In this paper we investigated the characteristics of surface degradation in silicone rubber due to corona exposure and recovery mechanism. It was shown that surface free energy was 22.42 mJ/$m^2$ on initial sample but surface free energy was approximately increased to 71.14 mJ/$m^2$ after 45 minutes. However, surface free energy on silicone rubber after corona discharge treatment was completely recovered within a short time due to diffusion of low molecular weight(LMW) silicone fluid. It was shown that corona discharge insured the increase of diffusible LMW chains, which could lead to recover the surface hydrophobicity. 200~370 g/mol distribution of LMW silicone fluid which was extracted by solvent-extraction with gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was contributed to recovery. The surface degradation characteristics on silicone rubbers and the recovery mechanism based on our results were discussed.

In this paper, the effect of adhesion properties of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber on electrical properties was investigated. The modifications produced on the silicone surface by oxygen plasma were accessed using ATR-FTIR, contact angle and Surface Roughness Tester. Adhesion was obtained from T-peel tests of semiconductive layer haying different treatment durations. In addition, ac breakdown test was carried out for elucidating the change of electrical property with duration of plasma treatment. From the results, the treatment in the oxygen plasma produced a noticeable increase in surface energy, which can be mainly ascribed to the creation of O-H and C=O. It is observed that adhesion performance was determined by surface energy and roughness level of silicone surface. It is found that at dielectric strength was increased with improving the adhesion between the semiconductive and insulating interface.
Manufacturing process of OLED contains adsorption-desorption process of glass substrate. There are several adsorption methods of glass substrate such as atmospheric pressure, vacuum and electrostatic adsorption. However, these methods are very complex to connect system. Therefore, the adsorption method using silicone rubber based sticking chuck was proposed in this study. Three types of silicone rubbers having 0, 19.3 and 32.2 wt% of fluorine were used and their mechanical properties, surface energies and adsorption properties were examined. According to the results ${\sigma}_{300}$ and hardness increased with increasing fluorine contents, but elongation was decreased. Also, fluorosilicone rubber containing 32.2 wt% of fluorine showed the lowest surface tension, among three types of rubber and resulted in the highest initial tack with glass substrate. After the adsorption-desorption test of 300,000 cycles was performed, the adsorption force of S-1 (silicone rubber) decreased largely from 2.34 to 0.73 MPa. However, the S-3 (fluorosilicone rubber having 32.2 wt%. of fluorine) decreased only from 3.15 to 2.24 MPa. From this study, we obtained the valuable equations related to long term durability of silicone based sticking chuck. Finally the transfer of silicone rubber to glass substrate with the adsorption-desorption process was not occurred and this phenomenon was examined by UV-Visible spectroscopy.
Membrane process has been employed to separate a specific substance from gas or liquid mixture, and treat wastewater. This is due to the fact that the substance of mixture can be permeated and separated selectively by membrane. Since Initial equipment and operation costs are not expensive, membrane process has been adopted in various fields such as petroleum Industry, chemistry, polymer, electronics, foods, biochemical industry and wastewater treatment. In this study, $CaCO_3$ particles impregnated in silicone rubber network were extracted by using supercritical carbon dioxide and pore distribution of silicone $rubber-CaCO_3$ was investigated with varying amount of extract. Silicone rubber has excellent mechanical properties such as heat-resistance, cold-resistance etc. and $CaCO_3$ has microporous structure. It is possible to make silicone $rubber-CaCO_3$ composite sheets via work-intensive kneading processes. In so doing $CaCO_3$ particles become distributed and impregnated in silicone rubber network. Supercritical carbon dioxide diffuse through composite sample, then sample is swollen. $CaCO_3$ in silicone rubber network Is dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide, and its sites become pores. Pore distribution, pore shape and surface area are observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) micrograph and BET surface area analyzer examination respectively. Pore characteristics of membrane suggest the possibilities that the membrane can be used for process of mixture separation and wastewater treatment.

