  • This paper presents the design case of the 3-arch tunnel under existing railways and railway station building. The original construction method was the underpinning method supported by pipe-roof, but it was changed to the minded tunnelling method because of the complex construction condition and the safety problem. This 3-arch tunnel has a width of 28 meters and a height of 10 meters. Overburden is only 23m and the ground consists of the weathered soil and rock. Because the allowable settlements for the station building and railways are limited strictly, various measurements for the tunnel stability and the settlement minimization was considered.

  • In this paper, two dimensional vertical and comer infinite elements which can include multiple wave components to model underlying half space are developed. These elements are natural and economical to model underlying stiff half space or rock. To verify the behavior of these infinite elements, vertical, horizontal, and rocking compliances of a rigid strip foundation on a viscoelastic soil profile are analyzed and compared with those of Tzong and Penzien who used the boundary solution method. Good agreements are noticed between the two methods. The influence of material properties like Poisson's ratio, material damping, and stiffness ratio of layers as well as the influence of geometrical properties such as layer thicknesses and depth of foundation embedment are studied. Example analysis is carried out for the shaking table which is located in KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials), and the vertical and horizontal displacements of the analysis are compared with the measured, and show good results and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • In this study, a series of thermal numerical analysis was conducted through the ground condition and the length and shape of the energy pile. In order to investigate the effect of the thermal properties of ground condition, grout and pile type on heat transfer efficiency in the U-type heat exchanger in energy pile, thermal numerical analysis was done by using ABAQUS. ABAQUS, a finite element analyzing program, was employed to evaluate the temperature distribution on the cross section of energy pile system incorporating HDPE - grout - pile - Ground condition which consists of clay, sand, rock type soil and ground water.

  • Cemented Sand and Gravel(CSG) is a material made by simple mixing of rock-based raw materials such as excavated soil and riverbed gravel together with cement and water. The use of CSG methodl for cofferdam and large dam is gradually increasing in Japan because a quarry and aggregate plants can be diminished. Also, the CSG method can reduce dam construction cost, construction duration and destruction of environment. In this paper, field test and test construction of CSG method was conducted on Hwabuk Dam. The mechanical properties of CSG, such as compressive strength, extention strength and field permeability test were investigated. From the results of the experimental study, application study of CSG method was discussed.

  • The construction road work are increasing now. And the domestic slope construction are steadily increased and changed the complicated and large-scale. Therefore ground reinforcement for slope stabilization has been increasingly used during the past few decades with a wide variety of techniques including soil nailing, rock bolt, anchor and different types. But in some cases which applied slope reinforcement construction by badness or mistake. So this paper is the study of construction badness for slope reinforcement.

  • Temporal variation of nutrients and dissolved major and trace elements have been studied in the Yeongsan River, Korea. There were significant temporal fluctuations in the concentrations of these elements depending upon the flow condition. $NH_4$, $PO_4$, Na, Mg, Ca, K, Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, As and U concentrations were inversely related to the flow; that is, they are the highest at low flow and the lowest at high flow. It indicates that these elements are derived from point sources such as rock weathering and/or human activities and then diluted by increasing flow. Meanwhile, Fe and Si concentrations varied proportionally to the flow indicating that they are derived from diffuse sources including reactions within soil. The concentration-flow relationships showed that hydrology of the river is the most important factor controlling the chemical composition of the Yeongsan riverwater, which was compatible of the results of R-mode factor analysis.

  • Cheju island is composed of volcanic tuff. The soil in Cheju island has principally sprung from basalt and partially made up of trachyte, and andesite. Also ancient relics, plain coarse pottery kilns and pantiles kilns are homogeneously distributed all over the Cheju island. In this study samples of plain coarse pottery and pantiles from five regions of Cheju island have been examined through X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It is thought that these samples be partially formed from neutral volcanic rock like trachyte and the valence state of iron is almost $Fe^{3+}$. Also the magnetic hyperfine field of goethite contained in these samples is less than synthetic goethite. This result shows the degradation of magnetic order caused by the partial substitution of diamagnetic positive ion $Fe^{3+}$ by $Al^{3+}$ in the goethite lattice.

  • Various design factors should be considered in order to apply the concrete slab track system on the soil/rock roadbed. One of the important factors is the settlement of roadbed. This settlement of concrete track should be supervised under the allowable settlement limit. If the settlement of roadbed under the concrete track exceed the allowable limit, the train serviceability will considerably come down and furthermore the fatal disaster may happen. Therefore, in this paper we introduced a PRCG(pressurized rapid-hardening cement grouting) method as a settlement restoration method that can be suitably adopted to the concrete slab track.

  • The problem of cylindrical cavity expansion incorporating deformation dependent of intermediate principal stress in rock or soil mass is investigated in the paper. Assumptions that the initial axial total strain is a non-zero constant and the axial plastic strain is not zero are defined to obtain the numerical solution of strain which incorporates deformation-dependent intermediate principal stress. The numerical solution of plastic strains are achieved by the 3-D plastic potential functions based on the M-C and generalized H-B failure criteria, respectively. The intermediate principal stress is derived with the Hook's law and plastic strains. Solution of limited expansion pressure, stress and strain during cylindrical cavity expanding are given and the corresponding calculation approaches are also presented, which the axial stress and strain are incorporated. Validation of the proposed approach is conducted by the published results.
