A pilot-scale test-bed was operated employing three soils with different grain sizes dredged from the Nakdong River to obtain the design and operation parameters of the multi-purpose filtration pond, such as the filtrate productivity of the filter sand, the appropriate removal period of the surface clogging and the contaminant removal efficiency. The cross-flow velocities were applied stepwise ranging from 0 to 40 cm/sec in order to simulate the various velocities in the artificial stream of the pond. Results showed that a filtrate production rate of 5~3 $m^3/m^2-day$ was maintained by removing the surface clogging every 7 to 13 days and that the filtrate quality was not affected by the factors of the filtrate production rate, the grain size of the filter sand and the cross-flow velocity. Results also showed that most of the removal occurred within 50 cm of the top soil and that the removal efficiencies with the filtration distance of 2.4 m were 80~95% for turbidity, 20~30% for COD, 75~90% for BOD, 5~20% for total nitrogen and 20~60% for total phosphorus, which suggested that particulate matters had a high removal efficiency.

This study tries to find a streambed scouring and sedimentation characteristics through the Rosgen(1994)'s stream classification system while experiencing several flood events. The Jinwee and Osan streams, the tributaries of Anseongcheon were selected. The streams showed type C or type E. By the classification results, two Type C tributaries one Type C stream and one Type E tributary were selected. For the four selected stream reaches, the analysis of streambed change was implemented by using numerical model CCHE2D (Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering). To prepare the inlet boundary conditions of each stream, the WMS (Watershed Modeling System) HEC-1 was used and the streamflows of 50, 80, and 100-year return period were generated and the outlet boundary was set to an open boundary condition. The simulation results showed that when the flood pulse periodically the streambed changes also appears regularly. The results can be used to acquire the basic data for stream restoration.

In the case of the side scan sonar operated by the towing method, the underwater structure electric jig was developed because there is a difficulty in the cross-sectional survey that the user wants when conducting the survey. However, in the case of the sound wave photographing method using the electric jig, since the boat and the sonar behaves as one body, data distortion has occurred due to various problems according to working environment, such as, the rolling phenomenon of the boat due to the wave and the fluctuation of the sonic image due to the inoperability of the boat driver. Therefore, in order to solve the image blurring caused by the operation of the equipment for underwater survey of the existing side scan sonar, in this research, the program was supplemented to enable the shake correction by attaching the shake correction sensor and developing the shake correction algorithm. In order to verify the improvement of the sonar data resolution, the sonic images before and after the shake correction were collected through on-site investigation and the analysis of the sonic image data acquired by a diver measuring the actual damage length and depth. This study is expected to contribute to the development of sonar imaging technique of the underwater surface of the structure and bed surface of the sea or a river using the side scan sonar in the future.
Sediment abrasion in rivers is caused by the interaction between bedrock channel bed and sediment particles transported through the river. Abrasion rate of sediment particles in rivers is controlled by two major factors; Sediment transport conditions including hydraulic conditions form the erosive forces and physical and chemical strengths of the particles form a resistance force against abrasion and other erosional processes. Physical experiments were performed to find the role of each variable on sediment abrasion process. Total 266 sediment particles were used in this experiment. All sediment particles were divided into 11 independent sediment groups with sediment particle size and sediment loads. Each sediment groups were abraded in tumbling mill for up to 8 hours. Changes in weight were recorded by run and total: 2,128 cases of abrasion rate were recoded. Physical strength of rock particles was measured with point load strength index. It is found that sediment abrasion rate has a negative functional relationship point load strength index ($I_{a(50)}$) ($R^2=0.22$). It was suggested that physical strength of sediment particles set the "maximum possible abrasion rate'. As sediment flux increases, abrasion rates of sediment particles with similar point load strength index were changed. It could be concluded that not only physical characteristics of sediment particles, but also sediment transport conditions control sediment abrasion rates.
This study was performed to improve water quality of stream by applying hydraulic structures (weir and river bed material) made of porous concrete. The physical and chemical characteristics of porous concrete were measured to estimate application possibility of it in hydraulic structures and it was considered as a proper material for the hydraulic structures. In the results of comparison for the component of matters attached on the hydraulic structures made of porous and ordinary concrete, DW (dry weight) amount attached on porous concrete was 1.6 times higher than that on ordinary concrete under the condition of the same flow rate but influence by flow rate (difference of 10 times) was not shown. Therefore, we could understand that the material of media was more important in DW amount than flow rate. The rate of AFDM (ash free dry mass) to DW also was more at porous concrete than at ordinary concrete. Especially, the high rates of nitrogen and phosphorous in matters attached on porous concrete verify that they were removed by assimilation, adsorption and metabolism of periphyton. The removal percentage of SS, BOD, COD, T-N and T-P by hydraulic structures applying porous concrete compared with ordinary concrete was increased by 34.6%, 36.9%, 33.9%, 18.3% and 21.6%, respectively. Therefore, applying porous concrete to hydraulic structure is expected to contribute to improvement of stream water quality.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the groundwater drawdown and streamflow depletion due to each groundwater pumping from 110 wells located near stream using the Hunt's analytical solution (1999). The calculated results revealed that the streamflow depletion rate divided by the pumping rate for each well location mostly exceeded about 80% of pumping rate on average for 5 years. The results also showed that the stream boundary condition has made the influence distance shorter and the drawdown distribution skewed except for the streambed hydraulic conductivity and the stream bed factor (SBF) lower than $1.0{\times}10^{-9}m/s$ and 1.0, respectively. It was found that the groundwater pumping has significant impacts on the stream depletion showing above 80 % of stream depletion rate when the streambed hydraulic conductivity is higher than $1.0{\times}10^{-7}m/s$ and the stream depletion factor(SDF) is lower than 100. However, for other conditions, the SDF is not sufficient to be used as a criterion for determining whether the pumping has great impacts on stream depletion or not. Furthermore, the variation of the streambed hydraulic conductance has little change in stream depletion rate for the condition that the stream width is greater than 400 m.

