Manufacturing of printed electronics using printing technology has begun to get into the hot issue in many ways due to the low cost effectiveness to existing semi-conductor process. This technology with both low cost and high productivity, can be applied in the production of organic thin film transistor (OTFT), solar cell, radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, printed battery, E-paper, touch screen panel, black matrix for liquid crystal display (LCD), flexible display, and so forth. The emerging technology to manufacture the products in mass production is roll-to-roll printing technology which is a manufacturing method by printings of multi-layered patterns composed of semi-conductive, dielectric and conductive layers. In contrary to the conventional printing machines in which printing precision is about $50~100{\mu}m$, the printing machines for printed electronics should have a precision under $30{\mu}m$. In general, in order to implement printed electronics, narrow width and gap printing, register of multi-layer printing by several printing units, and printing accuracy of under $30{\mu}m$ are all required. We developed the roll-to-roll printing equipment used for printed electronics, which is composed of un-winder, re-winder, tension measurement system, feeding units, dancer systems, guide unit, printing unit, vision system, dryer units, and various auxiliary devices. The equipment is designed based on cantilever type in which all rollers except printing ones have cantilever types, which could give more accurate machine precision as well as convenience for changing rollers and observing the process.
The production of metal strip with uniform thickness and flatness are two important problems associated thin strip rolling. The thickness and flatness of strip are affected by the flattening of contact surface between strip and roll, the elastic recovery and the bending of roll. Especially, the flatness of the strip is greatly affected by bending deflection of roll. The roll must be designed considered the elastic deformation of roll. This study describes the measurement of thickness and flatness of strip and shows the crown roll for producing flat strip. But it is difficult to produce the crown roller. The cross rolling that is a simple method which can produce the flat strip is introduced and it is found the optimal cross angle for improvement of flatness of plate. These problems are solved by the MARC code on the basis of elastic-plastic material and the updated Lagrangian formulation.
VCR is a back-up roll with a special contour which leads to the length of the contact line between back-up roll and work becones self adjustable in accordance with the width of the strip. The simulation of a finite element model and the on-line test at production mill demonstrate that the VCR roll may keep the crown of the roll gap relatively stable, and at same time, permit the rolling pressure to be adjusted over a wider range, and increase the effect of work roll bending on the roll gap. The VCR rolls have been successfully used at the first stands of two largest cold rolling mills in China, and on-line test has been done at a wide hot strip finishing train. The use of VCR roll has created favorable conditions for subsequent rolling passes and the achievement of better flatness quality.
Recently, there are many issues about R2R printing technique for mass production of electronic devices. Among the various Roll-to-roll based printing techniques such as gravure, off-set, flexo and so on, "Gravure off-set printing technique" has an advantage of higher printing resolution. The printing unit of gravure off-set printing technique usually consists of plate roll, blanket roll and impressure roll whose. Linear velocities should be synchronized each other for fine pattern printing. However, roller's manufacturing error and printing variations such as pringting pressure, printing speed, roll stroke and so on actually affected their synchronization anf thus the quality of fine fattern. In this paper, we analyzed the effective of synchronization error on printing quality. Also, this paper reviews the relative motion with each roll. And, this paper studys the synchronization error about its generation problem.
Roll-to-roll process is an emerging mass production method for printed and flexible electronics such as touch screen panel, RFID tag, thin film solar cell, and flexible display due to its high throughput. High precision in printing and coating is required to apply functional materials onto substrate. For such reason, every part of the roll-to-roll equipment needs to be precisely fabricated and to retain its precision under regular operation. In this article, the precision of cantilever type idler roller and a novel method to mitigate its deflection under web tension loading are discussed and the method is verified using both the numerical and the experimental works. The proposed method improves the structural rigidity of cantilever type roller whose advantages, such as low capital cost and high web path configurability, are maintained.
