Jeju island, which is located along the moving path of typhoon, suffers from flooding and overflow by torrential rain. So abrupt runoff occurring, damages of downstream farm field and shore culturing farms are increasing. In this study, Oaedo stream, one of the mountainous streams on Jeju island, was selected as the basin of study subject and was classified into 3 sub-basins, and after the characteristics of subject basin, the soil erosion amount and the sediment delivery of the stream by land usage distribution were estimated with the use of SATEEC ArcView GIS, the sediment yield amount of 2000 and 2005 was analyzed comparatively. As a result of estimating the sediment yield amount of 2000, the three sub-basins were respectively 12,572.7, 14,080 and 157,761 tons/year. and sediment yield amounts were estimated as 35,172.9, 5,266 and 258,535 tons/year respectively in 2005. The soil erosion and sediment yield amount of 2005 using single storm rainfall were estimated high compared with 2000, but for sub-basin 2, the values rather decreased due to changes in land use, and the land coverage of 2005, since there are many classifications of land usage compared with 2000, enabling to reflect more accurate land usage condition, could deduce appropriate results. It is anticipated that such study results can be utilized as basic data to propose a direction to predict the amount of sediment yield that causes secondary flooding damage and deteriorates water quality within detention pond and grit chamber, and take action against damages in the downstream farm field and shore culturing farms.

Climate change affects the natural ecosystem and human socioeconomic activities by acting on various constituents such as the atmospheric, oceanic, biological, and land constituents of the climate. Predicting the impacts of ongoing climate change will be an important factor in adapting to the climate of the future. In this study, precipitation-streamflow elasticity analysis of the Nakdong River area was conducted using the RCP 4.5 scenario developed by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Precipitation and streamflow in the Nakdong River area was analyzed using monthly, seasonal, and yearly data. Results found that the climate would become very humid climate by 2100. Results of this study can be applied to adaptation of climate change, management of water resources and efficient utilization of hydraulic structures.
Extractable concentrations (0.1 N & 1.0 N HCI) of heavy metals in roadside sediments are lower than guidelines for soil recommended by Ministry of Environment. Heavy traffic areas (such as No. 7 national road) show high contents of heavy metals, especially, at curved areas, gully pot, crackdown areas on overspeed, pedestrian crossing etc. Fine fractions $(<63\;{\mu}m)$ of roadside sediments have the highest concentrations of heavy metals, but mass loadings of heavy metal are determined by coarse fractions $(>100{\mu}m)$, due to washing out of fine fraction sediment by runoff water. Proper treatment facilities are needed to control the inflow of fine roadside sediments from No. 7 national road and bridge such as Hanmul bridge.

Environmental impact assessment has been implemented for more than 30 years in Korea. During that period, various amendments were carried out about target plan and assessment factors. However, in current environmental impact assessment act, only a few factors has been considered for soil environment assessment. This study analyzes the national and foreign environmental impact assessment guidelines on soil related factors and figures out the problems and implications of Korean environmental impact assessment. In Korea, water quality, topography and geology, hydraulics and hydrology, and soil contamination were analyzed as a soil related factors. The main assessment targets were pollution related factors such as soil pollution levels, amount of rainfall runoff, and non-point sources. However, in the case of foreign guidelines, soil compaction, soil sealing, and soil salinization is being analyzed for evaluating function and quality of soil environment. The revision of soil-related factors are needed for sustainable development of Korea.
The slopes of open-pit mine are typically designed without considering the reinforcement and support method due to the economical efficiency. However, the long-term stability of final pit slope is needed in some case, therefore the appropriate measures that can improve the stability are required. In this study, the field survey and laboratory test were carried out in S limestone mine. The stability assessment of final pit slope was performed through the stereographic projection method, SMR, and numerical analysis. And countermeasures for stabilization were proposed. The results of analysis show that full scale of slope failure is not expected but the failures of bench slope scale are likely to occur. In oder to increase the stability of bench slope, we suggested the remedial methods as follows: excavating the final pit slope by pre-splitting blasting, placing the wide berm in the intermediate bench slope and installing the horizontal drainage hole in the place of local ground water runoff.

