Analysis of Forming Pressure and Burst Pressure of Rupture Disc (Rupture Disc의 성형압력 및 파열압력 해석)

  • Forming pressure of the rupture disc has been analyzed theoretically and verified by experiments. Final shape of the rupture disc after forming process is assumed to be hemi-ellipsoid for small height of the rupture disc. The predicted forming pressures are in good agreement with those by experiment. A new simple model has been proposed to predict the burst pressure of the rupture disc. Experimental results show that the proposed model of burst pressure describes the bursting characteristics of the rupture disc very well.

  • This paper provides a comparison between finite element analysis results and test data of rupture disc. Rupture disc is safety device of high pressure equipment. Rupture disc of solid rocket motor is a device to control rupture pressure. Rupture discs were made of AISI 316L. By the elastic-plastic analysis, the stress limit of rupture discs were compared to the test results. The results can be used to control the rupture pressure by the change of the disc size.

  • Dual pulse rocket motor is a solid motor with two grains separated by a bulkhead and rupture disc. The elasto-plastic explicit dynamic analysis for the rupture disc was conducted by finite element method. The effect of the slit geometry of a rupture disc was parametrically analyzed in terms of rupture time and shape. The results can be used to control the rupture pressure by changing the slit geometry of rupture disc.

  • The rupture disc shapes of bulkhead type pulse separation device(PSD) are designed for new dual pulse rocket motor. Before final design PSD, that three different rupture disc are tested and confirmed the performance of the discs. Through analyzing the test results the PSD decides, two rupture disc shapes with flow holes of eight circles and eight trapezoids.

  • High pressure devices are used widely. Interest in rupture disc to people is the increases in protect of facilities and people. A rupture disc consists of mainly three parts: holder, plate and vacuum support. Rupture discs are rusted or destroyed by diverse environments. Rupture discs are made from STS 316L stainless steel because of its high corrosion resistance and yield strength. In this study, modeling of a rupture disc by CATIA V5 and finite element analysis by ANSYS were carried out. The finite element analysis results executed to predict properties of the rupture disc with thickness and height.

  • A bulkhead-type pulse separation device has been developed for the multi-pulse rocket motor. The design parameters of the pulse separation device were the shape of the rupture disc slit, welding conditions, and the implementation of the seal disc. The pneumatic tests of the fabricated pulse separation devices showed that the rupture pressure increased as the quantity of the rupture disc slit and welding strength increased and the seal disc was implemented.

  • Many of the liquid rocket engines use a hypergolic igniter with rupture disc ends located in the combustion chamber ignition line. In this study, the flow coefficient tests of the igniter, which have a solenoid valve upstream, were performed. The tension-type rupture discs for radial and circumferential scores and the igniter with them were tested using water at room temperature. The effects of the score, flow rate, the disc thickness, gas pocket and the solenoid valve on the coefficient were analyzed.

  • Survey on the hypergolic igniter and rupture disc for liquid rocket engines was performed. The patent of the igniter for US MC-1 and Russia RD-170 Engine and the disc for NASA's space vehicle were analyzed. The types, characteristics, performances, design parameters and ASME standards of the disc are examined. The performances have manufacturing tolerance, reverse pressure, flow disturbance, fragmentation, material, working fluid and operating ratio. Also, survey on structural analyses of the rupture disc were performed.
