration. The growths of Candida sp. isolated from the later stage of fermentation was strongly inhibited against 5% concentration of salt. On the other hand the induction phase of Issatchenkia orientalis isolated at the early stage of fermentation was the quickest among all the tested yeasts. Among the salts, bamoo salt was found to be strongest inhibitor of the growth of yeasts.
