  • The objective of this study is to develop road traffic accident model involving child pedestrian especially at school zones and its surrounding area. The analysis is based upon traffic accident data collected near sixty elementary schools in City of Cheongju during 2012 and 2014. This study results in two statistical models ; one is to predict the number of road traffic accidents involving children, and the other is to predict EPDO(Equivalent Prperty Damage Only). These models are represented as Poisson models. which are statistically significant with the likelihood ratios of 0.533 and 0.273. The common explanatory variables of these models are the ratio of road section with more than 4 lanes, the number of entrance and exit, the number of signalized crosswalk in school zone, the number of school zone signage including road surface marking, and the number of speed limit signs. The specific variables are the length of road stretch in school zone, the number of reflector mirrors, and the number of signalized crosswalk outside school zone. It is concluded that these types of road safety facilities can reduce the number of traffic accidents involving children at school zones and its surrounding area.

  • PURPOSES : In this study, field performance evaluation of crack treatment of pavement and the feasibility of surface treatment of pavement are presented. The performance and cost of preventive maintenance methods have been previously verified, and the methods are being used in many developed countries and cities. However, the performance and cost of the system have not been verified in domestic, field applications. Therefore, in order to improve performance, the field performance is evaluated, and a reasonable cost is proposed. METHODS : Visual Inspection was conducted to evaluate the field application and performance of the preventive maintenance method. In addition, the PCI index was calculated from the results of visual inspection of the application area of the surface treatment method, and the performance life of each method was predicted. For the economic evaluation, life cycle cost analysis was performed using the life cycle cost analysis program. RESULTS :In order to evaluate and quantify the field performance of crack repair material, the residue condition of the pavement surface after crack treatment, rather than the performance of the material, is evaluated. In addition, the crack resistance and performance life of surface treatment methods are evaluated. The cost of currently available treatment methods are compared to the common pavement cut and overlay method, and it is determined that the preventive method is not economical based on life cycle cost analysis. CONCLUSIONS :Because of the characteristics of cracking, it is necessary to conduct the evaluation of currently applied methods and the analysis of the cause of damage, by visual inspection. Moreover, in order to evaluate the performance and economic suitability of the currently applied surface treatment methods, it is necessary to acquire information on application sections by monitoring their long-term conditions and performance.

  • In this study, we have intended to precisely analyze the aspect of propagation and the extent of damage due to the traffic noise as hon as a main source of noise in urban area. The propagation of traffic noise has a strong relationship between distance and shape of surface. Thus, it is necessary to consider the distribution of buildings for estimating effects of noise in urban area because noise propagations will be affected by buildings. For this, we developed the DEM and DBM using the airborne LiDAR data in the study area and compared with results from the noise simulations using the each model. The extent of damage occurred by the traffic noise above 60 dB(A) from the case of DEM were shown at the 60% of a whole study area, whereas the extent from other case of DBM were shown at the 30% of a whole study area. Also, the extent of the noise levels between 45 dB(A) and 50 dB(A) will be generally recognized as calm environment was increased(the 0% to the 43%) in the case which simulated with building informations. These results indicated that the shape informations of buildings like a DBM is a essential source to simulate the propagation of traffic noise in urban area especially. With results in this study, the effect of traffic noise at a specific area will be easily and precisely estimated if we have the LiDAR data and a traffic census for Korea. Furthermore specific area's traffic noise simulation could be possible using only road traffic information once we have DBM data from LiDAR surveying. This also could be applied as a base data for noise pollution petitioning, traffic planning, construction, etc. in huge city planning projects like a U-City.

  • Ground vibration caused by blasting in the urban area close to structures can give some indirect damage to human body and may lead to structural damage to buildings. At the stage of design or when complaints were filed by residents, the test blasting in borehole, which is most practical for expressing simple vibration wave form quantitatively, is usually chosen for assessing the degree of damage to structures. In this paper, some lessons gained from the application of electronic detonator triggering system in borehole test blasting are presented. The difference in delay time of detonator when borehole is blasted by electronic detonator and electric detonator are discussed. The peak particle velocities measured at the structure embedded in the similar rock layer to main line of tunnel at test site and measured at the road surface just above the tunnel having different overburden layers were analysed to draw their relationship. By comparing the results with those appearing in some published literatures, the usefulness of the borehole test blasting and the importance of delay time of detonator are addressed.

