  • In this paper, ‘gesture’ is discussed as a means of human-friendly communication between man and machine. We classify various gestures into two Categories: ‘contact based’ and ‘non-contact based’ Each method is reviewed and some real applications are introduced. Also, key design issues of the method are addressed and some contributions of soft-computing techniques, such as fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks (ANN), rough set theory and evolutionary computation, are discussed.

  • Proficiency in creating a knowledge base is required for high accuracy fuzzy control. To overcome this a fuzzy inference method is proposed that take these membership functions from the probability densities showing the distribution of the mesurement values. And a method using a rough fuzzy knowledge base automatically created from the basic measurement data and tuned using the gradient method is proposed. In actual tests, these were applied to automatic high accuracy adjustment devices for magnetic head and for high frequency circuits with good results.

  • This paper suggests an integrated method based on rough sets for discovering useful knowledge from a large databse. Our approach applies attribute-oriented concept hierarchy ascension technique to extract generalized data from actual data in database, induction of decision trees to measure the information gain, and knowledge reduction method of rough set theory to remove superfluous attributes and attribute values. The integrated algorithm first reduces the size of database through the concept generalization, reduces the number of attributes by means of eliminating condition attributes which have little influence on decision attribute, and finally induces simplified decision rules by removing the superfluous attribute values by analyzing the dependency relationships among the attributes.

  • To cope with the complex electromagnetic environment of wireless communication systems, anti-jamming decision methods are necessary to keep the reliability of communication. Basing on the rule-reduced genetic algorithm (RRGA), an anti-jamming decision method is proposed in this paper to adapt to the fast channel variations. Firstly, the reduced decision rules are obtained according to the rough set (RS) theory. Secondly, the randomly generated initial population of the genetic algorithm (GA) is screened and the individuals are preserved in accordance with the reduced decision rules. Finally, the initial population after screening is utilized in the genetic algorithm to optimize the communication parameters. In order to remove the dependency on the weights, this paper deploys an anti-jamming decision objective function, which aims at maximizing the normalized transmission rate under the constraints of minimizing the normalized transmitting power with the pre-defined bit error rate (BER). Simulations are carried out to verify the performance of both the traditional genetic algorithm and the adaptive genetic algorithm. Simulation results show that the convergence rates of the two algorithms increase significantly thanks to the initial population determined by the reduced-rules, without losing the accuracy of the decision-making. Meanwhile, the weight-independent objective function makes the algorithm more practical than the traditional methods.

  • This paper deals with simplification of classification rules for data mining and rule bases for control systems. Datamining that extracts useful information from such a large amount of data is one of important issues. There are various ways in classification methodologies for data mining such as the decision trees and neural networks, but the result should be explicit and understandable and the classification rules be short and clear. The rough sets theory is an effective technique in extracting knowledge from incomplete and inconsistent data and provides a good solution for classification and approximation by using various attributes effectively This paper investigates granularity of knowledge for reasoning of uncertain concopts by using rough set approximations and uses a hierarchical classification structure that is more effective technique for classification by applying core to upper level. The proposed classification methodology makes analysis of an information system eary and generates minimal classification rules.

  • These days data is being collected and accumulated in a wide variety of fields. Stored data itself is to be an information system which helps us to make decisions. An information system includes many kinds of necessary and unnecessary attribute. So many algorithms have been developed for finding useful patterns from the data and reasoning approximately new objects. We are interested in the simple and understandable rules that can represent useful patterns. In this paper we propose an algorithm which can reduce the information in the system to a minimum, based on a probabilistic rough set theory. The proposed algorithm uses a value that tolerates accuracy of classification. The tolerant value helps minimizing the necessary attribute which is needed to reason a new object by reducing conditional attributes. It has the advantage that it reduces the time of generalizing rules. We experiment a proposed algorithm with the IRIS data and Wisconsin Breast Cancer data. The experiment results show that this algorithm retrieves a small reduct, and minimizes the size of the rule under the tolerant classification rate.

  • For the design of human-centered systems in which a human and machine such as a robot form a human-in system, human-friendly interaction/interface is essential. Human-friendly interaction is possible when the system is capable of recognizing human biosigns such as5 EMG Signal, hand gesture and facial expressions so the some humanintention and/or emotion can be inferred and is used as a proper feedback signal. In the talk, we report our experiences of applying the Soft computing techniques including Fuzzy, ANN, GA and rho rough set theory for efficiently recognizing various biosigns and for effective inference. More specifically, we first observe characteristics of various forms of biosigns and propose a new way of extracting feature set for such signals. Then we show a standardized procedure of getting an inferred intention or emotion from the signals. Finally, we present examples of application for our model of rehabilitation robot named.

  • This study suggests an integrated method based on concept hierarchies, information gain, and rough set theory for efficient discovery rules from a large amount of data, and implements an optimal rules discovery system. Our approach applies attribute-oriented concept ascension technique to extract generalized knowledge from a database, knowledge reduction technique to remove superfluous attributes and attribute values, and significance of attributes to induce optimal rules. The system first reduces the size of database by removing the duplicate tuples through the condition attributes which have no influences on the decision attributes, and finally induces simplified optimal rules by removing the superfluous attribute values by analyzing the dependency relationships among the attributes. And we induce some decision rules from actual data by using the system and test rules to new data, and evaluate that the rules are well suited to them.

  • A method for estimating the effectiveness of each protective action against a nuclear accident has been proposed using the fuzzy set theory. In most of the existing countermeasure models in actions under radiological emergencies, the large variety of possible features is simplified by a number of rough assumptions. During this simplification procedure, a lot of information is lost which results in much uncertainty concerning the output of the countermeasure model. Furthermore, different assumptions should be used for different sites to consider the site specific conditions. Tn this study, the diversity of each variable related to protective action has been modelled by the linguistic variable. The effectiveness of sheltering and evacuation has been estimated using the proposed method. The potential advantage of the proposed method is in reducing the loss of information by incorporating the opinions of experts and by introducing the linguistic variables which represent the site specific conditions.
