  • Nowadays most nations around the world including Korea have experienced absolute shortages of available urban space. To solve various problems of the city, each nation constantly tends to extend the underground space. However there is a serious problem in making use of the underground space. Especially new terrorism coming into existence after 9.11 terror turns into the so-called ‘soft target’ which has something to do with public transportation facilities available to most people. Good examples are like these: poisonous gas attacks in Tokyo subway in 1995, Daegu subway station fire in 2003, serial bomb blast of London subway in 2005. In spite of being a concern on incidents related to the underground space it is inevitable to utilize the underground space and the tendency is growing. But Korea lags badly behind in foreign countries in this field and so seeking measures is urgently needed. Therefore the aim of this study is to note visible damages stemmed from the domestic and foreign underground space and propose more effective and adequate measures. Safety measures of terrorism are associated to minimize damage out of terrorism and they are as follows. In the first place, preparing protective equipment for saving a life from fire attacks and poisonous gas is needed urgently. In the second place, counterpart management on the spot and systematic security training should be established in order to minimize injury. In the third place, fire escapes must be provided for a rapid evacuation of potential unspecified individuals. In the fourth place, building up a network of related institutions is required for a systematic omnidirectional counterpart. Finally the Korean government ought to take fast and appropriate actions for the injured and bereaved family of the terror incident.

  • Purpose of this study is to analyze actual perception of security business of security workers centering on employees working within building and to improve accomplishment of works for security workers. For this, first, activities of security workers are discussed. Second, perception of employees of companies for the necessity of security workers, non-necessity of security workers, qualification requirements of security workers for improving business recognition were established as a framework of the study. Changes for recognition of security works in modern life are a little falling behind compared to unstopping economic development and diversifying job classifications. Even at present, expression of security works is still regarded as manager of facilities or apartments in the past. In other words, it is recognized as a simple change of title and names from apartment guard to security workers. Security works in the modern job classification is settling down as a professional field of facility management and as a part of various controls such as protection and security and its field is also expanding. It is a professional job with the purpose to analyze and prevent diverse criminal actions occurring in the society and also to introduce alternative measures with the role to prevent accidents to be occurred in variety in advance instead of simple working format taking a fixed guard post. Area of security works for the purpose of maximizing necessity of security works shall have equipped with deployment of professional security workers, consideration of business satisfaction of security workers, prevention education for rapidly changing safety accidents, and substantiality in the field. We expect to have more sophisticated area of security works with ceaseless efforts and with instillation of recognition of professionalism by security workers themselves.

  • Hydrogeological systems in a metrnpolitan area can be understood by analyzing the groundwater disturbing factors such as constructions and land applications, the groundwater usage for domestic and industrial purposes, and the groundwater pumpage to lower the groundwater level for the structural safety of subway and underground facilities. This study is part of the study performed to understand the groundwater system in the Seoul area and it is focusing on the hydraulic properties. Groundwater well inventory, barometric efficiency measurements, pumping and slug tests, and long-term groundwater monitoring have been perfonrmed during the last 2 years. The relations between Han River and the groundwater around the river also have been observed. These observations and test data, together with the information on soil distribution, geology, and logging data are used to construct a database and GIS(Geographic Information System) presentation system using ARC/INFO. Barometric efficiencies appeared to have no special trends associated with well depths, which maeans that the degree of confinement of the crystaline rock aquifer of the Seoul area is distributed locally depending on the developrnent of fractures. Hydraulic conductivities exponentialiy decrease with well depth. The stage of Han River fluctuates according to the tidal movement of nearby seawater but the tidal effects attenuate due to the underwater dams. Groundwater levels in the Seoul area seem to have declined for the last two years, but it is not certain that the declination represents the long-term trend.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigated the ELF-MF emission level of various environments such as 258 facilities near located to high voltage transmission lines and 120 high voltage transmission lines, 17 underground cable lines. In addition, ELF-MF reduction rate according to separation distance was calculated by using simulations. An appropriate separation distance showing below 4mG was at least 70m. In the case of the appropriate separation distance for 120 high voltage transmission lines, 154kV required 20m of separation distance and 345kV required 60m of separation distance. The simulation results showed that the appropriate separation distance showing below 4mG was 40m and 60m for overhead 154kV and 345kV respectively. To adjust the worst conditions considering the aspects of environmental impact assessment study and the electric power currents that will increase in the future, the appropriate minimum separation distance for HVTL is judged to be above 70m in this study. Thus, there is a need to establish the greenbelt or buffer zone within 70m so as to create an environment in which the receptors are not exposed and thereby eliminate the risk factors of ELF-MF against humans.

