  • Comparative insecticidal efficiency between compounded pyrethroids and its preparations cooperated with several synergists was studied. As main components, Group A contained Permethrine.Phthalthrine, Group B contained Permethrine.Furameth rine and Group C contained Phthalthrine.Dichlorvos. As synergists Piperonyl Butoxide (P.B.O.), N-Octylbicycloheptene dicarboximide (MGK-264), Octachlorodipropylether (8-421) was cooperated in each group. These preparations was treated to either Blattella G. or Musca D. for comparing about insecticidal efficiency[Knock-down rate ($KT_{50},\;KT_{90}$) and cumulative mortaility(percent/hrs)]. When the synergists was added to each Group, the insecticidal efficiency was improved. The most potent synergists was P.B.O. and the potency was decreased in the rank order of S-421>MGK-264. The more the concentration of synergists was increased, the more the insecticidal efficiency was improved. The rank order was $1:5{\geq}1:4>1.3$ in all three groups. The mortality (percent) according to time was similar to either $KT_{50}\;or\;KT_{90}$. Knock-down rate was appropriate parameter for the indicator about potency.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate thermal properties of lab gowns developed from the point of safety and work efficiency. We evaluated thermal and subjective responses of subjects wearing functional new lab gowns (Type B, C, D) and a popular lab gown on the market (Type A). Type B was a new lab gown made of woven fabric with functional cuffs. Type C was a new apron made of woven fabric with arm protectors. Type D was a new lab gown made of non-woven material with functional cuffs and openings around the armpits. Temperature in the climatic chamber was set at 19$^{\circ}$C as an indoor temperature in winter and at 24$^{\circ}$C in summer. There were no significant differences in rectal temperature and heart rate among four types of gowns and between two air temperatures for 120 min. Mean skin temperature was much higher in the type A and B than in He type C and D (p .05). In the 19$^{\circ}$C air, clothing microclimate temperature on the back was the highest in the type B and was the lowest in the type C (p .05). Clothing microclimate humidity was not significant differences among gowns. In subjective .esponses, subjects perceived that Type B was the warmest gown in the 19$^{\circ}$C and the hottest and more humid in the 24$^{\circ}$C than other gowns. Inversely, type C was the coolest gown among four gowns. Both in the 19$^{\circ}$C and in the 24$^{\circ}$C, the Type D had gained most responses of being comfortable. In conclusion, the temperature difference of 5$^{\circ}$C was more of an influencing factor than the difference from four types of lab gowns. Secondly, we recommend the manufacturers to make lab gowns with functional cuffs for safety purposes. Thirdly, the spread of the type of apron with arm protector will contribute to increase of the frequency of wearing in summer. Fourthly, it is necessary to study continuously about lab gowns with non-woven materials for researchers exposed to toxic chemical and biological materials.

  • In this study, alarm sound generated as a priority alert system propagation through an elevator shaft in apartment buildings were simulated using room acoustic simulation software. The simulations were conducted on three kinds of elevator hall plan with a different number of elevators and placement. First, the elevator shaft without sound absorption material was simulated as a condition of the present. When the distance from the alarm sound generating floor became farther, alarm sound level was decreased. However, the alarm sound level three-floor distance was about 54 dB(A)~56 dB(A) which were louder than a background sound level of typical apartment buildings. Sound absorption material placement proposed by previous studies were simulated and the alarm sound levels were decreased about 12 dB~16 dB. These levels were similar or lower than the background level of apartment buildings. From these results, it can be concluded that placing sound absorption material on the surface of the elevator shaft wall can be one of the methods to control the alarm sound as regulated in NFSC.

