  • A weathered residual soil is a soil-like material derived from the in situ weathering and decomposition of rock which has not been transported from its original location. Undisturbed sampling of residual soils is extremely difficult, which has an important effect on investigating the strength and compression characteristics. Thus, a special undisturbed sampling device (direct shear box with shoe) was developed and undisturbed samples were successfully obtained for direct shear tests, Direct shear testing was conducted under unsoaked and soaked condition. As a result, the shear strength of soaked samples was less than that of unsoaked samples, and it was verified that direct shearing of undisturbed samples can evaluate reasonably the shear strength and the slope stability.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the geotechnical characteristics and field application of soil mixed with waste lime. Waste lime used in this study is producted as a by-product in the manufacturing process of making Na$_2$CO$_3$from local chemical factory in Incheon. Currently about 320 milton tons of waste lime are accumulated and annually 100,000 tons are producted. In this study, feasible use of waste lime mixed with granited whathered soil, clay, crushed rock was invesigated through laboratory tests including specific gravity test, sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis, compaction test, CBR test. Field investigations were conducted on the road construction site in Incheon.

  • Base-isolated nuclear power plant (BI-NPP) structures are founded on expanded basemat as a flexible floating nuclear island, are still lacking the recommendation of the consideration of incoherent motion effect. The effect of incoherent earthquake motion on the seismic response of BI-NPP structure has been investigated herein. The incoherency of the ground motions is applied by using an isotropic frequency-dependent spatial correlation function to perform the conditional simulation of the reference design spectrum compatible ground motion in time domain. Time history analysis of two structural models with 486 and 5 equivalent lead plug rubber bearing (LRB) base-isolators have been done under uniform excitation and multiple point excitation. two different cases have been considered: 1) Incoherent motion generated for soft soil and 2) Incoherent motion generated for hard rock soil. The results show that the incoherent motions reduce acceleration and the lateral displacement responses and the reduction is noticeable at soft soil site and higher frequencies.

  • Most engineers, related to soil and civil dynamic field, have been interested in the direct dynamic design of building transmitted from soil and rock to structure due to blasting. However it is not easy to estimate the dynamic response of structures due to blasting by using analytical method because of difficulties of soil modeling, prediction of excitation force and so on. In this paper, dynamic analysis have been performed to predict vibration level and evaluate dynamic safety of structure adjacent to tunnel blast and the semi empirical method, which is based on vibration measurement data, has been employed to consider blast vibration characteristics.

  • The environmental gradient analyses were applied for the distribution patterns of species populations in mt. moak provincial park in korea. The species populations were sequentially ordered along the environmental gradients such as soil moisture, soil ph, soil organic matter content and elevation and were grouped into seven ecological groups by the two-dimensional analyses of temperature-moisture gradient : zelkova serrata group on mesic-lower parts near the streames and well drained stony slopes, carpinus tschonoskii group on mesic-middle parts, quercus acutissima group on lower parts destroyed by human activities, quercus variabilis group on xeric-middle parts, quercus serrata group on xeric-upper middle parts, quercus mongolica group on xeric-upper parts and pinus densiflora group on xeric-rock ridge lines, hillocks and lower parts interfered by human. Four forest vegetation types, zelkova forest dominated by the c. tschonoskii group on mesic-middle parts, oak forest dominated by the groups of q. acutissima, q. variabilis, q. serrata and q. mongolica on xeric sites and pine forest dominated by the p. densiflora group on dry and poor sites, were separated in mosaic chart by the two-dimensional analysis.

  • In this paper, a reliability-groundwater flow program is developed by coupling the 2-D finite element numerical groundwater flow program with first and second order reliability program. From the parametric study of hydraulic conductivity of soil layers, the increase of both mean and variance of hydraulic conductivity results in the increase of probability of exceeding the threshold hydraulic head. The probability of failure was more sensitive to parameters of weathered granitic soil and rock located at the middle and bottom of the excavation than those at the other locations. It can be recommended from this study that the reliability method, which can include the uncertainty of soil parameters, should be performed together with the deterministic analysis to compensate the weakness of the latter analysis for the groundwater flow problem of underground excavations.

  • This experimental shows the possibility of using as biofertilizer, which convert insoluble inorganic phosphate salts to plant-usable phosphate type by immobilized microorganism with calcium alginate. In the case of culture of P. agglomerans on constant medium pH, phosphate was produced 357 mg/L after 18hrs. And in the case of culture of immobilzed P. agglomerans bead, phosphate was produced maximum 295.6 mg/L after 120 hrs. Also as using rock phosphate as insoluble phosphate salts, phosphate was respectably produced 190.3 and 195.2 mg/L after 36 hrs at free cells and immobilized cells. In our experiments, the using soils contained 23.16 g-P/kg-soil total phosphate and 3.76 g-P/kg-soil soluble phosphate. The result of 1g immobilized bead seeding, soluble phosphate was produced maximum 6.14 g-P/kg-soil phosphate and this value was increased continuously.

  • Quaternary fault movement of the Ulsan fault system was interpreted by aenal photograph, field survey and trench excavation. The geomorphological evidences associated with active fault are clearly shown at Cheonbuk-myeon area, northern part of Ulsan fault system. In the trench wall one reverse fault(N 50$^{\circ}$E, 70$^{\circ}$E) is identified between basement rock (Miocene mudstone) and gravel deposits Another thrust fault (NS) extends up to the red and light brown soil layers. Middle terrace surface shows cumulative vertical displacements of about 3 to 7 m. The horizontai displacement of the red soil by faulting event is about 1.8 to 2.4m. The age of the fault activity is younger than that of the soil layer, which is roughly estimated to be late Quaternary (about 100Ka)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical properties of ultra fine-ground cement for grouting materials. This study investigates the compressive strength of cement paste, homogenized gel and solidified soil matrix with ultra fine-ground cement. Also It is estimated the injection properties of ultra fine-ground cement. From the test results, the compressive strength of ultra fine-ground cement is higher than that of portland cement. The injection properties are sufficient to apply silt-sand soil and minute-cracked rock bed. Also the properties of soil stability like water permeability coefficient are enough to be adapted various grouting specification.
