  • PURPOSES : Performance evaluation of four types of asphalt concrete overlays for deteriorated national highways. METHODS : Pavement distress surveys for crack rate and rut depth have been conducted annually using an automated pavement survey vehicle since 2007. Linear and non-linear performance prediction models of the asphalt concrete overlays were developed for 43 sections. The service life of the asphalt overlays was defined as the number of years after which a crack rate of 30% or rut depth of 15mm is observed. RESULTS : The service life of the asphalt overlays was estimated as 17.4 years on an average. In 90.7% of the sections, the service life of the overlays was 15 years or more which is 1.5 times the life of conventional asphalt concrete overlays used in national highways. The performance of the overlays was dependent on the type of asphalt mixture, traffic volume levels, and environmental conditions. CONCLUSIONS : The usage of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) for the overlays provided good resistance to cracking and rutting development. It is recommended that appropriate asphalt concrete overlays must be applied depending on the type of existing pavement distress.

  • Since the purpose of wheel tracking test is to find out relative difference of mixture's rut resistance, the wheel is an important part in the test for obtaining a consistent output. This study is performed to examine efficiency of different wheel material, rubber and steel in wheel tracking test. The rubber was inserted as a ring on the outer face of the steel wheel, and thickness of rubber ring was 15mm and 7.5mm and 0mm (steel wheel without rubber), making the total outer diameter 200mm. The objective of this study was to select reliable wheel material type in wheel tracking test at $60^{\circ}C$ based on variance in output (rut depth and dynamic stability) and correlation with SD (deformation strength). The result of regression analysis of rut depth with Sd showed that $R^2$ values of wheel rubber thickness of 15mm, 7.5mm and 0mm were 0.7, 0.8 and over 0.9, respectively. In a case of steel wheel (0mm), the highest $R^2$ value was 0.9569. Therefore, the wheel without rubber ring was the best in output consistency level and coefficient of determination $(R^2)$ with deformation strength. Therefore, the steel wheel without rubber ring is suggested as the best choice for wheel tracking test of asphalt concrete.

  • This study dealt with correlation analysis between deformation strength and rut resistance of asphalt concretes based on binder grade in Superpave specification with changing submerging time. Currently, Mashall mix design is known to have little correlation with rutting related performance. Therefore, some agencies started to use the Superpave method for asphalt mix design. But this method has a weak point in that it can not distinct mechanical property of the asphalt mixtures designed. For solution of these problem, this study used deformation strength, $S_D$, of Kim test which is a new approach under development for finding property which represents rut resistance characteristics of asphalt mixtures under static loading. This study used two aggregates from two regions and five PG asphalt binders. Final rut depth (DR) and dynamic stability (DS) from wheel tracking (WT) test were obtained. and $S_D$ value of the same mixture specimen which was made by gyratory compactor was obtained using loading head [4(1.0)]. Three submerging times 30min, 40min, 50min were used as a test variable at $60^{\circ}C$. Correlation analysis of DR and DS with $S_D$ were performed based on PG grade. It was found out that the $S_D$ has a high correlation with DR and DS of superpave mixtures. The highest $R^2$ was found from the $S_D$ values of 30min. submerged specimen.

  • Currently the reasonability of threshold values for rutting and cracking does not clearly defined at the Pavement Rehabilitation Decision Tree on national highway PMS(Pavement Management System). The goal of this study is to provide the reasonable threshold values for the national highway asphalt concrete pavement rehabilitation. To achieve this goal, test section that represents typical asphalt concrete pavement of national highway was selected and pavement export were participated. Pavement condition survey has been conducted and pavement performance data at the selected roadway section were analyzed. From this study, reasonable threshold values of Pavement Rehabilitation Decision Tree were suggested based on the pavement expert's engineering judgement. In terms of crack repairs, the application of overlay after cutting is required to deteriorated area where existing crack ratio is over 35% and just overlay is required to where crack ratio is over 20%. On rutting, rut depth over 13mm is required to overlay after cutting and rut depth over 10mm is just needed to overlay.

  • Warm-Mix Asphalt(WMA) mixtures, which meet environmental protection and have high energy efficiency, are emerging as an alternative to hot-mix asphalt mixtures. The objective of this study is to evaluate WMA made with Aspha-min in the laboratory and to compare the design results accomplished by new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide(MEPDG) with control mixture. An asphalt mixture with a nominal maximum size of 12.5mm and PG64-28 binder was used. Resilient modulus tests for a control mixture and WMA with 0.3% and 0.5% of Aspha-min were conducted. The results obtained by MEPDG after inputting the test output into the design indicated that the predicted rut depth of WMA using Aspha-min was much lower than that of control mixture, and showed that WMA was more resistant to rutting than control mixture.

