  • In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated a low loss $1{\times}4$ type plastic optical fiber(POF) coupler incorporating a polymer tapering waveguide region. To avoid leakage loss at the interfaces between the POF and the polymer waveguide, we employed two POF transition regions, in which the cross section of the POF is adiabatically converted from a circular to a rectangular shape without change of its cross-section area. The device was fabricated based on a injection mold made of a silicon rubber. The fabricated POF coupler showed 1.33 dB of excess loss and 2.2 dB of flatness.

  • Combat vehicles are frequently maneuvered in battlefields when the lives of combatants are being threatened. These vehicles are important elements that influence the consequences of a battle. Their armor must be lightweight and provide excellent protection to ensure successful operations. Ceramic composite armor has recently been developed by many countries to fulfill these requirements. We reviewed previous research to determine an effective armor design, and then fabricated a composite armor structure using $Al_2O_3$ and glass fiber-reinforced polymer. Specimens were manufactured under controlled conditions using different backing plate thicknesses and bonding methods for the ceramic layer and the backing plate. The penetration of an armor-piercing bullet was evaluated from ballistic protection tests. The bonding method between the ceramic layer and the fiber-reinforced polymer influenced the ballistic protection performance. A bonding layer using rubber provided the best protection.

  • In recent times, the demand for electronic devices has increased because of advancements in the electronics industry. Consequently, research on shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) from electronic devices has also progressed significantly. In particular, research on imparting electrical conductivity to plastic has seen substantial progress. In this study, the effect of hybrid fillers comprising carbon fiber (CF) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the electrical properties of polyamide 66 (PA66) composites was investigated. PA66 composites were prepared using a BUSS Co-Kneader single-screw extruder. EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) increased with the increasing addition of unsized CF (UCF), sized CF (SCF), and CNTs. For the PA66/SCF/CNT hybrid filler composites, EMI SE significantly increased with the increase in SCF content. Finally, the hybrid filler comprising SCF and CNTs may have a synergistic effect on the EMI SE and surface resistivity of PA66/SCF/CNT composites.

  • In this study, we evaluated genotoxicity of heavy metals among particulates with Tradescantia-micronucleus (Trad-MCN) assay in the various working environment. In a synthetic fiber factory and a rubber factory, chromium concentration was higher than any other heavy metals. On the other hand, nickel concentration was the highest in a semi-conductor factory. The difference in genotoxicity among the working environment was statistically significant as Trad-MCN frequencies were 4.07 $\pm$0.35 MCN/100 tetrads (p< 0.01) for the synthetic fiber factory,5.73 $\pm$0.81 MCN/100 tetrads (p< 0.01) for the rubber factory, and 15.60$\pm$2.58 (p< 0.01) (p< 0.001) for the semi -conductor factory. As a result, heavy metals among particulates in the working environment can be considered to have hazardous potential to human health, although they cannot directly induce DNA damage to the workers in the working environments.

  • The improved movable weir supplements the advantages and disadvantages of the rubber weir and the conduction gate. It consists of a stainless steel gate, air bags, and a steel clamping plate. The stainless steel gate is the main body of the weir, and the inflatable rubber sheet serves to support the steel gate. The steel clamping plate is typically in direct continuous contact with water, but this leads to corrosion issues that can reduce the life of the entire movable weir. In this study, a panel-type glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) clamping plate was designed and fabricated. The test results showed that the flexural load of the panel-type GFRP composite clamping plate was over twice that of the wings type GFRP clamping plate. The lowest moisture absorption value was obtained upon exposure to tap water, and exposure to other solutions showed similar values. Additionally, flexural load testing after exposure to an accelerated environment found the lowest residual loads of 80.51 % and 78.50 % at 50 and 100 days, respectively, for exposure to a $CaCl_2$ solution, while exposure to other environments showed residual failure loads of over 80 % at both 50 and 100 days.

  • Traditionally, lead has been primarily used to shield the radiation in the hospital, because of its soft texture, durability and cost effectiveness. However, lead can be dangerous because of its toxicity when exposed to the human body, and it is classified as a heavy metal like cadmium, mercury, and arsenic etc. In order to compensate its noxious properties on the human body, researchers are trying to develop a radiation shield which has similar shielding efficiency and can also be manufactured in any form. In this study, sulfuric acid barium was mixed with fiber, rubber, and silicon all of which are harmless to the human body, tested, and evaluated for its ability of medical radiation shield. The result of this study showed that the sheet containing silicon and barium has the strongest shielding abilities.

  • A jute fiber surface was modified with argon gas in a cylinder type RF plasma generator to enhance the interfacial bond strength and to optimize the plasma treatment condition. The plasma power, gas pressure, and treat time were varied to figure out any effect of those parameters on the morphology and mechanical strength of jute fibers, and the interfacial bond strength for a model composite with polypropylene resin. As the severity of plasma treatment was increased, the surface of jute fibers became rougher. Gas pressure was less effective in roughening of the surface compared with those of treat time and plasma power. Approximately 25% drop in tensile strength of jute fibers was observed for the parameters of treat time and plasma power, while little deterioration was found for gas pressure, with increasing the severity. Based on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS), the optimum plasma treatment condition was determined to be treat time of 30 s, plasma power of 40 W, and gas pressure of 30 mTorr.

  • The mechanical properties of PTFE 100%, PTFT 90% + carbon black 10%, PTFE 85% + glass fiber 15%, PTFE 80% + glass fiber 15% + molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) 5%, PTFE 75% + glass fiber 25%, and PTFE 75% + carbon black 18% + graphite 7% composites were investigated in this study. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to examine the heat of fusion(${\Delta}H_f$) and thermal stability of the composites. Also, the wear surface and wear volume of PTFE lip seal were examined using the durability test. Wear surface was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the hardness, wear resistance and durability were enhanced by adding glass fiber and molybdenum disulfide into pure PTFE, but tensile strength and elongation were decreased. According to the experimental results, the composite (PTFE + 15% glass fiber + 5% molybdenum disulfide) showed the best properties for applying to oil-seal among six types of PTFE composites.

  • This paper describes the countermeasures for preventing the electric shock which can be occurred in the low-voltage handhole underwater. Low-voltage handholes were designed and made for the test in the testing field. Which were installed 4 cases. a metal handhole cover was employed in case 1; FRP(Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) handhole cover in case 2; an insulated rubber was put on the joint of the cables in case 3; the exposed conductors(cover, frame etc) were commoned and grounded in case 4. Thus, an ground potential near the low-voltage handhole was measured and evaluated quantitatively for the 4 cases. The measured results show that the potential of case 2.3 were lower than that of case 1 because the insulated rubber and the FRP cover prevented direct contact to the fault point. The case 4 is the lowest among the 4 cases because the common and grounding helps the fault current release into the ground, which makes the ground potential rise lower. As a result, although each case has the defects, these ways can effectively lower the electric shock risk in the low-voltage handhole.
