  • The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) characterized the cancer hazard of di(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) as a B2 group (probable human carcinogen) and proposed "Guide-lines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment". This guidelines proposed alternative methods for analyzing carcinogen dose-response data and for extrapolating the effects of observed at high dose to predict that might occur at lower doses relevant to human exposure. This proposed guidelines state that "If in a particular case, the evidence indicated a threshold, as in the case of carcinogenicity being secondary to another toxicity that has a threshold, the margin of exposure analysis for toxicity is the same as is done for a non-cancer endpoint". DEHP is excellent candidate for reconideration under the new guidelines for carcinogen risk assessment (John Doull et al., 1998). This study is conducted about risk assessment for infant exposure on DEHP in powdered milk wing methodology in EPA's new guideline on carcinogenic risk assessment. Estimated cancer risk of DEHP in powdered milk and cow milk is 2.83$\times$$10^5$ (using cancer potency: 1.4$\times$$10^2$/ (mg/kg/day)) as mean and MOE is 12075 (using selected NOEL 20 mg/kg/day) as mean. mg/kg/day) as mean.

  • In this study, bending and compression strength tests were performed to investigate effect of composition of layer layout of Larix cross-laminated timber (CLT) on mechanical properties. The Larix CLT consists of five laminae, and specimens were classified into four types according to grade and composition of layer. The layer's layout were composited as follows 1) cross-laminating layers in major and minor direction (Type A), and 2) cross-laminating external layer in major direction and internal layer applied grade of layer in minor direction (Type B). E12 and E16 were used as grades of lamina for major direction layer of Type A and external layer of Type B according to KS F 3020. In results of the bending test of CLT using same grade layer according to layer composition, the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of Type B was higher than Type A. In case of prediction of bending MOE of Larix CLT, the experimental MOE was higher than 1.00 to 1.09 times for Shear analogy method and 1.14 to 1.25 times for Gamma method. Therefore, it is recommended to predict the bending MOE for Larix CLT by shear analogy method. Compression strength of CLT in accordance with layer composition was measured to be 2% and 9% higher for Type A using E12 and E16 layers than Type B, respectively. In failure mode of Type A, progress direction of failure generated under compression load was confirmed to transfer from major layer to minor layer by rolling shear or bonding line failure due to the middle lamina in major direction.

  • The mechanical and physical properties of wood are strongly dependent upon the slope of grain. Specially, tensile strength is more severely affected by the slope of grain. Therefore, tension tests were performed on small thin wood samples made from Pinus radiata with varying the slope of grain. Determining the tensile strength for clear thin wood samples the other variabilities associated with material, size, drying, defects, etc were discarded. Slope of grain was measured by the slope of grain indicator and actual slope of grain was also determined by a protractor. Correlation coefficients between machine measured and actual slope of grain for 40 pieces of 2×20 mm, 300 mm long Pinus radiata were 0.84 for wide face measurement. Results also showed that tensile strength and MOE from stress wave tests decreased with increasing the slope of grain. This study did not establish a relationships for tensile strength and MOE from stress wave with slope of grain. However, the trends of MOEs from stress wave test with both slope of grain are agreed well with Hankinson's equation. Predicted tension strength curve by Hankinson's equation was also agreed well with the experimental data over the range from 0 to 13 degrees for slope of grain.

