  • As robotics become more sophisticated, there are a growing number of generic systems being used for routine tasks in nuclear environments to reduce risk to radiation workers. The nuclear sector has called for more commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices and components to be used in preference to nuclear specific hardware, enabling robotic operations to become more affordable, reliable, and abundant. To ensure reliable operation in nuclear environments, particularly in high-gamma facilities, it is important to quantify the tolerance of electronic systems to ionizing radiation. To deliver their full potential to end-users, mobile robots require sophisticated autonomous behaviors and sensing, which requires significant computational power. A popular choice of computing system, used in low-cost mobile robots for nuclear environments, is the UP Core single board computer. This work presents estimates of the total ionizing dose that the UP Core running the Robot Operating System (ROS) can withstand, through gamma irradiation testing using a Co-60 source. The units were found to fail on average after 111.1 ± 5.5 Gy, due to faults in the on-board power management circuitry. Its small size and reasonable radiation tolerance make it a suitable candidate for robots in nuclear environments, with scope to use shielding to enhance operational lifetime.

  • Ultrasonic sensors have been widely used to recognize the working environment for a mobile robot. However, their intrinsic problems, such as specular reflection, wide beam angle, and slow propagation velocity, require an excessive number of sensors to be integrated for achieving the sensing goal. This paper proposes a new measurement scheme which uses only two sets of ultrasonic sensors to determine the location and the type of a target surface. By measuring the time difference between the returned signals from the target surface, which are generated by two transmitters with 1 ㎳ difference, it classifies the type and determines the size of the target surface. Since the proposed sensor system uses only two sets of ultrasonic sensors to recognize and localize the target surface, it significantly simplifies the sensing system and reduces the signal processing time so that the working environment can be recognized in real time.

  • Soft fluidic actuators (SFAs) are widely utilized in various areas such as wearable systems due to the inherent compliance which allows safe and flexible interaction. However, SFA-driven systems generally require a large pump, multiple valves and tubes, which hinders to develop a miniaturized system with small range of motion. Thus, a highly integrated soft actuator needs to be developed for implementing a compact SFA-driven system. In this study, we propose an electro-hydraulic soft zipping actuator that can be used as a miniature pump. This actuator exerts tactile force as a dielectric liquid contained inside the actuator pressurized its deformable part. In addition, the proposed actuator can estimate the internal dielectric liquid thickness by using its self-sensing function. Besides, the electrical characteristics and driving performance of the proposed system were verified through experiments.

  • The exoskeleton robot is a technology developed to be used in various fields such as military, industry and medical treatment. The exoskeleton robot works by sensing the movement of the wearer. By recognizing the wearer's daily activities, the exoskeleton robot can assist the wearer quickly and efficiently utilize the system. In this study, LDA, QDA, and kNN are used to classify gait types through kinetic data obtained from subjects. Walking was selected from general walking and stair walking which are mainly performed in daily life. Seven IMUs sensors were attached to the subject at the predetermined positions to measure kinematic factors. As a result, LDA was classified as 78.42%, QDA as 86.16%, and kNN as 87.10% ~ 94.49% according to the value of k.

  • An underwater robot S/W framework consists of various sub-modules such as sensory data processing module, thruster control module, cognition module and behavior control module. Performance of a robot is determined by not only the efficiency of algorithms used but also effectiveness of their implementations. One most important factor of the effective implementation is the efficiency of data sharing module, as it transmits signals and data between the sub-modules and thus is directly related to the cycles of sensing and control The ideal data sharing module enables immediate access to any data source irrespective of system configurations. In reality, however, there are lots of obstacles including limitation of processing capacity of source modules, delay over network, and scheduling latency of operating systems. The paper proposes a new data sharing architecture and programming models to effectively handle such obstacles in implementation of underwater S/W framework on a small scale distributed computing system.

  • In this paper, we describe an implementation of small mobile robot that can be used at research and application of mobile sensor networking. This robot that will constitute the sensor network, as a platform of multi-robot system for each to be used as sensor node, has to satisfy restrictions in many aspects in order to perform sensing, communication protocol, and application algorithms. First, the platform must be designed with a robust structure and low power consumption since its maintenance after deployment is difficult. Second, it must have flexibility and modularity to be used effectively in any structure so that it can be used in various applications. Third, it must support the technique of wireless network for ubiquitous computing environment. At last, to let many nodes be scattered, it must be cost-effective and small. Considering the above restrictions of the mobile platform for sensor network, we designed and implemented robots control the current of actuator by using additional circuit for power efficiency. And we chose MSP430 as MCU, CC2420 as RF transceiver, and etc, that have the strength in the aspect of power. For flexibility and modularity, the platform has expansion ports. The results of experiments are described to show that this robot can act as sensor node by RF communication process with Zigbee standard protocol, execute the navigation process with simple obstacle avoidance and the moving action with RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator), operate at low-power, and be made with approx. $100.

  • Radial distance sensors are widely used for surveying and autonomous navigation. It is necessary to train the operation principle of these sensors and how to apply them. Although commercialization of radial distance sensor continues to be cost-effective through lower performance, but it is still expensive for educational purposes. In this paper, we propose a distance sensor module with object tracking using radial array of low cost phototransistor which can be used for educational robot. The proposed method is able to detect the position of a fast moving object immediately by arranging the phototransistor in the range of 180 degrees and improve the sensing angle range and track the object by the sensor rotation using the servo motor. The scan speed of the proposed sensor is 50~200 times faster than the commercial distance sensor, thus it can be applied to a high performance educational mobile robot with 1ms control loop.

  • This paper presents capacitive tactile sensor that can detect normal and shear forces. This tactile sensor consists of index plate, sensing plate, and elastic dielectric layer. The calculated sensing character is based on the changes of space between two horizontal plate. Larger overlap areas and narrow space between top and bottom plate guarantees higher sensitivity. Tactile sense information can be calculated from the changes of phase of output signal. The symmetric arrangement of sensing plates makes the manufacturing process easier and guarantees the stability of the structure. In this paper, the sensor structure is designed, the mechanism of the Proposed sensor is theoretically explained, and the simulated result is presented.