RFID printing technology has emerged recently as an important tool for leading future IT. Therefore, many manufacturers concerning on low cost and mass production of the related products pay close attention to the printing technology. In order to realize printed electronics, the technologies for fine line-width/gap printing and registration are essential work. This study proposes a precise Roll to Roll control system that is capable of tilting two posts. Two controllable tilting posts can adjust film position at traverse direction for the precision registration. A mathematical model for representing the geometric features of each posts in Roll to Roll printing system is established first. Then an operating program is built to implement the system and to control film movement. For experimental test, a hard ware system is fabricated which is consisted of two AC servo motors, two posts tilting mechanisms, several guide rolls, and so on. The test results show the proposed system can control the film position precisely at transverse direction.
Slot-die coating is well known technique to guarantee a uniformly coated layer and is compatible with roll-to-roll process. In actual roll-to-roll slot-die coating process, the lateral difference of coated layer thickness is observed. An experimental study was performed to improve the coating quality. Coating speed and coating gap were selected as the experimental factors. A full factorial, statistical method was conducted to optimize the process conditions. Based on the results of repeated experiment, the lowest deviation of lateral thickness (700 nm, <10%) was achieved at 10 m/min coating speed and $300{\mu}m$ coating gap. This result has significance because such optimized process guideline can be utilized with all process improvement in various coating applications.
The spring-back and bow phenomenon in the roll forming process are important factors regarding the accuracy of evaluation of production goods. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of spring-back and bow phenomenon according to the main variables (forming velocity and roll gap). The material of the forming sheet was high tension steel (SPFH 590), which has been used commonly in recent years. In order to accurately measure the spring-back and bow phenomenon, the forming sheet was formed into a V-shape. The study was applied to OFAT (One Factor at a Time) experimentation, with respect to the experimental variables (the forming speed and the roll gap). In the experimental results, the forming speed had a small influence on the spring-back and bow phenomenon. However, the roll gap had a greater influence on the springback and the bow phenomenon, as opposed to the forming speed.
Nowadays, most micro-patterns are manufactured during flow line production. However, a conventional rotary chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) system has a limited throughput for the fabrication of large and flexible electronics. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel linear roll-CMP system for the planarization of large-area electronics. In this paper, we present a statistical analysis on the linear roll-CMP process of copper-clad laminate (CCL) to determine the impacts of process parameters on the material removal rate (MRR) and its non-uniformity (NU). In the linear roll-CMP process, process parameters such as the slurry flow rate, roll speed, table feed rate, and down force affect the MRR and NU. To determine the polishing characteristics of roll-CMP, we use Taguchi's orthogonal array L16 (44) for the experimental design and F-values obtained by the analysis of variance (ANOVA). We investigate the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio to identify the prominent control parameters. The "higher is better" for the MRR and "lower is better" for the NU were selected for obtaining optimum CMP performance characteristics. The experimental and statistical results indicate that the down force and roll speed mainly affect the MRR and the down force and table feed rate determine the NU in the linear roll-CMP process. However, over 186.3 N of down force deteriorates the NU because of the bending of substrate. Roll speed has little relationship to the NU and the table feed rate does not impact on the MRR. This study provides information on the design parameter of roll-CMP machine and process optimization.
The prevention of roll breakage in hot rolling process is improtant to reduce maintenance cost and production loss. Rolling conditions such as the roll force and torque have been intensively studied to overcome the roll breakage. in the present work, a model for life prediction of work rolls under working condition was developed and discussed. The model consists of stress analysis, crack propagation, wear and fatigue calculation model. Roll life can be predicted by stress, crack depth and fatigue damage calculated from this model. The reliability of stress analysis is backed up by the FEM analysis. From the result of simulation using by pressent model, although the fatigue damage of back up roll reachs 80% of practical limit, that of workroll was less than 40%. In edge section of workroll stress amplification is found by wear and bender effect. We can judge that workroll failures are not due to fatigue damage, crack propagation by bending stress but stress amplification by wear and bender in present working condition.