The yeongok stream originates at the natural park, Mt. O-dae and flows to the East Sea of korea, normally maintaining I or II grade of water quality and its average water flux is 352,100 ㎥/d. However, the typhoon 'Rusa', which occured on 31 August 2002, changed its watercourse and configuration, and the ecosystem was deeply damaged. Moreover, the hydrological characteristics were once more transformed, and the ecosystem was secondarily damaged during repair-work of destroyed bridges and elevations. After the flood disaster, the species diversity diminished 17% for attached diatom and 44% for aquatic animals. However, the earth and sand, dug from river bed during intensive repair-work throughout the entire stream, made diversity drop to 32% for the diatom and the aquatic animals were wiped out. Especially, fishes were totally destroyed except for some species such as Moroco oxycephalus in the upper stream. The yeongok stream has little contamination source and short water residence time due to the short length and rapid slope, and consequently a temporary deterioration of water quality caused by repair-work may be rapidly recovered, but it needs a long time to restore the damaged ecosystem.
For the construction of 4.8km long Multi-Purpose Jamuna Bridge in Bangladesh, 2 or 3 large diameter open-ended steel pipe piles were used for the foundation of piers. A total of 123 piles were driven for 50 piers and 2 test piles from the river bed through the normally-consolidated upper sand layer and rested n top of gravel layer. Two types of piles, having 3.15 or 2.50m diameter and variable wall thickness in the range of 40 to 60mm, were driven to the depths of 69 to 74m with the rake of 6:1 by connecting 2 or 3 pieces of short piles. Dynamic pile tests were performed on 24 selected piles during pile driving and soil plug length inside the pile was also measured after driving of each short section. These piles were plugged with soil to, though slightly affected by pile diameters, about 75% of total length of pile driven. Active plug at the tip of pile contributed substantial amount of inner skin friction to the total capacity. Piles soon after driving showed a skin-friction dominant pile behaviour, tat is, 90% of total capacity being developed by skin resistance. Quakes values and Smith damping factors were almost constant regardless of pile diameters. This result reflects the influence of uniform soil condition at the site.

This study was conducted for determining the influence of Sediment Control Dam dredging on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in mountain stream of Gyeongsangbuk-do. The sediment control dams were surveyed before and after dredging from mountain streams of Yecheon, Yeongju and Bonghwa in Northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Sampling was taken at upper and down from 3 experimental sites and 2 control sites during May to August 2011. The identified species before dredging were 56 belonged to 31 families, 11 orders, 6 classes and 4 phyla, but after dredging it has decreased to 51 species belonged to 27 families, 10 orders, 5 classes and 4 phyla. The microhabitat damage of benthic macroinvertebrates occurred at experimental sites after dredging of sediment control dams led to reduction of the number of species and individuals. Especially, upper stream of experimental sites showed the reduction of an average of 38% species. In general, species diversity indices and species richness indices decreased after dredging; however, dominance indices increased at experimental sites. In the upper stream of experimental sites, the microhabitat damaged and became pool due to dredging. Also, velocity of flow decreased and the river bed became simply due to the sedimentary matter being finer than sand and silt. As a result, composition of functional feeding groups and functional feeding groups were relatively simpler at upper stream and the degree of community differences was greater between upper and down stream. Also, Chironomidae spp., Ephemeridae spp., and Gomphidae spp. to prefer where slow velocity of flow and lentic increased in a greater rate, and the EPT/C index to indicate the balance of the community decreased.

In this study, to develop an assessment method for spatio-temporal riverbed changes, a 1-dimensional model (HEC-RAS) and a 2-dimensional model (CCHE2D) were built and applied. As for the analysis of a riverbed's long-term change in a real stream, three new assessment methods were developed, which are called the "Sediment section cumulative curve", "Sediment section moment", and "Sediment probability distribution function." These methods were used to assess the characteristics of riverbed changes using a consistent valuation standard and to understand changes in quantities intuitively. From the results of this study, sediment characteristics of cross sections can be detected effectively by applying the "Sediment section cumulative curve" method to determine whether there is any sedimentation or erosion in total emission. The amount of sedimentation or erosion occurring in the right or left banks, which divided by center column, could be presented as one criterion by applying the "Sediment section moment" method. This approach could be utilized as an indicator for sediment predictions. Spatio-temporal sediment variables can be presented quantitatively by determining the mean and uncertain boundaries through the "Sediment probability distribution function", and finally, the results can be illustrated for each cross section to provide intuitive recognition.
