  • In order to verify the reliability of numerical site response analysis program, both soil free-field and base rock input motions should be provided. Beside the field earthquake motion records, the most effective testing method for obtaining the above motions is the dynamic geotechnical centrifuge test. However, need is to verify if the motion recorded at the base of the soil model container in the centrifuge facility is the true base rock input motion or not. In this paper, the appropriate input motion measurement method for the verification of seismic response analysis is examined by dynamic geotechnical centrifuge test and using three-dimensional finite difference analysis results. From the results, it appears that the ESB (equivalent shear beam) model container distorts downward the propagating wave with larger magnitude of centrifugal acceleration and base rock input motion. Thus, the distortion makes the measurement of the base rock outcrop motion difficult which is essential for extracting the base rock incident motion. However, the base rock outcrop motion generated by using deconvolution method is free from the distortion effect of centrifugal acceleration.

  • Shield tunneling construction commonly crosses underground pipelines in urban areas, resulting in soil loss and followed deformation of grounds and pipelines nearby, which may threaten the safe operation of shield tunneling. This paper investigated the pipeline deformation caused by double curved shield tunnels in soil-rock composite stratum in Nanjing, China. The stratum settlement equation was modified to consider the double shield tunneling. Moreover, a three dimensional finite element model was established to explore the effects of hard-layer ratio, tunnel curvature radius, pipeline buried depth and other influencing factors. The results indicate the subsequent shield tunnel would cause secondary disturbance to the soil around the preceding tunnel, resulting in increased pipeline and ground surface settlement above the preceding tunnel. The settlement and stress of the pipeline increased gradually as buried depth of the pipeline increased or the hard-layer ratio (the ratio of hard-rock layer thickness to shield tunnel diameter within the range of the tunnel face) decreased. The modified settlement calculation equation was consistent with the measured data, which can be applied to the settlement calculation of ground surface and pipeline settlement. The modified coefficients a and b ranged from 0.45 to 0.95 and 0.90 to 1.25, respectively. Moreover, the hard-layer ratio had the most significant influence on the pipeline settlement, but the tunnel curvature radius and the included angle between pipeline and tunnel axis played a dominant role in the scope of the pipeline settlement deformation.

  • This paper investigated the effect of joint on the earth pressure against an excavation wall in rockmass with the consideration of various rock and joint conditions. For this purpose, this study briefly reviewed of the previous earth pressure studies, and then numerical parametric studies were conducted based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to overcome the limitations of the previous studies. The numerical tests were carried out with the controlled parameters including rock types and joint conditions (joint shear strength, joint inclination angle, and joint set), and the magnitude and distribution characteristics of the induced earth pressure were investigated considering the interactions between the ground and the excavation wall. In addition, the earth pressures induced in rock stratum were compared with Peck's earth pressure for soil ground. The results showed that the earth pressure against an excavation wall in jointed rockmass were highly affected by different rock and joint conditions and thus different from Peck's empirical earth pressure for soil ground.

  • A soil wall reinforced by soil nailing is excavated in the typical soil conditions which are consisted of weathered soil, weathered rock and soft rock. The resulting nail loads computed are compared to loads measured by utilizing strain gauges during construction. The wall deflection at two locations are related to construction events and specific soil conditions, providing an understanding of the behavior of soil nailed walls. The load distribution along the nail indicated relatively high loads close to the wall. The mobilized load on the nail is proportional to the wall deflection showing the maximum value at the surface of the wall. The construction monitoring for this project provided valuable information in understanding the behavior of soil nailed walls.

  • When cut slope is excavated, corestone in cut slope exists 20∼30%. In case of soil and soft rock mixing, people lay out gradient of 1 : 0.5, because of soft rock slope. In a case, slope that exists corestone between soil happens to large landslide. So, As a study performs geological survey, Analysis of slope stability reinforcement measures, etc, A study presents example meaures and analysis on slope stability of corestone.

  • Borehole geophysical techniques were adopted for characterizing aquifer properties of crystalline rock formation in Bongmyong borehole test site, Kangwon National University. Specific fractures and/or fracture zones accompanying groundwater flow were delineated well by high resolution flowmeter and dilution measurements, and could be confirmed fromconventional well log methods. These geophysical techniques have been proved to be the most effective in aquifer characterization in crystalline rock formation.

  • We carried out rock pneumatic fracturing test which to increase groundwater yield by injection of highly pressured air in artificially under the surface every four borehole. The result of test performing shows that effect of increasing groundwater was not found in three testhole around igneous and metamorphic formation area, but we can realized that about 15 percent increased wateryield appeared in number P-5 test hole at sedimmentary rock formation.

  • This study examined the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure on the support system in a jointed rock mass due to the different joint sets as well as varying the rock type and joint condition (joint shear strength and joint inclination angle). Based on a physical model test and its numerical simulation, a series of numerical parametric analyses were conducted using a discrete element method. The results showed that the induced earth pressure was affected significantly by a joint set depending on the inclusion of the joint inclination angle, which induces a joint sliding condition, but the number of joint sets alone was not important, even though the earth pressure could be increased slightly as the number of joint sets is increased. In addition, the study results were compared with Peck's earth pressure for soil ground, which indicated that the earth pressure in a jointed rock mass could be considerably different from that in soil ground. The study suggests that the effects of joint sets as well as rock type and joint condition are important factors affecting the earth pressure in a jointed rock mass and they should be considered when designing a support system in a jointed rock mass.