  • In cold-climate regions, deicing agents is used for smooth traffic on the road due to freezing and snowdrift in winter. The use of de-icing salts has resulted in the accelerated scaling damage of concrete with salt damage under freezing and thawing condition. Scaling is the deterioration of concrete where in the paste-mortar structure delaminates in flakes from the surface of the concrete. Due to such damage, concrete pavement causes various problems such as early deterioration according to the decrease in the thickness of cover concrete and user's stability issues. Accordingly, various tests and evaluation methods have been suggested in order to evaluate these phenomena in other countries. However, there have been no regulations for the evaluation method in South Korea, and related studies are also very rare. Therefore, in this study, the evaluation methods proposed by each institution and country were investigated and the experiments were performed according to each regulation, followed by the comparison and analysis of the results. Furthermore, this study aims to suggest the optimized experimental method adopted to domestic field through the discussion of such experimental methods and results.

  • Asphalt Plug Joint(APJ) is an buried expansion joint that enabling the smooth connection of expansion gap and road pavement by filling the gap with bituminous mixture of 20% bitumen and 80% aggregate by weight, so it secures evenness and expansion or contraction using the material's properties. Although APJ is designed to have a 6-7 year lifecycle, there are some cases where it is damaged within the first six months. This early damage cause traffic congestion due to frequent repair works, and social cost exceeding the installation cost of the joint. So, in this research, we have developed a new system of Buried Folding Lattice Joint(BFLJ) which can overcome the disadvantages of APJ, and have analyzed and compared it's performance with the conventional APJ through experiment with specimens. As a result of the experiment, APJ had crack formation on both ends of the gap plate, spreading to the surface of the expansion joint. With this result, we can conclude that the reason for early damage is the tension failure due to the concentration of strain in the asphalt mixture along the end of gap plate and the debonding along the joint section. In contrast, the newly developed BFLJ induced even transformation in the joint by applying moving stud and high performance material, and resolved APJ's disadvantage of strain concentration. Therefore, it could be seen that the newly developed BFLJ could overcome the disadvantages of APJ and prevent early damage.

  • Recently, usage bicycle is encouraged to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution. For this purpose, bike road constructions are actively performed. However, types of pavement used in bike roads have high construction cost and performance comparing the required capacity of bike roads. Thus, an economical pavement type for construction is necessary for the effective development. Roller compacted concrete pavement have good requirements, such as easy construction and low costs, high structural performance of hydration and internal communication aggregation on compaction for bicycle roads. However, the pool landscape surface and resistance to deicer damage cannot be applied to the construction of bicycle roads. Thus, for solving this problem used coating which may have effect of improving the landscape and environmental resistance. To examine this effect were evaluated performance of roller compacted concrete pavement on the coating.

  • Potholes are an important clue to the structural defects of asphalt pavement and cause many casualties and property damage. Therefore, accurate pothole detection is an important task in road surface maintenance. Many machine learning technologies are being introduced for pothole detection, and data preprocessing is required to increase the efficiency of deep learning models. In this paper, we propose a preprocessing method that emphasizes important textures and shapes in pothole datasets. The proposed preprocessing method uses intensity transformation to reduce unnecessary elements of the road and emphasize the texture and shape of the pothole. In addition, the feature of the porthole is detected using Superpixel and Sobel edge detection. Through performance comparison between the proposed preprocessing method and the existing preprocessing method, it is shown that the proposed preprocessing method is a more effective method than the existing method in detecting potholes.

  • Concrete scaling is the progressive surface deterioration of susceptible subjected to freeze-thaw cycling in the presence of moisture. Particularly, it has been recognized that chlorides present in deicing agents can significantly increase concrete surface scaling. Domestic area of most be happened chloride deicer damage. Because daily mean temperature is below 0$^{\circ}C$ from the area of domestic most. Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, not only the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and ability to deterioration roadway surface materials but also the source of environmental damages. In this study, Use of (40, 27, 21MPa) pavement concrete analyze freeze-thaw test and scaling on the chlorides present.

  • The Government is implementing the safety measures for pedestrian in living zone to decrease the traffic accident casualties in half. It is urgently to study the guideline because it contains to make the guideline of a median strip in City to prevent the violation of central line and jaywalking on the main contents. So, this study analyzed the pedestrian accidents and the violation of central line, and studied the type of a median strip, the installation guideline through studying the minimum crossing. Consequently, this study found out that a median strip which revised the attention inducement stick to decrease jaywalking could not have the strong prevention function of a crash barrier, so if it happens separation after the collision between vehicles, it induced the secondary accidents, and could take negative effects on traffic safety. In consideration of driving safety, this study analyzed that if it installs a median stirp, it has to ensure one meter, and such a thing could prevent the separation of lane or damage of facilities. However, if it is hard to ensure the space because of narrow road width, it could install a median strip in case of installing the road surface mark 0.5m. And the installation of the attention inducement stick or a median strip on the central line could be possible to induce the violation of central line, thus it is desirable not to install only anythings but also raised pavement markers.
