  • If a sky-bridge is rigidly connected to adjacent buildings, the irregularity of the connected structures is increased resulting in providing a worse seismic behavior. Therefore, a friction pendulum system (FPS) or lead rubber bearing (LRB) is frequently used for the connection system between a sky-bridge and building structures. These connection systems should be carefully designed to prevent a skyfall of a sky-bridge subjected to severe seismic loads. In this paper, the inevitable structural design procedures for a sky-bridge connection system using a friction pendulum system without uplift resistance capacity have been investigated. To this end, Nuri Dream Square building structure is used as a example structure. The structural design process of a friction pendulum system for fail safe of a sky-bridge has been proposed in this paper by evaluating structural responses of the sky-bridge and building structures subjected to earthquake loads.

  • This paper presents a design of a tuned liquid mass damper(TLMD) for controlling bi-directional response of high-rise building structure subjected to windload. The proposed damper behaves as a tuned mass damper(TMD) of which mass is regarded as the mass of a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) and the case wall of the TLCD itself in one direction and the TLCD in the other direction. Because the proposed device has coupled design parameter along two orthogonal directions, it is very important to select designing components by optimal fine tuning. In the designing TLMD, for easy maintenance, the rubber-bearing with small springs was applied in TMD direction. In this study, the Songdo New City Tower 1A in Korea, which has been designed and constructed two TLCDs in order to control bi-directional response, was chosen as the model building structure. The results of rotation test proved the effectiveness of bi-directional behavior of TLMD.

  • This study presents the effects of the spatial variation of ground motions in a hard rock site on the seismic responses of a base-isolated nuclear power plant (BI-NPP). Three structural models were studied for the BI-NPP supported by different number of lead rubber bearing (LRB) base isolators with different base mat dimensions. The seismic responses of the BI-NPP were analyzed and investigated under the uniform and spatial varying excitation of El Centro ground motion. In addition, the rotational degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the base mat nodes were taken to consider the flexural behavior of the base mat on the seismic responses under both uniform and spatial varying excitation. Finally, the seismic response results for all the analysis cases of the BI-NPP were investigated in terms of the vibration periods and mode shapes, lateral displacements, and base shear forces. The analysis results indicate that: (1) considering the flexural behavior of the base mat has a negligible effect on the lateral displacements of base isolators regardless of the number of the isolators or the type of excitation used; (2) considering the spatial variation of ground motions has a substantial influence on the lateral displacements of base isolators and the NPP stick model; (3) the ground motion spatial variation effect is more prominent on lateral displacements than base shear forces, particularly with increasing numbers of base isolators and neglecting flexural behavior of the base mat.

  • For the early seismic isolation design in Korea, foreign products of isolation bearings were used. But these days, the application of domestic products of isolation bearings is increasing. However various experimental studies can be found very seldom on the extreme and lonr term behaviors of isolation bearings. In this study, we considered the laminated rubber type isolation bearings that have many application cases in Korea and we evaluated their shear strength, long term characteristics such as aging and creep affecting shear strength of bearings in long term period. For the reality of experiments, fabricated isolation bearing specimens are designed for a real structure and shear loading was applied under design compressive loads. To evaluated aging effect, the specimens were exposed to high temperature environment for certain period and their shear properties were measured to compare with their original values. Also we measured creep amount of isolation bearings under constant compressive load for 1,000 hours and estimated creep amount after 60 years compatible with general life cycle of bridges.

  • The bridge bearings are devices absorbing the displacements of the superstructure. KS F 4420 relative to the design of elastomeric bearings in Korea allows shear deformation up to 70% of total rubber height. For the elastomeric bearings to fulfill their shear function required in the design, the stability of allowable shear strain of elastomeric bearings relative to the shear failure should be guaranteed. Moreover considering the possibility that elastomeric bearings are applied to the seismic design together with isolation devices, elastomeric bearings is supposed to display higher shear performance. In this paper ultimate shear performance tests were performed. The measured ultimate shear strains were over 200%. Therefore an allowable shear strain provision becomes safe. But elastomeric bearings expected to show their performance in one united body reveled the separation of components near 200% shear strain. These separation in elastomeric bearing can cause unexpected impact or concentrated stress to bridge system considering to application of seismic design. Therefore provision relevant to separation problem is necessary.

