  • In this study, a control blast method, which utilizes crack guide holes, is suggested to achieve smooth fracture plane and minimize blast damage zone (BDZ) in smooth blasting. In order to verify the effectiveness of crack guide holes on the fracture plane control in blasting, fracture process analyses which consider regular smooth blasting and guide hole smooth blasting had been conducted and the fracture planes resulting from the analyses had been compared. The analyses models considered the ignition of the blast holes using detonation cords and each guide hole placed between blast holes. From the results, the smooth blasting utilizing guide holes showed lower fracture plane roughness than regular smooth blasting method in the hole spacing range between 20 to 40cm.

  • Nowadays, a roadheader as a mechanical excavator is in high demand, especially for mines under various conditions and tunnels where TBMs are inapplicable. However, the records of roadheaders in Korea are seldom reported. Moreover, the number of countries with their intrinsic design and manufacturing technologies of roadheaders is very limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the excavation principles of roadheader as well as its key design parameters for its optimized selection and design. In addition, the database with 143 world-widely collected roadheader design data was built, and a few statistical correlations were derived from it. A schematic procedure for roadheader design based on the database was also proposed.

  • Multi-stage shear test has been performed using joint specimens of gneiss, granite and shale to investigate the influence of micro-scale asperity change on the shear strength of joint plane. For each shear test asperity degradation characteristics of joint specimens of different joint surface strength have been analyzed by utilizing the optimum asperity parameter which can reflect the sequential asperity degradation. Elevation of joint surface profile has been measured and both the changes of asperity parameters and micro-scale asperity distribution have been investigated. Two distinctive variation modes of cohesion and friction angle have been delineated and major cause of shear strength parameter change has been analyzed by considering the micro-scale asperity angle change resulting from the abrasion, fracturing and regeneration of micro-scale asperities. Effects of micro-scale asperity variation on the joint shear strength have been also investigated.

  • Joint sets should be considered as an influence factor, when location of subsidence zone by stopes is predicted. And the mechanical properties and distribution patterns of joint set above stopes may be affecting subsidence occurrence. In this study, therefore, the orientation of joint sets is reanalyzed with the data from the previous research on prediction of defining the subsidence zone. From a correlated analysis, the influence of major joint set($J_1$) on subsidence location was analyzed by comparing the angle of assumption with the angle of major joint set($J_1$).

  • The objective of this study is to assess risks which might occur in connection with the storage of the highly compressed air in underground opening. Risk factors were selected throughout literature survey and analysis for the characteristic of CAES. Large risk factors were categorized in three components; planning and design phase, construction phase, and operation & maintenance phases. Large category was composed of 8 medium risk groups and 24 sub-risks. AHP technique was applied in order to analyze the questionnaires answered by experts and high-risk factors were selected by evaluating the relative importance of risks. AHP analysis showed that the operation & maintenance phases are the highest risk group among three components of large category and the highest risk group of eight medium risk groups is risk associated with the quality and safety. Risk having the highest risk level in 24 sub-risks is evaluated to be a failure of tightness security of inner containment storing compressed air.

  • Approximately 70% of the Korean peninsula is composed of mountains, around 99,274 $km^2$. Even worse, population rate of Korea is the No.3 in the world now. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop the potential underground space actively with the concept of another territory to be utilized. The development of underground space should be considered not a choice but an indispensable issue. Since 1970s, many large-scale underground structures have been constructed like as crude-oil storage bins, liquefied petroleum gas storage caverns, and underground pumped storage powerplants. Also, In urban area, the underground facilities such as subway networks, underground shopping mall, underground pedestrian network, electric power tunnels, and car parking lots have been used extensively. The scale of Yeosu oil and gas underground storage facility and Seoul subway systems are one of the massive scale in the world. Recently, the trend of the development of underground space becomes more diverse and larger scale. The current status of Korean underground space developments and strategy are described in this paper.

  • We conducted hollow cylinder tensile strength tests and Brazilian tests in Seokmo granite to measure tensile strength necessary for estimating the magnitude of the maximum horizontal principal stress in hydraulic fracturing stress measurements. Two different pressurization rates were used in hollow cylinder tests. Tensile strengths were determined to be higher at higher pressurization rate, which suggests that tensile strength should be measurement at the same rate used in actual in situ hydraulic fracturing tests. Considering the effect of pressurization rate and specimen size on tensile strength, the hollow cylinder tests and Brazilian tests yield similar results each other. This demonstrates that Brazilian tests can be utilized to produce representative tensile strengths for interpretation of hydraulic fracturing test results.

  • The correlation analysis between the results obtained from DFN flow model and equivalent continuum flow model were conducted on total of 72 DFN blocks having various fracture geometry and domain size. A strong linear relation seems to exist between the two approaches under condition that normalized relative error for continuum behavior (ER) is less than 0.2, and the results from both methods are found to almost identical. To explore the field applicability of equivalent continuum flow model in DFN media, a total of 48 numerical schemes related to inflow of underground circular openings were implemented under various DFN configurations. The equivalent continuum flow model in DFN media with a constant hydraulic aperture was evaluated as valid. However, as the anisotropy increases due to variation of the hydraulic aperture, the results are likely to be overestimated compare to the DFN flow model.

  • In this study, an influence of mixing ratio among firing oyster shell, non-firing oyster shell, magnetic separated converter steel slag and fly ash used as admixtures on strength properties of soil cement was evaluated by correlation analysis among compressive strength, deformation modulus and mixing ratio of admixtures. As a result, the strength of the specimens containing non-firing oyster shells was found to be larger than that of firing oyster shells, and it was confirmed that firing oyster shells could negatively affect the strength of soil cement specimens unlike previous studies. In addtion, there was a positive correlation between the ratio of magnetic separated converter slag and strength properties, so it is confirmed that it can be used as an admixture.

  • This study analyzed the development status and applications of collision avoidance systems for mine safety management. The definitions of collision avoidance system used in Australia and USA were compared. Sensing technologies utilized in the collision avoidance systems were reviewed. In addition, several collision avoidance systems developed in oversea mining company, such as $MineAlert^{TM}$ Collision Awareness System, Cat $MineStar^{TM}$, and Intelligent Proximity Detection, were reviewed. In the domestic mining industry, no collision avoidance system was used. However, similar systems were utilized in the construction and railroad industry. Collision avoidance system can prevent unexpected collision accident and thus improve worker's safety in mine. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze and apply sensors and system appropriate for the domestic mining environment via review of overseas collision avoidance system.