Kevlar was chemically surface modified with resorcinol-formaldehyde(RF) prepolymer and VP rubber latex for application to high strength tirecords. RF prepolymer was easily obtained by polymerization at room temperature in the presence of a base catalyst. The mechanical and thermal properties of Kevlar were not significantly changed during surface treated under various conditions. The change of adhesion with rubber were investigated through H-test method. Maximum increase of adhesion force between rubber and Kevlar was obtained up to 40% than that of untreated one when the fiber was soaked in RFL dipping solution and thermally treated at $170^{\circ}C$ for 3 - 5min.

This paper presents a study on the aging and recovery of HTV (high temperature vulcanized) silicone rubber used for outdoor insulators. UV irradiation, corona discharge and water immersion were employed as factors of the artificial aging. The effects of changes derived from these stresses on the tracking and arc resistance of silicone rubber were examined. We have investigated the aging phenomena of HTV silicone rubber by the above stresses using the surface energy calculation with contact angle measurement, solvent-extraction, and surface/volume resistivity and so on. These results showed that UV irradiation and corona discharge lead to nearly the same surface oxidation, but the percentage change of mobile low molecular weight by these stresses was different. Furthermore, the oxidized layer induced under UV irradiation restricted the recovery of hydrophobic surface. Water immersion little lowered hydrophobicity level and leaded to a loss of tracking and arc resistance. The degradation mechanism based on our results was discussed.
In this work, the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was melt-blended with EPDM, NBR and BR to form TPU/Rubber blend films, their composition and friction-induced surface fracture relationship was investigated. TPU/EPDM and TPU/BR blends exhibited the improved friction-induced surface fracture, especially the effect of BR was excellent. With addition of more than 10 wt% BR, TPU/BR blends exhibited the improved friction-induced surface fracture. The increase of the soft segment with increasing BR content, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis enabled us to estimate the improved friction-induced surface fracture.

In this paper, we have investigated the degradation of shed materials of outdoor insulators by UV-radiation by using corona-charging and XPS analysis. The accumulated charges on polymeric surface having intrinsic hydrophobic property have a negative impact on retaining its hydrophobicity. Therefore, shorter decay times of surface charges are preferred. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM show a different decay trend with UV treated time. From the XPS analysis, the oxidized groups of silica-like structure in silicone rubber increase with UV treatment time. For EPDM, the oxidized carbon groups of C=O, O=C-O increase as elapse of UV radiation time. These oxidized surface for each material have different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges may be expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results is discussed.

Recently, microwaves have been used for desulfurization because they can selectively dissociate C-S and S-S bonds present in vulcanized rubber. In this study, we investigated the changes in structural and physical properties of EPDM (Ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber by irradiating it with microwaves for different durations. The surface chemical composition of the irradiated EPDM rubber was analyzed by FT-IR, XPS, and EDS analyses. It was confirmed by XPS that C-S and S-S S2p peak heights greatly decreased when microwave irradiation was performed for more than 5 min. In the EPDM sample irradiated with microwaves for 10 min, the number of S-O bonds significantly increased owing to oxidation. As the microwave irradiation time was increased, SEM images showed cracks and voids on the EPDM surface. The 20% decomposition temperature of the EPDM rubber sample was investigated by TGA, and it was found to be about $435.23^{\circ}C$ for the EPDM rubber irradiated for 10 min. The crosslinking density of the EPDM rubber was determined by measuring the degree of swelling, and the highest value was observed for the E5 sample irradiated for 5 min. The degree of swelling of the E10 sample irradiated for 10 min was lower than that of the E5 sample. These results indicate that when irradiated with microwaves for more than a certain time, desulfurization occurs and the side chain of the EPDM rubber dissociates and forms additional crosslinking bonds.

Large displacement and rigidity about rubber component are expected by nonlinear and large deformation analysis in this study. Rubber is also used by the model of Mooney-Rivlin and the self contact between rubbers is established. There is the friction between rigid body and rubber, wall and floor. The nonlinear simulation analysis used in this study is expected to be widely applied in design, analysis and development of several rubber components which are used in automotive, railroad, and mechanical elements etc. By utilizing this method, time and cost can also be saved in developing new rubber product. The analysis of rubber components requires special material modeling and non-linear finite element analysis tools that are quite different from those used for metallic parts. The objective of this study is to analyze the rubber component with large deformation and non-linear properties.