  • In this study, a smart base isolation system has been proposed to reduce dynamic responses of a spacial structure subjected to seismic excitation. MR dampers and low damping elastomeric bearings were used to compose a smart base isolation system and its vibration control performance has been investigated compared to that of the optimally designed lead-rubber bearing (LRB) isolation system. Control performance of smart base isolation system depends on control algorithm. Fuzzy controller was used in this study to effectively control the spacial structure having a smart base isolation system. Dynamic responses of the spacial structure with isolation system is conflict with base drifts and thus these two responses are selected as objective functions to apply multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimization of fuzzy controller. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been shown that the smart base isolation system proposed in this study can drastically reduce base drifts and seismic responses of the example spacial structure in comparison with the optimally designed LRB isolation system.

  • A series of aromatic poly(hydroxyamide)s (PHAs) containing varying oligo(oxyethylene) substituents and 1,3-phenylene imide ring unit in the main chain were synthesized by the direct polycondensation reaction. The inherent viscosities of the PHAs exhibited in the range of 0.89~1.12 dL/g in DMAc or DMAc/LiCl solution. The PH-2~5 copolymers were easily soluble in strong aprotic solvents: DMAc, NMP, DMSO etc. and the PH-5 copolymer was soluble in less polar solvents such as m-creasol and pyridine with LiCl salt on heating. However, all PBOs were quite insoluble in other solvents, but only partially soluble in sulfuric acid. All copolymers (PH-2~5) could afford the flexible and tough films by solution casting. We identified that the PHAs were converted to the PBOs by the thermal cyclization reaction in the range of $200{\sim}380^{\circ}C$. The 10% weight loss temperatures and char yields of the PBOs were recorded in the range of $382{\sim}647^{\circ}C$ and 38.7~73.1% values at $900^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength and initial modulus of the PH-5 in the copolmers showed the highest values of 2.46 GPa and 49.55 MPa, respectively. The LOI values of the PHAs were in the range 26.6~29.0%, and increased with increasing 1,3-phenylene imide ring unit.

  • The various systems as the seismic resistance systems are used to reduce the seismic response of structure. And the seismic isolation system among them is the system that reduces the seismic vibration to be transmitted from foundation to upper structure. The purpose of isolation system is to lengthen the period of structure and make its period shift from the dominant period of earthquake. In this study, the seismic behavior of arch structure with lead rubber bearing(LRB) and friction pendulum system(FPS) is analyzed. The arch structure is the simplest structure and has the basic dynamic characteristics among large spatial structures. Also, Large spatial structures have large vertical response by horizontal seismic vibration, unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When horizontal seismic load is applied to the large spatial structure with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the large spatial structure is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced.

  • This study was originated to investigate the imparired parts of the mist and dust blowers and intended to analyze the causes of their failures by the use of the Weibull probability paper. By the use of the paper, the parts which were needed to change the design, the force of the urgency, the mean time between failures of the parts and the basic causes of the troubles could be predicted. The survey showed that the following parts got out of order: (A) flexible rubber hose, (B) blowing fan, (C) lead valve, (D) piston ring. (E) crank main bearing, (F) coil in magneto and (G) needle valve in carburettor. The analysis of the survey indicated that the parts G, C, E and D were belonged to "wear-out failure", and that the mean time between failures became shorter in order as indicated above. To insure longer lives of those parts, it would be necessary to change the design and the material and to upgrade operators mechanical technique of the mist and dust blower. The failure of the parts A, B and F was classified as "randomfailure", and they did not seem to be the "wear-out" at that time. The parts B and F was evaluated as "initial failure". Quality controls and operating tests by the producer. and the operational training for users should be strengthened so as to eliminate these failures. Were the failures only in the parts A, C, D, E, F and G, it could be said that the "reliability" of the mist and dust blower would fall to 10 percent in the second year, and 50 percent of the mist and dust blowers would fail in all parts A, C, D, E, F and G before the blower would have control insect and disease in 58.2 hectares. The use of the Weibull probability paper for analyzing failures of the mist and dust blowers was effective in that it analyzed failure in the relationship between strength of the parts and users actual circumstanoes.

  • This study has addressed to evaluate the effects of radius of curvature and skew angle on the negative reaction in a plate girder bridge with LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) supports. As analytical parameters, various radius of curvatures and skew angles were selected and two seismic loads of El-Centro and artificial earthquakes were applied to the bridge in the longitudinal and transverse directions. As results of 3D analysis, the possibility of negative reaction is shown at the part of acute angle and inner side of the curved bridge, and becomes increased when seismic load is applied in the transverse direction. In addition, the occurrence of negative reaction is found to be increased as both radius of curvature and skew angle decrease, which means that curved bridge has higher possibility of negative reaction than straight one. Conclusively, all of earthquake wave, gradient, radius of curvature and skew angle should be considered together to investigate the possibility of negative reaction at the bridge support subject to seismic load.
