An Experimental Study on the Variation of Vertical Dispersion within Boundary Layer with Surface Roughness (대기 경계층 연직방향 확산의 지면 거칠기에 따른 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study has been carried out using a rotating water channel in order to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the vertical dispersion of plume within boundary layer. Dispersion measurements of tracers released from two sources with different height at neutral conditions over various rough terrain ranging from rural to urban have been performed. Various values of roughness length were simulated by combining of 4 stream velocities and 3 roughness element conditions. Dispersion measurements have also been made for rough terrain where high buildings are locally concentrated. Values of $\sigma$z increase with roughness and this tendency appears to apply both cases of with and without locally concentrated high buildings. The comparisons of the Bowne's nomogram on $\sigma$2 vs x relationship and the measurements of $\sigma$2 with roughness show good accordance in $\sigma$2 distribution at stability D class over rural, suburban and urban terrain. For constant roughness length the $\sigma$2 values of plumes from lower source height are smaller than those of plumes from higher source at short downwind distance, but this relationship becomes reverse as distance increases. Crossing appears to be made before about 2km. The value of constant I in McMullen's equation $\sigma$2=exp [I+J(In x) + K(In x)2] appears to increase with roughness length, however, the relationships between other constants and roughness have been confirmed. The values of $\sigma$2 for various downwind distances, estimated by using an equation which is employed in ISC (Industrial Source Complex) dispersion model for areas where high buildings are locally assembled, are in accordance with measurements from water channel experiments.

A study on the vibration cutting of high-hardness mold steel (고경도 금형강의 진동 가공에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, we designed an vibration cutting tool that can achieve improvements such as low cutting force, interrupted chip evacuation and better surface quality of cutting performance to obtain high-quality surface roughness and improvement of tool wear, which is an issue in the machining of high-hardness mold steel. Among the resonance frequency modes of the vibration cutting tool, the bending mode was used to maximize the driving amplitude of the vibration tool tip, and the resonance frequency was confirmed through the finite element method. After measuring the actual resonant frequency of the designed tool using an optical fiber sensor, the cutting force and machining surface of vibration cutting and conventional cutting were compared and analyzed in the turning process of high hardness mold steel (STAVAX). As a result of the experiment, the cutting force was reduced by about 20 % compared to the conventional cutting process, and the surface roughness was also improved by about 60 %. This study suggested that the tool wear and surface quality of high-hardness steel can be improved through the vibration cutting method in the machining of high hardness mold steel.

  • The present study deals with the flow over a flat plate with repeated roughness elements of 2-dimensional rectangular shape, which can be applied into the study on the natural geographical roughness and the turbulent flow on roughened solid surface. Experiment was performed using PIV technique in the circulating water channel. Results showed that the flow over roughness elements was characterized by the high shear flow emanating from top of roughness element and the recirculating region formed at the trough of two roughness elements. In general, the ratio between the spacing and the height of roughness elements plays a crucial role in developing the flow pattern near wall surface.

  • In order to find the effect of lubricant viscosity, tool geometry, forming speed, and sheet material properties on the friction in the sheet metal forming, friction tests were performed. Friction test results show that as the lubricant viscosity becomes lower, the friction coefficient is higher. When surface roughness is extremely low or high, the friction coefficient is high. The bigger die corner radii and punch speed are, the smaller is the friction coefficient. From the experimental observation, the friction model which is the mathematical expression of friction coefficient in terms of lubricant viscosity, roughness and hardness of sheet surface, punch corner radius, and punch speed is constructed. By comparing the punch load found by FEM using the proposed friction model with that obtained from the experiment in 2-D stretch forming, the validity and accuracy of the friction model are demonstrated.

  • Turbine blade has trouble of cracking at root region. Fracture surface of blade root is surveyed by SEM and AFM to clear relation between fracture mechanical parameter and surface parameter (striation width and surface roughness). Service stress is predicted by maximum height roughness $R_{max}$, on fractured surface and stress analysis on turbine blade. It is to thought that turbine blade is fractured by abnormal condition such as incorrect fittings between pin and pin hole but isn't fractured by normal service conditions such as steam pressure, centrifugal force and torsional force.

  • Surface characteristics of HA(hydroxyapatite) coated dental implant alloy by Sol-Gel method were investigated using potentiostat, ICP, SEM, EDX, EPMA and surface roughness tester. Surface roughness of HA coated specimen by Sol-Gel showed higher than that of PVD coated specimen. Corrosion resistance increased in the order of $1\%$ lactic acid, artificial saliva, $0.5\%$ HCI and $0.9\%$ NaCl solution. Amount of Ca element release was higher than that of V and P in the $0.5\%$ HCI and $0.9\%$ NaCl solution.

  • During the turning of the workpiece, cutting heat causes thermal deformation of the cutting tool which influences the surface characteristics of the machined part. This paper presents a study of thermal deformation of the cutting tool. For this purpose, cutting tool is modeled based on Pro/Engineering and temperature and deformation are simulated by means of the finite element method. The thermal effect on the surface roughness profile is simulated by using surface-shaping system.

  • Turbine blade is subject to torsional load by torsion-mount, centrifugal load by rotation of rotor and repeated bending load by steam pressure. Turbine with partially cracked blade has normal working condition at initial repair time but vibratory working condition at middle repair time due to crack growth. Finite element analysis on turbine blade indicates that repeated bending load out of all loads is the most important factor on fatigue strength of turbine blade. Therefore, this study shows root mean square roughness has linear relation with stress intensity factor range in 12% Cr steel and can predict loading condition of fractured turbine blade.

  • In the field of aircraft icing prediction, surface roughness has been considered as critical factor because it enhances convective heat transfer and changes local collection efficiency. For this significance, experimental studies have been conducted to acquire the quantitative data of the formation process. Meanwhile, these experiments was conducted under low-speed condition due to the measurement difficulties. However, it has not been investigated that how the flow characteristic of low-speed will effects to the surface roughness. Therefore, the present study conducted experiment under low-speed icing condition, and analyzed the relation between surface roughness characteristics and icing condition. As an analysis method, the dominant parameters used in the previous high-speed experiments are employed, and roughness characteristics are compared. The size of roughness element was consistent with the previous known tendency, but not the smooth zone width.