  • PURPOSES : The PMS(Pavement Management System) has been utilized in order to efficiently allocate the limited budget for the maintenance of national highway system. In the PMS of national highway, surface pavement condition is evaluated by using the VI (Visual Index). However, the VI is determined only by considering the cracking rate (%) and rut depth (mm), which is not reflecting the IRI (International Roughness Index) that is known as an important factor of pavement performance. In this study, the NHPCI (National Highway Pavement Condition Index) which includes the cracking rate (%), rut depth (mm), and IRI (m/km) is suggested for determining the rehabilitation methods group. METHODS : First, the rehabilitation methods performed between 2008 and 2010 on the national highway is classified and then, NHPCI is determined for each rehabilitation method. Next, the NHPCI for each rehabilitation method is grouped through the interval estimation of the population mean and T-test analysis. RESULTS : According to NHPCI range, the rehabilitation methods are divided into four categories: Not Required, Preventive Maintenance, Overlay Treatment (with or without cutting), and Full-scale Treatment (i.e., reconstruction). CONCLUSIONS : Based on this study, it is recommended that the appropriate NHPCI range should be determined through the combination of the rehabilitation categories and Decision Procedure of Pavement Distress Condition Visual Index.

  • This study dealt with analysis of size effect of testing apparatus for Kim test which measures rut resistance characteristics of asphalt mixture under static loading. Two columns in different diameter with each column having different radios of round cut (Curvature) at the bottom were used for testing asphalt mixture. Deformation load ($P_{max}$) and deformation strength ($K_D$) were found to have relatively high correlation with rut depth and dynamic stability of asphalt concrete. Diameter of specimen was not a significant factor in this test. From the statistical correlation analysis with rutting properties, the radius of curvature and diameter of loading column were found to be important factor affecting the results of the test. Among the radios (r) of curvatures, r=0.5cm and 1.0cm showed much higher correlation than the column without curvature, and r=1.0cm being better between the two. The column with diameter of 4cm showed better correlation than diameter of 3cm. Therefore, the column of 4cm diameter with r=1.0cm was found to be the best among various apparatus sizes. Prediction models for rut depth and dynamic stability were developed for each aggregate mixture based on Kim test variables using SAS STEPWISE procedure. Therefore, if this test method is validated through further study, Kim test can be used for selecting asphalt mixture with the highest resistance against permanent deformation.

  • Deformation strength($S_D$) is a property which shows relatively good correlation with rut resistance of asphalt mixtures at high temperature. The Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) is widely used as an equipment for estimating rut resistance of asphalt mixtures. The APA was used as corresponding property of the $S_D$ to estimate rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures. Many data were collected to establish the correlation of $S_D$ with APA. For $S_D$ test, the specimen is submerged into the $60^{\circ}C$ water for 30 minutes before applying a vertical load at the speed of 50mm/min to obtain peak load (P) and deformation (y) for $S_D$ calculation. For the same materials, APA test was performed. Relation of the $S_D$ with APA rut depth was evaluated using regression analysis. The $R^2$ value was 0.76, indicating this simple test procedure being a possible method for predicting deformation resistance of asphalt concretes at high temperature. It was also shown that, using the regression model, minimum value(s) of $S_D$ of surface course asphalt mixture or binder course for a particular road level can be determined. The limit values may be possible to use as cut-off value(s) of asphalt mixtures for the layer after further elaborated studies.

  • The ultra-precision cutting is a key technique for the manufacture of optical components such as aluminium mirrors, electroless nickel mirror, plastic mirror in a variety of advanced science and technology applications. The paper presents experimental results of ultra-precision diamond fuming of electroless nickel materials. In general, the cutting condition such as feed rate and depth of rut, have effect on the surface roughness in ultra-precision diamond turning. To obtain an optimal cutting condition, we studied the effect of the cutting speed. the tool length, the tool nose radius, the feed rate and depth of cut on the surface roughness. So, the relationship of the surface roughness and cutting condition has been clarified. From the experimental results, the machined surface roughnesses were obtained less than 1nm rms.

  • On the basis of several experiments peformed, Bahia et al. (1998) concluded that the current Superpave PG-grading system failed to characterize grading specification of fill modified binders. This conclusion motivates us to investigate the correct grating system suited for modified asphalt binders. The main concept of this development is originated from the relationship between rut depth and binder properties at high temperatures. A new grading system for modified asphalt binders suggested here somewhat resembles to the unmodified binder grading one developed by Huh et al. (2000). Thus, this investigation will provide a unified single theoretical equation of high temperature grading that can apply both to modified and unmodified binders, and will check its effectiveness with the laboratory and the field rut data reported by independent studies. Successful results observed may allow to construction of a correct grading system in the near future.
