  • In this study, time-dependent distributions of temperature and stresses, in the box-column welded from ultra thick plates with center segregation, has been analyzed by the commercial finite element package SYSWELD+, for several types and angles of groove. The major points of investigation are the optimum type and angle of groove that minimize weld stress specially at the center segregation, as well as temperature distribution, residual stresses and changes in the mechanical properties. The results can be summarized as follows; 1) Generally the thermal cycle at the root of groove exhibits relatively rapid cooling pattern, however, most of the other part weldment have a slow cooling pattern in all groove types. 2) Most of the micro-structures of weldment are composed of ferrite and pearlite, meanwhile we could find martensite and bainite locally a the root of the groove. 3) Optimum groove type for high heat input welding of box-column corner is a double groove type, and the optimum angle for the groove is 30~$45^{\circ}$ that minimize deformation and weld stress at the center segregation.

  • In most industry, manual GTAW welding is preferred for formation of stable back bead in root weld of butt joint. However, manual GTAW welding has low productivity as compared with GMAW, also it has unstable bead quality which depend on skilled workers. So it is necessary to develop process of root pass welding by using automation GMAW that have stable back bead formation and high productivity. In this paper, the design of U-groove with 3mm root face was applied to extend the tolerance of misalignment in condition of standard root gap 1.5mm. Consequently, for the formation of stable back bead in root pass of butt welding, in case of the narrow root gap(0.5mm) the large arc force was applied by increasing the current and voltage. In case of the large root gap(2.5mm), the small arc force was applied by decreasing the current and voltage. Considering the various root gap, the required deposited metal was controlled by welding speed only.

  • Fracture toughness is an important parameter in designing offshore structures to ensure resistance to fracture at various temperatures. In this study, a series of experiments is carried out to obtain fracture toughness values (CTOD) of API 2W Gr.50B, welded using FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Weld). In particular, a comparison of absorbed impact energy and CTOD values are made with respect to two different welding groove shapes; double-V-groove and double-bevel-groove. Charpy impact tests are performed for specimens sampled near the root gap, and CTOD tests are carried out for three point bending specimens having the notch at weld zone. While Charpy impact test result is determined to be a good qualitative measure of fracture toughness, no quantitative correspondence between impact absorbed energy and CTOD values was found. Based on the experiment, it is observed that double-V-groove welds give lower transition temperature than those of double-bevel-groove.

  • It has been used many kinds of horizontal butt-welding methods at block-to-block erection stage in shipbuilding companies. For examples, some companies use conventional FCA W process with one side or both sides groove joint welding, others use carriage with torch holder type mechanized welding method. Although lots of efforts were done until now, some problems in quality and productivity still remain in ship's hull welding. In this study, we have attempted to raise productivity and quality on horizontal position of welding with following 3 items. 1) Prepare groove condition with no root gap for making easy fit-up work. 2) Develop improved MAG (100% $CO_2$ gas shielding) welding process with solid wire for making sound root bead from one side. 3) Develop and apply quite new automatic welding carriage. The stability of new welding process was confirmed by conducting mechanical tests of weldments to verify the soundness of weldments.

  • A palato-radicular groove (PRG) is a developmental anomaly primarily found in the maxillary lateral incisors. It is a potential communication path between the root canal and the periodontium that decreases the survival prognosis of the affected tooth, therefore compromising the stability of the dental structure in the oral cavity. The aim of this case report is to present an original technique where a PRG was treated by means of intracanal disinfection, PRG sealing with glass ionomer, replantation with intentional horizontal 180 degree rotation of the tooth, and an aesthetic veneer placed to provide adequate tooth morphology. The clinical and biological benefits of this novel technique are presented and discussed.

  • To implement full automation in pipe welding, it si most important to develop special sensors and their related systems which act like human operator when detecting irregular groove conditions. In this study, an automatic pipe Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) system was proposed to full control pipe welding procedure with intelligent sensor systems. A five-axes manipulator was proposed for welding torch to automatically access to exact welding position when pipe size and welding angle were given. Pool status and torch position were measured by using a weld-pool image monitoring and processing technique in root-pass welding for weld seam tracking and weld pool control. To overcome the intensive arc light, pool image was captured at the instance of short circuit of welding power loop. Captured image was processed to determine weld pool shape. For weld seam tracking, the relative distance of a torch position from the pool center was calculated in the extracted pool shape to move torch just onto the groove center. To control penetration of root pas, gap was calculated in the extracted pool image, and then weld conditions were controlled for obtaining appropriate penetration. welding speed was determined with a fuzzy logic, and welding current and voltage were determined from a data base to correspond to the gap. For automatic fill-pass welding, the function of human operator of real time weld seam control can be substituted by a sensor system. In this study, an arc sensor system was proposed based on a fuzzy control logic. Using the proposed automatic system, root-pass welding of pipe which had gap variation was assured to be appropriately controlled in welding conditions and in torch position by showing sound welding result and good seam tracking capability. Fill-pass welding by the proposed system also showed very successful result by tracking along the offset welding line without any control of human operator.
