Comparison of Carotenoid Pigments in Korean Bittering, Cheilognathus signifer and Bride Bittering, Rhodeus ukekii in the Subfamily Cyprinidae (잉어아과에 속하는 묵납자루와 각시붕어의 Carotenoid 색소성분의 비교)

  • Differences in carotenoid composition in the integument of Korean bittering, Cheilognathus signifer and bride bittering, Rhodeus ukekii which are Korean native fresh water fish were compared. Total ca rotenoid contents in the integument of wild Korean bittering was 2.11mg% and composed of 42.6% zeaxanthin, 12.1% diatoxanthin and 12.1% lutein epoxide which are predominant carotenoids and 10.3% cynthiaxanthin, 8.3% zeaxanthin epoxide, 6.4% lutein and 1.5% cryptoxanthin which are minor carotenoids. Total ca rotenoid contents in the integument of wild bride bittering was 4.99mg% during a spawning period but after the spawning period it was decreased to 4.17mg% and carotenoid composition of bride bittering during the spawning period was 46.7% zeaxanthin, 26.5% diatoxanthin and 12.3% lutein which are predominant carotenoids, and 6.2% zeaxanthin epoxide, 3.1% cynthiaxanthin, 2.9% cryptoxanthin and 0.7% canthax anthin which are minor carotenoids. These results indicated that the carotenoid composition of bride bittering during spawning period was very similar to that of Korean bittering and carotenoid composition of bride bittering after the spawning period was 30.5% diatoxanthin, 21.5% cynthiaxanthin and 16.8% zeaxanthin which are predominant carotenoids and 14.0% cryptoxanthin, 11.3% lutein and 3.4% can thaxanthin which are minor carotenoids, indicating that after the spawning period, the content of zeaxanthin was decreased while that of cryptoxanthin and cynthiaxanthin was increased as compared to that of the spawning period. Total carotenoid contents in Korean bittering and bride bittering was relatively higher than that in other species of cyprinidae whereas composition of the carotenoid was similar.

Boeravinone B, a natural rotenoid, inhibits osteoclast differentiation through modulating NF-κB, MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways

  • Osteoporosis is a major public health concern, which requires novel therapeutic strategies to prevent or mitigate bone loss. Natural compounds have attracted attention as potential therapeutic agents due to their safety and efficacy. In this study, we investigated the regulatory activities of boeravinone B (BOB), a natural rotenoid isolated from the medicinal plant Boerhavia diffusa, on the differentiation of osteoclasts and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the two main cell components responsible for bone remodeling. We found that BOB inhibited osteoclast differentiation and function, as determined by TRAP staining and pit formation assay, with no significant cytotoxicity. Furthermore, our results showing that BOB ameliorates ovariectomy-induced bone loss demonstrated that BOB is also effective in vivo. BOB exerted its inhibitory effects on osteoclastogenesis by downregulating the RANKL/RANK signaling pathways, including NF-κB, MAPK, and PI3K/Akt, resulting in the suppression of osteoclast-specific gene expression. Further experiments revealed that, at least phenomenologically, BOB promotes osteoblast differentiation of bone marrow-derived MSCs but inhibits their differentiation into adipocytes. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that BOB inhibits osteoclastogenesis and promotes osteoblastogenesis in vitro by regulating various signaling pathways. These findings suggest that BOB has potential value as a novel therapeutic agent for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

The Shelf-life of Agricultural Organic Materials Containing Cinnamon or Derris Extract: Thermal Stability of Cinnamyl Derivatives and Rotenoids (계피 또는 데리스 추출물을 주원료로 하는 유기농업자재의 약효 성분 안정성)

  • The stabilities of bioactive compounds in cinnamon or derris extract were investigated in commercial agricultural organic materials (biopesticide) during storage on different temperature conditions ($0^{\circ}C$, $23^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, and $54^{\circ}C$). The selected bioactive compounds were cinnamaldehyde, and cinnamyl alchol in cinnamon extract and deguelin, and rotenone in derris extract. Half-lives of the total cinnamyl derivatives in biopesticide (A, B, C, and D) ranged from 15.1 to 46.2 days on the different temperature and cinnamaldehyde was more stable than cinnamyl alcohol in the biopesticide. The half-lives of total rotenoid ranged from 1.7 to 173 days on the different temperature in the tested biopesticide (E, F, and G) containing derris extract. The stabilities of deguelin, and rotenon in the biopesticide showed similar values in the same condition.
