  • The destruction and fracture of rock masses are crucial components in engineering and there is an increasing demand for the study of the influence of rock mass heterogeneity on the safety of engineering projects. The numerical manifold method (NMM) has a unified solution format for continuous and discontinuous problems. In most NMM studies, material homogeneity has been assumed and despite this simplification, fracture mechanics remain complex and simulations are inefficient because of the complicated topology updating operations that are needed after crack propagation. These operations become computationally expensive especially in the cases of heterogeneous materials. In this study, a heterogeneous model algorithm based on stochastic theory was developed and introduced into the NMM. A new fracture algorithm was developed to simulate the rupture zone. The algorithm was validated for the examples of the four-point shear beam and semi-circular bend. Results show that the algorithm can efficiently simulate the rupture zone of heterogeneous rock masses. Heterogeneity has a powerful effect on the macroscopic failure characteristics and uniaxial compressive strength of rock masses. The peak strength of homogeneous material (with heterogeneity or standard deviation of 0) is 2.4 times that of heterogeneous material (with heterogeneity of 11.0). Moreover, the local distribution of parameter values can affect the configuration of rupture zones in rock masses. The local distribution also influences the peak value on the stress-strain curve and the residual strength. The post-peak stress-strain curve envelope from 60 random calculations can be used as an estimate of the strength of engineering rock masses.

  • Creep of metals has been explained conventionally by dislocation climb and grain boundary sliding indiffusion controlled process. The reorienations of the atoms in the grain by three dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings are visualized as grain rotatins during slow deformation, fold formatin at triple point, increased crevice dspace between grains. grain boundary sliding, grain boundary micration and formation of cracks at the grain boundaries . And also the rupture time and average creep strain rate are explained by the three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$- bondings and they can be determined by uniaxial tensile test.

  • In order to find out which equipment failures were mostly contributed to the rupture of a continuous stirred tank reactor, the sensitivity analysis was carried out. The uncertainty of likelihood of the rupture of reactor was studied by the uncertainty analysis. And the cost effectiveness analysis resulted in the recommendation of the exchange with a better reliable unit if you want to maintain the process efficiently from the view point of cost. The uncertainty analysis showed that the likelihood of catastrophic rupture of the reactor was distributed from $8.09{\times}10^{-04}$ to $5.50{\times}10^{-02}/year$. As a result of cost-effectiveness analysis, it was proposed to exchange the voting logic unit for a better safer system.

  • The fracture of a turbine blade of aerospace engine is presented. Although there are a lot of causes and failure modes in blades, the main failure modes are two ways that fracture and fatigue. Degradation of blade material affects most failure modes. Total propagation of failure in this study specifies failure of fracture type. Some section appears fatigue mode. Especially since this study describes analysis of failure for blade in high temperature, it can be a case in point. Analysed blade is Ni super alloy. Investigations of blade are visual inspection, material, microstructure, high temperature stress rupture creep test, analysis and fracture surface, etc. The root cause for fracture was stress rupture due to abnormal thermal environment. Thermal property of Ni super alloy is excellent but if each chemical composition of alloys are different due to change mechanical properties, selection of material is very important.

  • Traumatic cardiac injury is an extremely serious medical condition. It is possible to overlook a cardiac injury where there is no chest wall trauma. We here report the 47-year-old woman who got a crach car accident and had a tear of the right atrium. The distortion force from a decelerating injury may cause cardiac rupture at a fixed point. The most common symptom that alerts the clinician to a potentially fatal cardiac injury is the change in vital signs. Therefore cardiac injury should be considered in any patient with unexplained hypotension who has experienced decelerating trauma, even without external injury to the chest wall.

  • In order to prevent an ammonia container from bursting under conditions such as overcharging and abnormal temperature rise, it is necessary to prepare accident prevention measures through analysis of the operating mechanism of the Thermally Activated Pressure Relief Devices (TPRD) attached to the container. In this study, stress analysis acting on the ammonia container under pressurized conditions, density change analysis according to temperature change, and correlation between container filling amount and temperature and pressure change were presented. In addition, the maximum filling amount of the ammonia container was calculated, and the temperature and pressure at the filling amount were calculated through the phase equilibrium diagram. Based on this, the appropriate melting point of the Thermally Activated Pressure Relief Devices was derived and verified through a melting temperature experiment. Based on the results of this study, conditions for preventing ammonia container rupture accidents were suggested.

  • Mechanically-alloyed NiAl powder was sintered by Spark-Plasma Sintering (SPS) process. Densification and behavior mechanical property were determined from the experimental results and analysis ,such as changes in linear shrinkage, shrinkage rate, microstructure, and phase during sintering process, Victors hardness, and transver.ie-rupture-strength (TRS). Above 97% relative density was obtained after sintering at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. Crystallite size determined by the Scherrer method was approximately 50 nm. From the X-ray diffraction analysis it was confirmed that the sintered bodies were composed mainly of NiAl phase together with Ni$_3$Al phase. Measured Vickers hardness and TRS value were 555$\pm$10 $H_v$ and 1393$\pm$75 MPa , respectively.

  • There has been no report on the life prediction for gas turbine materials at high temperatures based on the creep properties and their relationship with the AE(acoustic emission) properties as a means of real-time non-destructive testing. One of the important issues is thus to develop a reliable method of evaluating creep properties by the AE technique. In this paper, the real-time evaluation of high temperature creep time and AE cumulative counts for nickel-based superalloy Udimet 720 was performed on round-bar type specimens under pure load at the temperatures of 811, 922 and 977K. The total AE cumulative counts until the starting point of secondary creep($N_1$) and that of tertiary creep($N_2$) have quantitative relationship with the tertiary creep time and the rupture time. It is thus possible to construct the life prediction system based on creep and the prevention system of tertiary creep by using AE technique.

  • This study was conducted to confirm an effect of span length on bending properties of larch dimensional lumber in the four point bending test. The size of specimen in this study was 38 (width) ${\times}$ 89 (depth) ${\times}$ 3,600 (length) $mm^3$, and average air-dry density and moisture content of the specimens was $543.5kg/m^3$ and 10.5%, respectively. Visually graded No. 1 dimensional lumbers of 248 were divided by two groups to compare modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE). One group was tested in the four point bending test with span length of 1,650 mm, and other was tested with span length of 3,000 mm. While MOE was not different according to span length in 5% significance level, MOR was different in accordance with span lengths and was in inverse proportion to change of span length. Fifth percentiles of MOR in span length of 1,650 and 3,000 mm were 28.65 and 25.70 MPa, respectively. It was confirmed that the difference between MORs in each case increased as normalized rank increased. This is because of size effect in Weibull weakest link failure theory. Therefore, KS F 2150, in which there is only regulation about span to depth ratio of 15 or more, is needed to be revised to contain a method considering size effect for MOR. From the method, various results of bending test with different size of lumber could be used to determine design value of lumber.