  • In order to provide fundamental data for development of controlled environment facilities in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) cultivation, field survey and analysis of structural and environmental engineering characteristics on the shading structures in ginseng fields (the ginseng houses) were carried out. In this study shading structures for ginseng cultivation were classified according to their structural materials, connection types, and detailed structures. That is they were classified into wood or steel frames, single or multi spans, and frame or cable types. As a result of the investigation, standardization of structural materials, fabrication and construction methods arc required. And it was considered that a reinforced design and a countermeasure for heavy snow are the most important matters for structural improvement. In parts of the environmental management, researches for setting up the irrigation standard are required in the first place. And it was investigated that an installation of the shading structures is a work being the most hard, taking a lot of time, and having need for automation. So controlled environment ginseng houses, with a low cost, a structural safety and a satisfactory workability, should be developed.

  • A huge amount of de-icing agent is sprayed during winter to promote traffic safety in cold regions, and the quantity of de-icing agent sprayed has increased each year. The main ingredients in commonly used de-icing agents are chlorides, such as calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) and sodium chloride(NaCl). While calcium chloride is mostly used in Korea and sodium chloride is usually used in the U.S. and Japan, all de-icing agents include chloride ions. The chlorides included in sprayed calcium chloride-based de-icing agents have severe adverse effects, including the corrosion of reinforcing steels through salt damage by infiltrating into road structures, reduced structural performance of pavement or damage to bridge structures, and surface scaling, in combination with freezing damage in winter, as well as water pollution. In addition, the deterioration of paved concrete road surface that occurs after the use of calcium chloride-based de-icing agent accelerates the development of visual problems with traffic structures. Therefore, the present study was performed to prepare an environment-friendly liquid de-icing agent through a reaction between waste organic acids and calcium-based by-products, which are industrial by-products, and to analyze the properties of the de-icing agent in order to evaluate its applicability to road facilities.

  • Recently, as the size of transportation vessels has increased, there is a growing need for securing the front-water depths of existing port facilities. The method of deepening front-water depth is securing the depth of the port facility, and it is reinforced by grouting after excavating the rubble-mound to the required depth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reinforcing performance and filling performance of thixotropic grout as a grouting material for reinforcing rubble-mound. Compressive strength tests were carried out for two types of thixotropic grout, and 5 specimens with a diameter of 400 mm and a height of 530 mm were manufactured and evaluated for filling performance. The required strength of reinforced rubble-mound required to ensure the safety of the structure is 6 MPa. All the thixotropic grouts used in this study were found to satisfy the required strength over 9 MPa at 7 days of age. As a result of visual observation of filling state of the filling performance test specimens, it was confirmed that the thixotropic grout was well filled up to the desired fillet height.

  • This study aims to analyze the satisfaction of seniors living in Cheonan City downtown as to their residential environment. Also, this study intends to identify which factors should be improved first to make downtown a favorable residential area. To that end, 'social indicators of Chungnam' was used. The collected data was analyzed through a statistical analysis method using ANOVA (analysis of variance) and a cluster analysis. It led to the following findings. First, 6.9% of the elderly residents expressed their wish to move from their downtown residence. Thus, the majority of the residents do not want to move. Second, the satisfaction of the elderly residents in their downtown residence scored 6.09. The score is higher than those of other regions. Thus, it is highly possible to develop downtown into a senior-friendly area. Third, as for satisfaction in downtown residence, it was higher among the following groups: men; those with high school or higher level of education; those earning at least a million won a month; family of one generation. Fourth, satisfaction in the following factors was relatively low: culture and education; interaction with neighbors and trust in them; car accidents. Thus, those factors should be improved for downtown residents. Above all, community-faced facilities should be expanded to increase exchanges with neighbors and trust in them. To attract women dissatisfied with downtown residence. it is imperative to increase daily safety by reducing car accidents and crime.