The purpose of this study was to calibrate the hydrologic parameters of SWAT model and analyze the daily runoff for the study watershed using SWAT-CUP. The Hardware watershed is located in Virginia, USA. The watershed area is $356.15km^2$, and the land use accounts for 73.4 % of forest and 23.2 % of pasture. Input data for the SWAT model were obtained from the digital elevation map, landuse map, soil map and others. Water flow data from 1990 to 1994 was used for calibration and from 1997 to 2005 was for validation. The SUFI-2 module of the SWAT-CUP program was used to calibrate the hydrologic parameters. The parameters were calibrated for the highly sensitive parameters presented in previous studies. The P-factor, R-factor, $R^2$, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), and average flow were used for the goodness-of-fit measures. The applicability of the model was evaluated by sequentially increasing the number of applied parameters from 4 to 11. In this study, 10-parameter set was accepted for calibration in consideration of goodness-of-fit measures. For the calibration period, P-factor was 0.85, R-factor was 1.76, $R^2$ was 0.51 and NS was 0.49. The model was validated using the adjusted ranges of selected parameters. For the validation period, P-factor was 0.78, R-factor was 1.60, $R^2$ was 0.60 and NS was 0.57.

The control of nonpoint source pollution from the urban paved areas with high imperviousness in is required to improve the water quality of aquatic resources. This research investigated the characteristics of urban runoffs and evaluate the effectiveness of the continuous deflective separation systems for stormwater best management practice. The systems were installed in the vicinity of a high-level road, an apartment complex, and the Cheonggye stream. Stormwater runoff was sampled in these sites. Biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total suspended solid (TSS), total nitrogen (T-N), and total phosphorus (T-P) were analyzed. The removal efficiency of $BOD_5$, TSS, and T-P for the road was 10.9-81.0%, 11.7-93.4%, 0-37.5%, respectively. That of $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N, and T-P for the complex was 12.5-65.8%, 26.5-77.6%, 1.8-28.7%, and 20.0-37.5%, respectively. The abatement efficiency $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N, and T-P for the stream was 7.2-85.2%, 41.7-98.2%, 11.3-65.6%, and 2.0-71.5%, respectively. This study shows that the systems can be used to remove $BOD_5$ and TSS from urban runoffs efficiently.
Area average rainfall estimation is important to determine the exact amount of the available water resources and the essential input data for rainfall-runoff analysis. Like that, the necessary criterion for accurate area average rainfall estimate is the uniform spatial distribution of raingauge network. In this study, we suggest the spatial distribution evaluation methodology of raingauge network to estimate better area average rainfall and after the suggested method is applied to Han River and Geum River basin. The spatial distribution of rainfall network can be quantified by the nearest neighbor index. In order to evaluate the effects of the spatial distribution of rainfall network by each basin, area average rainfall was estimated by arithmetic mean method, the Thiessen's weighting method and estimation theory for 2013's rainfall event, and evaluated the involved errors by each cases. As a result, it can be found that the estimation error at the best basin of spatial distribution was lower than the worst basin of spatial distribution.
As the development of national lands increase, the necessity to develop less favorable terrain also increases. It also becomes more difficult and complicated to provide access that is both economical and safe from contributing to soil erosion on roadsides and to londscape damages. Because of the increased and justified emphasis upon environmental degradation, proper stabilization of the cut-and bank slopes of roadsides, plant sites and building sites in Korea requires careful planning as well as execution of the constructions. All fill slopes should be compacted to a degree consistent with design standards and material properties. Drainage facilities should be provided to prevent damaging concentrations of surface runoff and to avoid high pore pressures in cuts and fills. All surfaces of cut-fill slopes should be revegetated with suitable species as soon as possible after construction. To stabilize the cut-fill slopes of highway roadsides should be considerded the factor of stabilization as well as landscape conservation especially. Such basic influences as the effects of vegetations on water balance of rain fall, on the control of surface erosion and on the surface slope failures are briefly discussed in the report.

The objective of this study was to identify the applicability of AGNPS(Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution) model using RS data; Landsat TM merged by KOMPSAT EOC and GIS data. AGNPS model which is well-known distributed nonpoint source pollution model was used as the assessment tool. This model has the capability to adjust the level of pollutant load from farmstead and the fertilization level of upland field. A small agricultural watershed($4.12km^2$) which has 20 livestock farmhouses located in Gosan-myun, Ansung-gun was selected. AGNPS data were prepared by using Arc/Info, GRASS, ER-Mapper and Idrisi. Four storm events in 1999 were used for runoff calibration, and 2 storm events which were measured in hourly-base at 4 locations along the stream were used for water quality(TN, TP) calibration.
