  • This paper presents a novel method to determine sound power level(PWL) emitted by a travelling vehicle for road traffic noise simulation. The PWL is evaluated by the equivalent sound pressure level(SPL) measured by close proximity method and the sound power correction factor derived from the maximum SPL measured by pass-by method and the propagation attenuation of vehicle noise during the pass-by measurement. Using the method, we derive the empirical formula for PWL estimation in 1/1-octave and overall frequency bands for 8 vehicles(automobile, SUV, small truck, large bus, trailer, 3 dump trucks) tested at two road surfaces(dense graded asphalt, 30mm transverse tinning concrete) of Korean highway test road. The suggested approach, if securing sufficient data to represent the acoustic characteristics of au vehicle types, has a strong merit to be able to evaluate sound power levels for any combination of vehicle categories and traffic volumes.

  • This paper concerns the development of distributed interactive simulation of a road traffic system. The simulation involved models of multiple and distributed road vehicles running on different locations. The simulation system represented a traffic system as if the distributed simulation models were in the same environment. The development of the distributed road traffic simulation was based on High Level Architecture (HLA), a state-of-the-art IEEE standard for the distributed and real-time simulation. Other work concerned modeling and simulating the road vehicles and building the map database for the virtual distributed shared environment. The information used in the simulation system was only in X-axis and Y-axis as the insignificant data in the Z-axis was omitted to simplify the simulation. However, the traffic system has visualized a 3-D coordinate system. The road vehicle models were able to avoid collision. The next direction of a vehicle can be chosen from the provided choices of further paths.

  • In this paper, we propose techniques for hazard analysis of curved road based on USN. The techniques consist of models and algorithms. Models of curved road, road direction, sensor, vehicle and hazard are proposed. To analyze hazard in curved road and give warning to corresponding vehicle in realtime multi-level algorithms are proposed. • PURPOSES : The computational fluid dynamics of flow and fine particles in a road were set to determine the insert flow and occurrence characteristics. METHODS : The road extension was 100 m with two lanes. A one-ton truck traveled a 50-m distance. After a noise barrier was installed on one side of the road, the flow and a collision analysis were tested. RESULTS : The flow that occurred was 5 m/s beside the vehicle, and fine particulate was $5.0{\times}10^2{\mu}g/m^3$ after 20 m from the exhaust vent. CONCLUSIONS : After a collision analysis of the fine particulate on the noise barrier to find the most suitable position of the filter panel in height, the bottom 1 m was the most optimum position because 88.1% of the distribution was concentrated there.

  • For the stress and vibration analysis of vehicle component by computer simulation, it is necessary to find the forces acting on the vehicle components due to the road profile undulation. A precise modeling of tires is not easy due to nonlinear effects between tire-ground. In this study, a new method is proposed to regenerate road profiles that preserves the same PSD of wheel with a linear tire model. Using the frequency response function between road-wheel , the digital signal processing method, and DADS program , road profile is regenerated from the computer simulation.

  • Analog CPPN-based optimal road boundary detection algorithm for autonomous vehicle is proposed. The CPPN is a massively connected analog parallel array processor. In the paper, the dynamic programming which is an efficient algorithm to find the optimal path is implemented with the CPPN algorithm. If the image of road-boundary information is utilized as an inter-cell distance, and goals and start lines are positioned at the top and the bottom of the image, respectively, the optimal path finding algorithm can be exploited for optimal road boundary detection. By virtue of the parallel and analog processing of the CPPN and the optimal solution of the dynamic programming, the proposed road boundary detection algorithm is expected to have very high speed and robust processing if it is implemented into circuits. The proposed road boundary algorithm is described and simulation results are reported.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for generating a global path for an unmanned vehicle using public data of road section information. First, the method of analyzing road section information of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is presented. Second, we propose a method of preprocessing the acquired road section information and processing it into meaningful data that can be used for global routes. Third, we present a method for generating a global path using the preprocessed road section information. The proposed method has proven its effectiveness through actual autonomous driving experiments of unmanned ground vehicles.

  • Road signs provide important safety information about road and traffic conditions to drivers. Road signs include not only common traffic signs but also warning information regarding unexpected obstacles and road constructions. Therefore, accurate detection and identification of road signs is one of the most important research topics related to safe driving. In this paper, we propose a 3-D vision technique to automatically detect and track road signs in a video sequence which is acquired from a stereo vision camera mounted on a vehicle. First, color information is used to initially detect the sign candidates. Second, the SVM (Support Vector Machine) is employed to determine true signs from the candidates. Once a road sign is detected in a video frame, it is continuously tracked from the next frame until it is disappeared. The 2-D position of a detected sign in the next frame is predicted by the 3-D motion of the vehicle. Here, the 3-D vehicle motion is acquired by using the 3-D pose information of the detected sign. Finally, the predicted 2-D position is corrected by template-matching of the scaled template of the detected sign within a window area around the predicted position. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect and track many types of road signs successfully. Tracking comparisons with two different methods are shown.

  • This paper presents a design of the controller for vehicle lateral dynamics using active yaw moment. Vehicle lateral motion is incorporated with directional controllability and stability. These are conflicting each other from the view of vehicle handling performance. To compromise the trade-off between these two aspects, we suggest a new control algorithm based on the sliding mode with time-varying switching surface according to the body side slip angle. The controller can deal with the nonlinear region in vehicle driving condition and be robust to the parameter uncertainties in the plant model. Control performance is evaluated from the simulation for the vehicle of real parameters on the road with various tire-road frictions.

  • Electric Power Steering (EPS) mechanism has become widely equipped in passenger vehicle due to the increasing environmental concerns and higher fuel efficiency. This paper describes the development of concurrent simulation technique and simulation integration technique of EPS control system with a dynamic vehicle system. A full vehicle model interacting with EPS control algorithm was concurrently simulated on a single bump road condition. The dynamic responses of vehicle chassis and steering system resulting from road surface impact were evaluated and compared with proving ground experimental data. The comparisons show reasonable agreement on tie-rod load, rack displacement, steering wheel torque and tire center acceleration. This concurrent simulation capability was employed fur EPS performance evaluation and calibration as well as for vehicle handling performance integration and synthesis.
