  • This paper investigates an algorithm for robust fault diagnosis in robot manipulators. The TOSM (Third Order Sliding Mode observer) provides both theoretically exact observation and unknown fault identification without filtration. The EOI (Equivalent Output Injections) of the TOSM observers can be used as residuals for the problem of fault diagnosis and to identify the unknown faults. The obtained fault information can be used for fault detection, isolation as well as fault accommodation to the self-correcting failure system. The computer simulation results for a PUMA 560 robot are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

  • The conventional robot manipulability is decomposed into linear manipulability and angular manipulability so that they may be analysed and visualized in easy way even in the case of 3 dimensional task space with 6 variables. After the Jacobian matrix is decomposed into linear part and angular part, constraint on joint velocities is transformed into linear task velocity and angular task velocity through the decomposed Jacobian matrices. Under the assumption of redundant robot manipulators, several optimization problems which utilize the redundancy are formulated to be solved by linear programming technique or sequential quadratic programming technique. After deriving the solutions of the optimization problems, we give graphical interpretations for the solutions.

  • Neural network control has many innovative potentials for fast, accurate and intelligent adaptive control. In this paper, two kinds of neurocontrol architectures for the dynamic control of robot manipulators are developed. One is based on a System Identification and Control scheme and the other is based on the Feedback-Error leaming scheme. Both of the proposed architectures use an inverse dynamic neurocontroller in parallel with a linear neurocontroller. The difference is that the first architecture uses the system identifier to get the signals used for training neurocontrollers, while the second architecture uses a properly defined energy function. Compared with the previous types of neurocontrollers which are using an inverse dynamic neurocontroller and a fixed PD gain controller, the proposed architectures not only eliminate the painful process of the fixed gain tuning but also exhibit superior peformances because the linear neurocontroller can adapt its gains according to the applied task. This superior performance is tested and verified through computer simulation of the dynamic control of the PUMA 560 arm.

  • A novel iterative learning control scheme comprising a unique feedforward learning controller and a disturbance observer is proposed. Disturbance observer compensates disturbance due to parameter variations, mechanical nonlinearities, unmodeled dynamics and external disturbances. The convergence and robustness of the proposed controller is proved by the method based on Lyapunov stability theorem. The results of numerical simulation are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

  • In this paper, we consider the handling f a flexible object using dual-arm manipulators. We choose both the side arms as rigid, and the objects to be manipulated as flexible. Our purpose is to realize position control for the flexible object while suppressing its vibration. In particular, the problem taken up here is the stability of the control system while manipulating the object. We propose that the traditional approach to investigate the robot system be expanded to include the object's characteristics (thus transferring the stability of the robot system into the full assembly system). We define a handling characteristic while manipulating the object. Finally, the relationship between the handling characteristic and the positional constraint condition in the hold position of the arms is studied while considering the stability of the control system.

  • Like the usual systems, the industrial robot manipulator has some constraints for motion. Usually we hope that the manipulators move fast to accomplish the given task. The problem can be formulated as the time-optimal control problem under the constraints such as the limits of velocity, acceleration and jerk. But it is very difficult to obtain the exact solution of the time-optimal control problem. This paper solves this problem in two steps. In the first step, we find the minimum time trajectories by optimizing cubic polynomial joint trajectories under the physical constraints using the modified evolution strategy. In the second step, the controller is optimized for robot manipulator to track precisely the optimized trajectory found in the previous step. Experimental results for SCARA type manipulator show that the proposed method is very useful.

  • This paper is concerned with a robust model following control scheme for manipulators which contains uncertain terms. Our method consists of nonlinear compensation and linear compensation. The former ensures the robustness of the plant, the later achieves both the desired model following response and the desired initial error convergence.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design of neural control system using digital signal processors in order to improve the precision and robustness. Robotic manipulators have become increasingly important in the field of flexible automation. High speed and high-precision trajectory tracking are indispensable capabilities for their versatile application. The need to meet demanding control requirement in increasingly complex dynamical control systems under significant uncertainties, leads toward design of intelligent manipulation robots. The TMS320C31 is used in implementing real time neural control to provide an enhanced motion control for robotic manipulators. In this control scheme, the networks introduced are neural nets with dynamic neurons, whose dynamics are distributed over all the network nodes. The nets are trained by the distributed dynamic back propagation algorithm. The proposed neural network control scheme is simple in structure, fast in computation, and suitable for implementation of real-time control. Performance of the neural controller is illustrated by simulation and experimental results for a SCARA robot.

  • As usual systems, robot manipulators have also physical constraints for operating. It is a difficult problem that we operate manipulator in the minimal time under these constraints. In this paper, we solve this problem dividing it into two steps. In the first step, we find the minimal time trajectories by optimizing qubic polynomial joint trajectories using evolutionary algorithms. In the second step, we optimize controller for robot manipulator to track precisely trajectories optimized in the previous step.

  • This paper presents a new variable structure model following control algorithm for control of manipulators. The reference model is a simple double integrators and the acceleration input for the robot manipulator consists of a proportional and derivative controller for the purpose of trajectory tracking. The control algorithm is derived by using Lyapunov stability theory instead of S.S < O, as is usual in the current VSS controller design. This proposed control algorithm does not require good knowledge of the parameter in the inertia matrix and is easily extendable to robot manipulators with a higher number of links. Also, the new algorithm is computationally fast because of not requiring the matrix inversion. The computer simulation was carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed VSMFC.
