  • Room temperature vulcanizing(RTV)silicone rubber has been widely used to coat porcelain insulators to render water repellency to prevent formation of water filming on the surface and thus to suppress the leakage current and consequent flashover. However, the electrical property and its hydrophobicity of RTV silicone rubber coating under outdoor conditions may be influenced by many environmental factors. In this study various treatments, such as salt-fog, salt water immerging and UV irradiation were applied to samples for investigation the change of the electrical property and hydrophobicity. As a result the leakage current increased and contact angle decreased as the degradation time longer. But the degraded RTV silicone rubber has recovered its hydrophobicity during the drying time in ambient condition because LMW(Low Molecular Weight)silicone fluid diffused from the bulk to the surface.

  • Vehicle wiper blades are typically treated with chlorine to lower their friction coefficient with the windshield surface. In this study, a chlorinated, natural rubber (NR) vehicle wiper blade was characterized using a pyrolytic technique. Unchlorinated and chlorinated wiper blades were pyrolyzed and the pyrolysis products were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Besides isoprene and dipentene, the other principal pyrolysis products such as 1,5,8-p-menthatriene (MTT) and p,α-dimethylstyrene (DMS) were observed. The MTT and DMS ratios did not vary for the chlorinated nor unchlorinated samples when the entire rubber lip of the wiper blade was pyrolyzed. However, when only the lip surface of the wiper blade rubber was pyrolyzed (via scratching with a knife) the relative ratios of the chlorinated sample were much greater than those of the unchlorinated sample. As MTT is produced from the conjugated backbone of chlorinated NR that forms through HCl elimination during initial pyrolysis, and DMS is generated by the dehydrogenation of MTT, these two products could be used as markers for detecting chlorinated NR.

  • Disinfection of dental impressions are necessary due to contamination with patient’s saliva and blood, which is a potential for cross-infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of disinfection of four hydrophilic rubber impression materials with three disinfecting solutions, on the dimensional stability and surface hardness of improved stone casts. Three hydrophilic vinyl polysiloxane impression materials(Express, Reprosil, Exafine) and one polyether impression material(Impregum-F) were mixed according to the manufacturer’s directions and impressions were made on a ADA specification No. 19 stainless-steeldie. On removal of the impressions, each impression was immersed in one of the disinfectants(Banicide, Potadine, Clorox) for 10 minutes. After disinfection, type IV improved stone. casts were poured. On this cast, the linear dimension and surface hardness were measuredusing a Measurescope(Nikon, Japan) and a Barcol hardness tester(Barber, Colman Co U. S. A). The results were as follows : 1. The improved stone casts from disinfected Reprosil and Impregum-F impression material did not show dimensional changes(P>0.01). Those from disinfected Express and Exafine impression material showed dimensional changes(P<0.01). The amount of shrinkage was not clinically significant. 2. The improved stone casts from disinfected Express impression material did not exhibit changes in surface hardness(P>0.01), but those from disinfected Reprosil, Exafine, Imp regnum-F impression material showed changes in surface hardness(P<0.01). 3. The dimensinal stability and surface hardness of the improved stone casts were satisfactory using Banicide on Express, all disinfectants used in this study on Reprosil, Potadin and Clorox on Exafine, Banicide and Clorox on Impregum-F. According to these results, immersion disinfection of hydrophilic rubber impression mate rials did not adversely affect the resultant casts. Nevertheless compatibility tests of impression materials and disinfectants should be done when disinfecting impressions.

  • Properties of carbon blacks and carbon black/SBR rubber composites filled by surface modified carbon blacks were examined. Although the specific surface area of carbon blacks increased after the surface modifications with heat, acid, and base, there were no obvious changes in resistivity. The composites filled by heat treated carbon blacks showed a higher tensile strength and elongation than those filled by raw blacks. The acid and base treated carbon blacks filled composites also showed higher tensile strength but similar elongation values with those filled by raw blacks. With increasing loading ratio, both tensile strength and elongation increased, and appeared a maximum value at 30-40 phr. Modulus at 300% strain remained increasing with further loading of carbon blacks. At the same loading, the heat treated black filled composites showed similar modulus values with composites filled by raw blacks but for base and acid treated black filled composites much higher values were obtained. After the surface modification, the functional groups which played an important role in reinforcement action were changed.

  • In this paper, the effect of adhesion properties of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber on electrical properties was investigated. The modifications produced on the silicone surface by oxygen plasma were accessed using ATR-FTIR, contact angle and AFM. Adhesion was obtained from T-peel tests of semiconductive layer having different treatment durations. In addition, ac breakdown test was carried out for elucidating the change of electrical property with duration of plasma treatment. From the results, the treatment in the oxygen plasma produced a noticeable increase in surface energy, which can be mainly ascribed to the the creation of O-H and C=O. It is observed that adhesion performance was determined by not surface energy but roughness level of silicone surface. It is found that ac dielectric strength was increased with improving the adhesion between the semiconductive and insulating interface.

  • Silica-filled rubber compounds have slower cure characteristics than carbon black-filled ones due to the adsorption of curatives on the silica surface. Fatty acid was used as a cure activator along with zinc oxide in a sulfur cure system. Poly(ethylene glycol), PEG, was used in silica-filled rubber compounds to prevent adsorption of the curatives on the silica surface. In this study, influence of the size of fatty acid and PEG on properties of silica-filled NR compounds was investigated. It was found that the size of fatty acid and PEG affected the curt: characteristics and physical properties. The cure rate becomes faster as the PEG size increases. By increasing the size of fatty acid or PEG, the delta torque of the compound decreases while the Mooney viscosity increases. The modulus of the vulcanizate decreases with increasing the molecular weight of fatty acid or PEG. The experimental results were explained by the filler dispersion and by the prevention of the curative-adsorption on the silica surface.

  • This study made a specimen (contact surface size: $45\;mm{\times}0.02\;mm{\times}45{\sim}55\;mm$) with silicon rubber for low voltage cable with 50 phr silica filler. The electrification voltage of electrostatics were measured for different sizes of contact surface with the applied voltage of 10kV and the environmental settings of temperature ($25{\sim}40^{\circ}C$) and humidity (40~80%). The following conclusions were made. The electrification voltage of electrostatics decreased as the humidity increased. The electrification voltage of electrostatics increased as the temperature increased. The larger the surface size, the higher the electrification voltage of electrostatics. The property of the material had more effect on the relaxation time than the humidity.

  • A small amount of Duco cement or Elmer's clear cement was dropped on a slide glass and immediately spread with a glass rod or woden stick a thin film on the surface. After approximately 1 minute a small amount of rubber cement was spread on the top of the film of Duco cement using the same method as described earlier. It was important that the rubber cement be smeared before the Duco cement dried out. These two kinds of cements must not be mixed. It was better to make the film of the rubber cement slightly thicker than the film of Duco cement. This composite film may be used up to several months after preparation. The sample leaf was placted on the slide, prepared with adhesive and the leaf surface was passed on the film with the thumb. The pressing was done so the leaf surface was completely in contact with the film. Then the leaf was peeled from the slide.