  • Objectives. This study was carried out to analyze the hearingthreshold levels and relating factors of 1,048 workers with noiseinduced hearing loss$(D_1)$. Methods. We analyzed the hearing-threshold levels and relating factors of 1,048 workers with noise-induced hearing loss$(D_1)$ examined by the summary reports of specific health examination results of industries and personal reports of specific health examination results reported by 58 specific health examination institutes and 8 secondary pneumoconiosis examination institutes in 1996. Results. Among 1,048 workers at 510 workplaces, male workers were 1,009 (96.3%) and female workers were 39 (3.7%). The mean ages of workers initially exposed to noise and at present were 28.7 and 47.2, respectively. The duration of total exposure was 16.5 years. Average hearing-threshold levels analyzed by three-divided classification of the study subjects were 43.7dB(Lt) and 42.6dB(Rt). Those analyzed by six-divided classification were 50.5dB(Lt) and 48.6d8(Rt). Among workers with noise-induced shearing loss$(D_1)$, 16.3% was unilateral hearing loss and 84.6% was classified to compensation case. 8.8%(Rt) and 10.2%(Lt) of them were suspected to be conductive hearing loss by differences of air-bone hearing-threshold levels. Hearing-threshold levels of workers in manufacturing industry were significantly increased during the short exposure compared with the levels in mining industry. Among manufacturing industries, hearing-threshold levels of workers in trailer and other transportation equipment manufacturing industry were significantly increased. Age and duration of total noise exposure were not significantly related to the average hearing-threshold levels analyzed by three-divided classification. Hearing-threshold levels of female workers were significantly increased during the short exposure compared with those of male workers. Hearing-threshold levels of workers at the high risk group, ages of 20s, 30s and total exposure duration of less than 10 years, were not significantly increased compared with those of the other groups. However, they were exposed at young ages. The 3 leading industries of workers at high risk group were trailer and other transportation equipment manufacturing, automobile manufacturing and assemble-metal manufacturing industries. Conclusions. This study was the first nationwide analysis of the hearing-threshold levels and relating factors of workers with noise. induced hearing loss$(D_1)$. We found the differences of the real number by the statistics of the department of labour and the expected number of worker' s compensations for occupationally-induced hearing loss estimated by this study. According to the results of this study, we should carefully examine the methods to narrow this difference.

  • The microbial distribution of raw materials and beef jerky, and the effect of nisin on the growth of Bacillus cereus inoculated in beef jerky during storage, were studied. Five strains of pathogenic B. cereus were detected in beef jerky, and identified with 99.8% agreement using API CHB 50 kit. To evaluate the effect of nisin, beef jerky was inoculated with approximately 3 Log CFU/g of B. cereus mixed culture and nisin (100 IU/g and 500 IU/g). During the storage of beef jerky without nisin, the number of mesophilic bacteria and B. cereus increased unlikely for beef jerky with nisin. B. cereus started to grow after 3 d in 100 IU nisin/g treatment, and after 21 d in 500 IU nisin/g treatment. The results suggest that nisin could be an effective approach to extend the shelf-life, and improve the microbial safety of beef jerky, during storage.

  • The purpose of this study is to analysis the 3 differential size of the interior space for impulse noise. To achieve this goal the 3 kinds (27, 35, $50m^3$) of interior space were performed comparing the impulse noise. Result of this study, the standard error of the mean peak sound pressure of value from 0.19 to 0.27dB and there was no significant difference (p<0.01). And B-duration is significant differences (P<0.01) range from 3.98 to 7.93ms. This is respectively less than 10ms. These findings are confirmed in accordance by the 3 differential space size of the indoor-impulse noise due to 0.3 dB or less, so there was no difference to the operational influence. And also below 100 Hz were found fundamental mode frequency analysis. Results were matched with calculated theoretical values.

  • The ship maneuverability is changed by the effects of the bank cushion and the squat in the restricted water area. It is difficult to test the ship maneuverability by the real ship in the restricted water area because of ship's safety. In this study, a numerical model ship was used to simulate the ship's motion and to get information about the bank cushion and the squat in the restricted water area. The less apart from the quay the ship ran, the more ship's heading changed. The greatest change of ship's heading was $22.37^{\circ}$ when a ratio of the length between ship and quay to ship's breadh(=D/B) was 0.2. The squat of the ship was greater in shallower water and at faster speed. The greatest squat was 0.29m when a ratio of water depth to ship's draft(H/d) was 1.25 and ship's speed was 8 knots, the reduced speed was found to be the most important factor in the shallow water area for safety of the ship.
