  • The electro-optical characteristics of TN(twisted nematic)-LCD(liquid crystal display) with photo-dimerized on a PMCh(poly(4'methacryoyloxylchalcone)) surface using a new photo-dimerization method was studied. The excellent voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of TN-LCD with photo-dimerized on a PNCh surface for 1 min. using a new photo-dimerization method was observed. Also, the voltage-hold-ing-ratio(VHR) of TN-LCD with photo-dimerized on a PMCh surface using a new photo-dimerization method is higher than that of conventional photo-dimerization method. Consequently, we suggest that the new photo-dimerization method. Consequently, we suggest that the new photo-dimerization method for LC aligning is the most promising rubbing-free techniques.

  • Silica microgel was prepared by sol-gel process and then functional groups, epoxy group and ethoxy group, were introduced on the particle by coupling treatment with 3-glysidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The functional silica microgel(functional SiGel) formation was identified using FT-IR spectrometry. Phase stability for DMF solution of functional SiGel, PU resin and pigment was evaluated by Turbiscan Lab. And physical properties of artificial suede including hand values, morphology and dyeing fastness were investigated. The mean particle size and the specific surface area of the functional SiGel were $0.77{\mu}m$ and $380m^2/g$. Mixture containing the functional SiGel, PU resin and pigment was more stable than the functional SiGel-free mixed solution. Artificial suede prepared by the functional SiGel had appearance and feeling close to natural suede. The migration fastness, the solvent wicking fastness and rubbing fastness of the artificial suede were enhanced to 4~5 grades, 4~5 grades and 3~4 grades, respectively.

  • Compared with conventional adsorption-based coloration, the photoreactions of dyes such as photo-copolymerization and photo-crosslinking under UV irradiation can be employed for the coloration of textiles, which can be carried out without salt addition at room temperature. C.I. Reactive Black 5, a homo-bifunctional reactive dye containing two sulfatoethylsulfone groups, is used as a photo-reactive dye for wool fibers. Upon UV irradiation, the photo-reactive dye was grafted onto wool fabrics without photoinitiators. Since the disulfide bonds in the cystine residues of wool can be easily photodecomposed to active thiyl radicals which initiate the polymerization, the dye can be polymerized to an oligomeric dye of a degree of polymerization of 12 or more. The grafted fabrics reached a grafting yield of 2.3% o.w.f. and a color yield (K/S) of 18.2 by the photografting of an aqueous dye concentration of 9% using a UV energy of 25J/$cm^2$. Furthermore, the photochemically dyed wool fabric showed higher colorfastness properties to light, laundering and rubbing comparable to conventional reactive dyeing.

  • Magnetic seal uses a magnetic fluid to seal a gap between a rotating shaft and housing. It is distinguished from other kinds of seals from the fact that solid contact does not occur in the seal. This implies that it is free from solid rubbing thus dustless and provides a clean circumstance. That is the reason why the magnetic seal is used exclusively for most of vacuum chambers in semiconductor process where dustless clean circumstance is critical. A magnetic seal has been developed of which design parameters are determined based on published data, and an air pressure test has been done to examine its sealing capability. Effects of some design parameters have been studied through FEM analysis. The results show some notable aspects of design parameters and provide suggestions for developing the seals. Regarding the sealing capacity of the magnetic seal the factor to match the theoretical value with the actual one was found to be 0.4~0.7, which means still there is some discrepancy between theory and actual.

  • Saponin of Panax ginseng (C.A. Meyer) is composed of Protopanaxatriol (PT) and Protopanaxa- diol (PD). We investigated the effects of PT and PD on the contractility and $^{45}Ca$ uptake in the pig coronary artery. Isometric tension in the helical strips and $^{45}Ca$ uptake in the ring strips were measured in the presence or absence of PT and PD. PT and PD did not affect the high K+ (40 mM)-induced contraction but relaxed the ACh-induced contraction in a dose4ependent manner (1~10 mg/dl). The vasorelaxing effect of PT on the ACh-induced contraction was more potent than that of PD. Those relaxations were partially suppressed by the rubbing of endothelium removal. ACh-induced contraction in the $Ca^{2+}$-free Tyrode's solution was suppressed by the pretreatment of PT or PD. Following the depletion of ACh-sensitive intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ pool, ACh-induced contraction was suppressed by the pratreatment of PT or PD. With the pretreatment of PT or PD, $^{45}Ca$ uptake by high K+ (43 mM) was not changed but that by ACh was suppressed in the pig coronary artery. From the above results, we suggested that the vasorelaxing effect of PT and PD of Panax ginseng was due to inhibition of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ release, inhibition of $Ca^{2+}$ uptake via receptor-operated $Ca^{2+}$ channels and in part a release of vasorelaxing factor from endothelium in pig coronary artery.