  • The ubiquitous family of 14-3-3 proteins functions as regulators in a variety of physiological processes. Eight rice 14-3-3 genes, designated OsGF14a through h, were identified from an exhaustive search of the genome database. Comparisons of deduced amino acid sequences reveal a high degree of identity among members of the OsGF14 family and reported Arabidopsis 14-3-3 proteins. A phylogenetic study indicates that OsGF14s contain both $\varepsilon$ and non-$\varepsilon$ forms, which is also confirmed by a structural analysis of OsGF14 genes. Furthermore, transcripts of OsGF14b, OsGF14c, OsGF14d, OsGF14e, OsGF14f and OsGF14g were detected in rice tissues. Their different expression patterns, the different effects of environmental stresses and plant hormones on their transcription levels, and the different complementary phenotypes in yeast 14-3-3 mutants not only indicates that OsGF14s are responsive to various stress conditions and regulated by multiple signaling pathways, but also suggests that functional similarity and diversity coexist among the members of OsGF14 family.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of heat treatment the on mechanical properties of two species of wood under different heating conditions including at $180^{\circ}C$ for 12 h and 24 h, and at $210^{\circ}C$ for 3 h and 6 h. Two species of wood, Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi, were exposed to different heat treatments to assess the effects on the volume change, bending properties in static and dynamic mode and compressive strength. The results showed heat treatment caused significant changes in mechanical properties such as the static and dynamic moduli of elasticity ($MOE_d$ and $MOE_s$), and the modulus of rupture (MOR). The volume of the wood after heat treatment decreased as the heating temperature and time were increased. The bending strength performance of the wood after heat treatment decreased as the heating temperature and time were increased. The effect of heat treatment at a high temperature on the bending MOR was greater in both species than that for a long time. However, the compressive strengths of all the heat-treated samples were higher than the control sample. Furthermore, highly significant correlations between $MOE_d$ and MOR, and $MOE_s$ and MOR were found for all heating conditions.

  • Oxide-dispersion- strengthened nickel alloys with Hf additions are expected to present high temperature mechanical properties and durable helium resistance based on first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Energetic and charge density evaluations of the helium behaviors were performed in Ni matrix, Y2Hf2O7 oxide and the oxide/matrix interface. With the presence of coherent Y2Hf2O7 in Ni matrix, chances of helium bubbles in Ni can be greatly diminished. The helium atoms shall occupy the interfacial site initially, then diffuse into in the octahedral sites of Y2Hf2O7, and these oxide-captured He atoms prefer to separate individually. Much higher diffusion barrier of He in Y2Hf2O7 than in nickel is related to the strong hybridization between interstitial He-1s and nearest-neighboring O-2p orbitals.

  • Sparse regularization methods have proven effective in addressing the ill-posed equations encountered in moving force identification (MFI). However, the complexity of vehicle loads is often ignored in existing studies aiming at enhancing MFI accuracy. To tackle this issue, a double 𝑙1 regularization method is proposed for MFI based on a response spectrum-based weighted dictionary in this study. Firstly, the relationship between vehicle-induced responses and moving vehicle loads (MVL) is established. The structural responses are then expanded in the frequency domain to obtain the prior knowledge related to MVL and to further construct a response spectrum-based weighted dictionary for MFI with a higher accuracy. Secondly, with the utilization of this weighted dictionary, a double 𝑙1 regularization framework is presented for identifying the static and dynamic components of MVL by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method successively. To assess the performance of the proposed method, two different types of MVL, such as composed of trigonometric functions and driven from a 1/4 bridge-vehicle model, are adopted to conduct numerical simulations. Furthermore, a series of MFI experimental verifications are carried out in laboratory. The results shows that the proposed method's higher accuracy and strong robustness to noises compared with other traditional regularization methods.

  • To study the efficient usage of small diameter logs and woods containing defects such as knots, slope of the grain and decay, six types of finger-jointed woods with various finger profiles were made of poplar, pine and oak with different density. We investigated the effect of finger profile on static bending strength performances of finger-jointed woods. The efficiency of bending MOE, MOR and deflection showed the highest value in poplar finger-jointed wood with the lowest density of three species, and the lowest value in oak finger-jointed wood with the highest density of three species. The values markedly decreased with increasing finger pitch for finger-jointed wood glued with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) resin for all tested species, whereas for the finger-jointed wood glued with resorcinol-phenol formaldehyde (RPF) resin, the influence of finger pitch on the efficiency of MOE was not found in all tested species, and those on the efficiency of MOR and deflection indicated the same trend as finger-jointed wood glued with PVAc resin in the case of pine and oak finger-jointed wood with higher densities. It was found that the values tended to decrease with increasing density of species on the whole and the desirable finger pitches were L (6.8 mm) for poplar, M (4.4 mm) for pine and S (3.5 mm) for oak in a view of economy. For finger-jointed wood glued with PVAc resin, the fitness between a tip and a root width of a pair of fingers δ of 0.5 mm indicated the highest efficiency of MOE for all species. And, the influence of δ on MOR was only found in oak finger-jointed wood glued with RPF resin and the desirable δ value for oak was 0.1 mm. However, it was found that the influence of δ on the strength performance was very small.
