  • Under cyclic loading, the fatigue failures of welded joints occur at weld toes which induce stress concentration by weld shape. So we need to obtain the peak stress and the S-N curve to assess the fatigue strength of welded joints. However the measurement of peak stress is of high uncertainty and low reproducibility, so we use nominal stress instead in fatigue tests of welded joints. In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curves to that based on peak stress using the hot-spot stress concept. From the analyses of the S-N curves obtained, we have concluded that there is a need to develop a new method to evaluate the fatigue life.

  • In this paper, we consider biharmonic slant curves in S-space forms. We obtain a main theorem, which gives us four different cases to find curvature conditions for these curves. We also give examples of slant curves in ${\mathbb{R}}^{2n+s}(-3s)$.

Prediction of Cryogenic S-N Fatigue Behavior of Cast 304 Stainless Steel (304 스테인리스강 주조재의 저온 S-N 피로거동 예측)

  • S-N fatigue behavior of cast 304 stainless steel was studied at 25, -50 and $-196^{\circ}C$ and at a stress ratio of -1 in uniaxial and bending loading condition. It was found that the resistance to S-N fatigue was greatly improved with decreasing testing temperature. The normalized S-N fatigue curves by tensile strength at three different testing temperatures matched each other, suggesting that tensile strength determines the S-N fatigue resistance of cast 304 stainless steel at low temperatures. The effects of different loading on the resistance to S-N fatigue of cast 304 stainless steel were quantified. The S-N fatigue curves at 25, -50 and $-196^{\circ}C$ were described by using Basquin's law the relationship between the S-N fatigue curve and the testing temperature was obtained by using a simple regression method.

  • It is very important to have exact informations on the properties and characteristics of the sintered steel as a new material of machine elements. The bending fatigue tests are performed for the sintered steel bend specimens of various densities 6.6 to 7.0 g/$cm^3$ and the sintered spur gear to consisted of Fe-Cu-C. The fatigue test at a constant stress amplitude is performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester. Consequently, the S-N curves are obtained. The fatigue strength S for fatigue life N of the specimen with the initial length of crack ai is simulated, and they are shown as N-S-A curves.   • Rational parameterization of curves and surfaces is one of the main topics in computer-aided geometric design because of their computational advantages. Pythagorean hodograph (PH) curves and Minkowski Pythagorean hodograph (MPH) curves have attracted many researcher's interest because they provide for rational representation of their offset curves in Euclidean space and Minkowski space, respectively. In [10], Kim presented the characterization of the PH curves in the Euclidean space and analyzed the relation between the class of PH curves and the class of rational curves. In this paper, we extend the characterization of PH curves in [10] into that of MPH curves in the general Minkowski space and consider some generalized MPH curves satisfying this characterization.

  • Design curves have been prepared for prestressed rectangular beam section based on BS 8110, for determining area of steel for any given cross section, for stresses in concrete and steel and for the design moment. The design moment and the area of steel have been expressed in dimensionless form in terms of cross sectional dimensions and the characteristic strength of concrete. The choice and combination of design parameters result in considerably less number of curves as aid for design of rectangular prestressed beam sections, than those reported in CP 110 (Part 3).

  • Let x : $M^{n}$ .rarw. $E^{m}$ be an isometric immersion of a manifold $M^{n}$ into the Euclidean space $E^{m}$ and .DELTA. the Laplacian of $M^{n}$ defined by -div.omicron.grad. The family of such immersions satisfying the condition .DELTA.x = .lambda.x, .lambda..mem.R, is characterized by a well known result ot Takahashi (8]): they are either minimal in $E^{m}$ or minimal in some Euclidean hypersphere. As a generalization of Takahashi's result, many authors ([3,6,7]) studied the hypersurfaces $M^{n}$ in $E^{n+1}$ satisfying .DELTA.x = Ax + b, where A is a square matrix and b is a vector in $E^{n+1}$, and they proved independently that such hypersurfaces are either minimal in $E^{n+1}$ or hyperspheres or spherical cylinders. Since .DELTA.x = -nH, the submanifolds mentioned above satisfy .DELTA.H = .lambda.H or .DELTA.H = AH, where H is the mean curvature vector field of M. And the family of hypersurfaces satisfying .DELTA.H = .lambda.H was explored for some cases in [4]. In this paper, we classify space curves x : R .rarw. $E^{3}$ satisfying .DELTA.x = Ax + b or .DELTA.H = AH, and find conditions for such curves to be equivalent.alent.alent.

Fatigue performance of deepwater SCR under short-term VIV considering various S-N curves

  • In this study, a method for fatigue performance estimation of deepwater steel catenary riser (SCR) under short-term vortex-induced vibration was investigated for selected S-N curves. General tendency between S-N curve capacity and fatigue performance was analysed. SCRs are generally used to transport produced oil and gas or to export separated oil and gas, and are exposed to various environmental loads in terms of current, wave, wind and others. Current is closely related with VIV and it affects fatigue life of riser structures significantly. In this regards, the process of appropriate S-N curve selection was performed in the initial design stage based on the scale of fabrication-related initial imperfections such as welding, hot spot, crack, stress concentration factor, and others. To draw the general tendency, the effects of stress concentration factor (SCF), S-N curve type, current profile, and three different sizes of SCRs were considered, and the relationship between S-N curve capacity and short-term VIV fatigue performance of SCR was derived. In case of S-N curve selection, DNV (2012) guideline was adopted and four different current profiles of the Gulf of Mexico (normal condition and Hurricane condition) and Brazil (Amazon basin and Campos basin) were considered. The obtained results will be useful to select the S-N curve for deepwater SCRs and also to understand the relationship between S-N curve capacity and short-term VIV fatigue performance of deepwater SCRs.
